{"id":2257225,"date":"2026-01-30T00:08:35","date_gmt":"2026-01-30T00:08:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2257225"},"modified":"2026-01-30T00:08:35","modified_gmt":"2026-01-30T00:08:35","slug":"ou-athletic-director-committed-to-entertainment-district-news","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/ou-athletic-director-committed-to-entertainment-district-news\/","title":{"rendered":"OU athletic director committed to entertainment district | News"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"article-body\" itemprop=\"articleBody\" false=\"\">\n                                <meta itemprop=\"isAccessibleForFree\" content=\"true\"\/><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The hiring of Roger Denny as OU\u2019s next athletic director may signal the university\u2019s plans to prioritize the advancement of the Rock Creek Entertainment District.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Denny, while working as an attorney in St. Louis, represented the bond issuers for <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stlballparkvillage.com\/\">Ballpark Village<\/a>, a mixed-use district around Busch Stadium, home ballpark of MLB team the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/cardinals\">St. Louis Cardinals<\/a>.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-video  subscriber-hide tnt-inline-asset tnt-inline-relcontent tnt-inline-video tnt-inline-relation-child tnt-inline-presentation-default tnt-inline-alignment-default tnt-inline-width-default\">\n<figure class=\"multimedia-desc-style  multimedia-inline-figcaption\">&#13;<figcaption class=\"caption\"><span class=\"caption-text\"><\/p>\n<p><span>New OU athletic director Roger Denny described his experience with building Ballpark Village in St. Louis as he looks to help establish a University North Park entertainment district in Norman.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><\/span><span class=\"clearfix\"\/>&#13;<br \/>\n                    <\/figcaption>&#13;<br \/>\n                <\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cUltimately, what I saw in that deal\u2026the thing I learned from that, is that you just have to keep plugging away at it and plugging away at it every time it turns, and you think the deal might be falling apart\u2026we\u2019ll stay in the fight longer than anyone,\u201d Denny said in a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/sports\/oklahoma-athletics-sec-roger-denny-law-nil-revenue-sharing\/article_40b5c837-64c5-4c8d-ab67-4392dc15bc40.html\">Wednesday press conference<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Ballpark Village was executed in two phases. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/cardinals\/ballpark\/ballpark-village\/phase-1\">first opened in 2014<\/a> and was a $100 million, 150,000-square-foot facility including bars, restaurants and event venues. The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/news\/2017\/12\/14\/cardinals-break-ground-on-second-phase-of-ballpark.html\">second phase<\/a> of the district was a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mlb.com\/cardinals\/ballpark\/ballpark-village\/phase-2\">$260 million, 700,000-square-foot expansion<\/a> including a luxury apartment building, ten-story office building, retail spaces and numerous restaurants.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Since the conclusion of its second phase in 2020, Ballpark Village has had a complicated success story. In 2025, an additional <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/spectrumlocalnews.com\/mo\/st-louis\/news\/2025\/04\/08\/major-improvements-coming-to-ballpark-village\">$4 million was reinvested<\/a> into the area, bringing two new dining and entertainment concepts, but within the same year, taxable sales around Busch Stadium fell with businesses closing their doors.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Aaron Park, owner of Ballpark Village apparel company <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/archapparel.com\/?srsltid=AfmBOorxCGpbsJV4jP0mGSTOVGP6QAgyoQYkXyZ5fK4jJrC1QTh6p-7P\">Arch Apparel<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bizjournals.com\/stlouis\/news\/2025\/11\/13\/ballpark-village-arch-apparel-bankruptcy-struggle.html\">told the St. Louis Business Journal<\/a> he was closing his store after years of struggle. He attributed declining sales to decreased attendance at Cardinals games and Ballpark Village\u2019s failure to generate foot traffic in the off season.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cMoving to Ballpark Village was the worst decision of my life,\u201d Park told the St. Louis Business Journal.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Daily reached out to Ballpark Village but did not receive a response by the time of publication.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Denny said Ballpark Village was one of the first projects he ever worked on. While the project took almost seven years, Denny said it taught him a lot about managing large scale developments.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">&#8220;It&#8217;s not just on the field; it&#8217;s not how we compete. It&#8217;s in everything we do. You have to stay in it,&#8221; Denny said. &#8220;Big projects like that aren&#8217;t easy, and a lot of them fall apart just because of the fatigue that comes with them. And the real work that goes into it is keeping the folks engaged, so that as that fatigue sets in, no one ever loses sight of all the reasons on the front end we said that (were) so important.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201c&#8230; That&#8217;s what we&#8217;ll look to do (with University North Park).&#8221;<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Over the past few years, OU President Joseph Harroz Jr. has reiterated the university&#8217;s commitment to building <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/news\/rock-creek-entertainment-district-arena-project-milestones\/collection_95c3323e-e492-11ef-91d4-fbab439fdcce.html\">a $1 billion arena and entertainment April 2024 if Norman City Council did not approve the entertainment district, the university, alongside donors, would look to other cities to build an arena for which its basketball and women\u2019s gymnastics teams would be anchor tenants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m very hopeful and do everything I can to keep it here in Norman,\u201d Harroz said. \u201cBut if this isn\u2019t approved by the city council for whatever reason, then we\u2019re going to be looking at other (cities), Oklahoma City, Moore, surrounding areas and figure out where is there a group that wants to do this.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Daily reached out to OU Marketing and Communications Thursday asking if the university expects Denny to be a leading advocate for the Rock Creek The vote took place toward the end of the eight-hour-long meeting after a long public comment period. Residents expressed concerns with the funding model, which included the formation of a new tax increment finance district, or TIF.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Shortly after the council&#8217;s vote, Oklahomans for Responsible Economic Development <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/news\/university-north-park-entertainment-district-rock-creek-oklahomans-for-responsible-economic-development-ou-university-of-oklahoma-petition-norman-residents\/article_3935f83c-8cb6-11ef-b8d8-a79321e3931f.html\">submitted a petition<\/a> to send the entertainment district to a public vote. The petition is now being <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/news\/rock-creek-entertainment-district-university-north-park-oklahoma-supreme-court-appeal-petition-invalid\/article_aabdfbb5-4815-4aca-9ac2-9d2951d7c9fe.html\">seen by the Oklahoma Supreme Court<\/a> after a judge <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/news\/norman-referendum-petition-university-north-park-court-hearing-stephen-tyler-holman-larry-heikkila\/article_20ec18a8-f0a0-11ef-b948-d7fa75a51ab6.html\">ruled the referendum petition insufficient<\/a> in May.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Dan Quinn, former Ward 8 city council member and a real estate agent, was one of four Norman residents who filed a protest against the petition. Other residents who filed the protest include David Nimmo, president and CEO of Chickasaw Nation Industries; Kyle Allison, director of Allison\u2019s FUN Inc.; and Vernon McKown, CEO of Ideal Homes &amp; Neighborhoods.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">In a Thursday email to the Daily, Quinn wrote that he was glad Denny had an interest in the entertainment district.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cI strongly believe in the project,\u201d Quinn wrote.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Despite his faith in the district\u2019s development, Quinn said he was concerned that the state Supreme Court is taking so long to render a decision.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The Daily reached out on Thursday to Rob Norman, Oklahomans for Economic Development\u2019s attorney, for comment. Norman said he would respond as soon as time allows.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The entertainment district\u2019s arena would house OU\u2019s women\u2019s and men\u2019s basketball and women\u2019s gymnastic sporting events. While OU women\u2019s basketball and gymnastics have seen success and fan enthusiasm over the past few years, men\u2019s basketball has consistently underperformed under coach <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/sports\/ou-basketball-sooners-hire-loyola-chicagos-porter-moser-as-next-head-coach\/article_846cc03a-93f7-11eb-8a3a-735732ed545f.html\">Porter Moser<\/a>, who joined OU in 2021. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/sports\/ou-mens-basketball-in-to-march-madness-ninth-seed-sec-tournament\/article_e4f77e26-02b7-11f0-8951-bb16eb06f562.html\">Prior to 2025<\/a>, the team had not qualified for the NCAA tournament for three years, and never under Moser. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.sports-reference.com\/cbb\/schools\/oklahoma\/men\/\">In its over 115 year history<\/a>, men\u2019s basketball has never won an NCAA Division I national championship and has not reached the Final Four in a decade.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">OU announced Friday it would hire Denny as its next athletic director, replacing long-time athletic director Joe Castiglione. Castiglione has served as OU&#8217;s athletic director since 1998 and will step into an emeritus role following the hiring of his successor. The Sooners won <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/soonersports.com\/staff-directory\/joe-castiglione\/77\">26 national championships<\/a> during his tenure.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Denny has served as <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/fightingillini.com\/staff-directory\/roger-denny\/1845\">Illinois\u2019 deputy athletic director and chief operating officer<\/a> since July 2021. Prior to his position at Illinois, Denny worked as an attorney at the St. Louis office of law firm <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spencerfane.com\/\">Spencer Fane LLP<\/a> with an industry focus on sports businesses. Denny advised clients on transactional matters, including mergers and acquisitions, executive compensation and taxation, private equity and corporate finance.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The search for OU\u2019s new athletic director was led by Randall Stephenson, former AT&amp;T CEO and current executive adviser to the president and athletics director, and supported by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oudaily.com\/sports\/oklahoma-sooners-football-sec-the-athlete-group\/article_62f7835e-cee0-41c9-875c-8c06b72d9542.html\">The Athlete Group<\/a> and a 12-member committee of representatives across the university.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Stephenson <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oklahoman.com\/story\/sports\/college\/sooners\/2025\/09\/02\/ou-athletic-director-search-president-joseph-harroz-jr-randall-stephenson-oklahoma-sooners\/85922613007\/\">told The Oklahoman in September<\/a> the university was looking for candidates with talent, business acumen and those with experience in sports media.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cAs we think about the next athletic director, Joe (Harroz), Joe (Castiglione) and I have talked about how we need to begin to think about different talent pools,\u201d Stephenson told The Oklahoman. \u201cWhere we go look for the type of individual that we think can be successful over the next 10 years in this kind of role. And so we&#8217;re going to be looking at some very different talent pools.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-image layout-horizontal  subscriber-hide  tnt-inline-asset
