Today<\/em><\/a>\u2018s Ann Curry<\/strong><\/a> is speaking out in support of former NBC producer Brooke Nevils<\/strong><\/a>, who accused Matt Lauer<\/strong><\/a> of rape in 2017.<\/p>\n \u201cI remember Brooke as good-hearted and credible, with great potential,\u201d Curry, 69, told People<\/em><\/a> in a statement on Thursday, January 29. \u201cShe is also brave.\u201d<\/p>\n Nevils previously alleged that she was anally raped<\/a> by Lauer, 68, in Sochi, Russia, while covering the 2014 Winter Olympics. He was fired by NBC three years later following a complaint about \u201cinappropriate sexual behavior in the workplace.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWhile it is the first complaint about his behavior in the over 20 years he\u2019s been at NBC News, we were also presented with reason to believe this may not have been an isolated incident,\u201d read a letter from NBC News chairman Andrew Lack<\/strong> in 2017. \u201cOur highest priority is to create a workplace environment where everyone feels safe and protected and to ensure that any actions that run counter to our core values are met with consequences, no matter who the offender. We are deeply saddened by this turn of events.\u201d<\/p>\n In an excerpt from her upcoming book, Unspeakable Things<\/em>, available February 3, Nevils shared more details from the alleged Sochi incident, as well as a separate encounter with Lauer that allegedly occurred at a New York City apartment after the Olympics. She claimed there were \u201cfour more instances\u201d between them over the next few months.<\/p>\n \u201cIt would take years \u2014 and a national reckoning with sexual harassment and assault \u2014 before I called what happened to me assault,\u201d Nevils wrote.<\/p>\n In 2019, Lauer vehemently denied Nevils\u2019 rape allegations, claiming in a letter shared via his lawyer<\/a> that the former colleagues had an \u201cextramarital, but consensual, sexual encounter.\u201d (Nevils alleged in Ronan Farrow<\/strong>\u2018s book Catch and Kill<\/em> that she was \u201ctoo drunk to consent\u201d and told Lauer \u201cmultiple times\u201d that she didn\u2019t want to have anal sex.)<\/p>\n Curry, for her part, hosted the Today<\/em> show alongside Lauer from 2010 to 2011. She left NBC News in 2015 after nearly 25 years at the network.<\/p>\n As NBC cut ties with Lauer in 2017, Curry told The Washington Post<\/em> that she reported him on behalf of a colleague<\/a> in 2012. A female staffer allegedly confided in Curry that she was being \u201csexually harassed physically\u201d by Lauer.<\/p>\n \u201cShe was afraid of losing her job \u2026 I believed her,\u201d Curry recalled. \u201cI told management they had a problem and they needed to keep an eye on him and how he deals with women.\u201d<\/p>\n At the time, an NBC spokesperson told the Post<\/em> that they didn\u2019t have a record of Curry\u2019s complaint, which was not noted in Lauer\u2019s personnel file.<\/p>\n
