Fresh court documents released in the United States suggest that
\nAndrew Mountbatten-Windsor attended an intimate gathering with
\nJeffrey Epstein in New York months after the disgraced financier
\nhad been released from prison for sex offences.<\/p>\n
The material forms part of a newly published tranche of files
\nissued by the US Department of Justice on Friday, adding further
\ndetail to the former prince\u2019s continued association with Epstein
\nfollowing his 2009 conviction.<\/p>\n
Among the documents are emails sent by the Hollywood publicist
\nPeggy Siegal, who appears to have organised what she described as a
\n\u201clast-minute casual dinner\u201d in December 2010 while
\nMountbatten-Windsor was visiting New York on what was characterised
\nas an unofficial private trip.<\/p>\n
The correspondence indicates that the dinner was arranged at
\nEpstein\u2019s Manhattan townhouse, where Mountbatten-Windsor was
\nstaying during the visit. At the time, he later claimed, the
\npurpose of the trip was to formally end his relationship with the
\nfinancier.<\/p>\n
The visit nonetheless drew intense scrutiny after photographs
\nemerged of the pair walking together in Central Park, undermining
\nclaims that the relationship had been severed.<\/p>\n
In his widely criticised BBC Newsnight interview in 2019,
\nMountbatten-Windsor said he had chosen to confront Epstein in
\nperson rather than by telephone, remarking that ending the
\nfriendship remotely would have been \u201cthe chicken\u2019s way of doing
\nit\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, the newly released emails suggest that social
\nengagements continued during the trip. Siegal circulated a proposed
\nguest list for what she described as a \u201cvery interesting, fast, fun
\ndinner\u201d, inviting a number of prominent figures from politics,
\njournalism and entertainment.<\/p>\n
Those contacted included the film director Woody Allen and his
\nwife Soon-Yi Previn; the political strategist George Stephanopoulos
\nand his wife, the actor Alexandra Wentworth; the broadcaster Katie
\nCouric; and the television presenter Charlie Rose. It remains
\nunclear who ultimately attended, though the correspondence
\nindicates that Wentworth withdrew because her children were
\nill.<\/p>\n
In one message, Siegal wrote to Stephanopoulos: \u201cCome on time
\nand you will have private time with Andrew as he is staying at the
\nhouse.\u201d<\/p>\n
Epstein was arrested again in 2019 on federal charges of sex
\ntrafficking but died by suicide in prison before standing
\ntrial.<\/p>\n
Mountbatten-Windsor has since withdrawn from public royal duties
\nand no longer uses his HRH style, following sustained controversy
\nover his links to Epstein. In 2022, he reached a reported \u00a312
\nmillion settlement with Virginia Giuffre, who alleged that she was
\ntrafficked to him by Epstein when she was 17. He has consistently
\ndenied the allegations and made the payment without admitting
\nliability.<\/p>\n
Ms Giuffre died last year.<\/p>\n
The document release also includes emails sent by Ghislaine
\nMaxwell, Epstein\u2019s longtime associate, to an account believed by
\ninvestigators to have belonged to Mountbatten-Windsor.<\/p>\n
In one message dated March 2002, Maxwell offered condolences
\nfollowing the death of the Queen Mother, writing: \u201cSweet pea \u2014
\nsorry you had to rush home, and also under such sad
\ncircumstances.\u201d<\/p>\n
She added: \u201cShe was wonderful, and I am happy that I managed to
\nmeet her and speak with her. We shall reschedule. Love you.
\nGx.\u201d<\/p>\n
A reply sent the following day from the same address \u2013 signed
\n\u201cThe Invisible Man\u201d \u2013 read: \u201cGot your message this morning. Sorry
\nto have missed you yesterday. I will ring later today to chat. A
\nxxx.\u201d<\/p>\n
Other emails attributed to the account include light-hearted
\nexchanges, including one in which the sender jokingly referred to
\nan acquaintance as \u201csuper sperm\u201d in reference to having more
\nchildren.<\/p>\n
Maxwell is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence in the
\nUnited States after being convicted in 2022 of child sex
\ntrafficking offences connected to Epstein.<\/p>\n
The latest disclosures reinforce the extent of the relationship
\nbetween Epstein, Maxwell and Mountbatten-Windsor, who is alleged to
\nhave maintained contact with the financier even after his earlier
\nconviction and prison sentence in 2008.<\/p>\n
Buckingham Palace has previously confirmed that Andrew\u2019s royal
\ntitles were removed amid the continuing fallout from his
\nassociation with Epstein \u2013 a relationship that remains the most
\ndamaging scandal to engulf the modern monarchy.<\/p>\n
