Former NBC staffer Brooke Nevils<\/strong><\/a> recalled telling her mom about what happened between her and Matt Lauer<\/strong><\/a> before she officially reported her alleged assault.<\/p>\n

\u201cUntil I reported Matt, I probably told about 10 or 12 people sanitized, idealized versions of what happened, never suggesting that it had been anything other than my choice,\u201d Nevils wrote in an excerpt from her upcoming book, Unspeakable Things<\/em>, shared via New York Magazine<\/em>\u2019s The Cut<\/a> on Wednesday, January 28. \u201cOne of those people was my mother. I\u2019d almost convinced myself that she would be proud of me for handling the situation \u2014 and that this powerful man that even she admired had \u2018chosen\u2019 me. Even though I\u2019d framed the situation as positively as I could manage, there was no pride on the other end of the line.\u201d<\/p>\n

Instead, Nevils recalled hearing her mom\u2019s \u201clow, slow, labored breathing, as though she were struggling for air,\u201d before she finally spoke \u201cin a voice I would not have recognized.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cGoddamn him,\u201d her mother said. When Nevils insisted she was \u201chandling\u201d the situation, her mom replied, \u201cYou think you\u2019re being a grown\u2011up, but you\u2019re being a stupid little girl.\u201d<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatt Lauer hosted the Today show for more than two decades before he was fired following allegations of sexual misconduct. \u201cThere are no words to express my sorrow and regret for the pain I have caused others by words and actions,\u201d Lauer told Us Weekly in a 2017 statement. \u201cTo the people I have hurt, [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

According to Nevils, the response was \u201cthe meanest thing she had ever said to me\u201d in her life.<\/p>\n

\u201cOf course, I could have no idea then of the sheer magnitude of the pain I had just caused her,\u201d Nevils continued. \u201cUntil I had a daughter of my own, I could never have imagined the primal rage she must have felt as she gathered that a powerful man nearly her age had preyed upon the body of the daughter who meant everything to her but nothing at all to him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before Nevils hung up the phone, she remembered her mom warning: \u201cYou are nothing to that man but a convenience.\u201d<\/p>\n

Lauer, 68, allegedly raped Nevils in his hotel room in Sochi, Russia, during the 2014 Winter Olympics. Lauer was fired by NBC<\/a> three years later, with NBC News chairman Andrew Lack<\/strong><\/a> noting in a 2017 statement that the company had \u201creason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nevils previously opened up about the assault in Ronan Farrow<\/strong>\u2018s 2019 book, Catch and Kill<\/em>, insisting that she was \u201ctoo drunk to consent.\u201d Lauer shut down the allegations<\/a> in a letter shared via his lawyer, claiming that the pair had an \u201cextramarital, but consensual, sexual encounter.\u201d<\/p>\n

In the excerpt from her own book, Nevils shared even more harrowing details about the Sochi assault, as well as another incident which allegedly took place in a New York City apartment after the Olympics. She claimed there were \u201cfour more instances,\u201d including one where she was allegedly \u201csummoned\u201d to Lauer\u2019s dressing room.<\/p>\n

\n\t\t\tMatt Lauer and his second wife, Annette Roque, were months away from celebrating their 20th wedding anniversary when the TV host was hit by scandal. In November 2017, Lauer\u2019s contract as cohost of NBC\u2019s Today was terminated when he was accused of sexual misconduct. Lauer allegedly harassed a female staffer when they covered the Winter [\u2026]\t\t<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt would take years \u2014 and a national reckoning with sexual harassment and assault \u2014 before I called what happened to me assault,\u201d Nevils wrote, referring to the MeToo movement<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lauer was fired in the fall of 2017, and Nevils \u201cmade it a few more months\u201d at the network \u201cbefore taking a leave of absence that would ultimately prove permanent.\u201d<\/p>\n
