Click here to subscribe<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n I almost couldn\u2019t believe my eyes on Wednesday when Nicki Minaj declared her undying support for President Donald Trump at his <\/span>Accounts Summit<\/span><\/a> in Washington, D.C. \u2014 emphasis on <\/span>almost<\/span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n After Trump introduced Minaj as \u201cthe most successful female rapper in history\u201d who also \u201cmakes a lot of cash,\u201d she strolled onstage to praise the president and his rollout of Trump Accounts, described as tax-advantaged investment accounts for newly U.S.-born babies.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Seemingly unbothered by backlash, the \u201cTrollz\u201d rapper made it clear she stands firmly by her controversial allegiance, as she told the crowd, \u201cThe hate, or what people have to say, it does not affect me at all. It actually motivates me to support him more. And it\u2019s going to motivate all of us to support him more.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe\u2019re not going to let them get away with bullying him,\u201d Minaj added, aiming at Trump\u2019s critics while noting he has God and \u201ca lot of force behind him.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Perhaps that so-called force is why Minaj has gotten so comfortable cozying up to Trump and his administration lately. Since Wednesday, theories have run rampant online, as fans and critics alike struggle to understand how Minaj \u2014 a former LGBTQ+ ally who immigrated to the U.S. as a child and once condemned Trump\u2019s zero-tolerance immigration policy \u2014 has rebranded herself as one of his loudest supporters.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Some speculate that the rapper has aligned herself with Trump in hopes of seeking pardons for her husband and brother, both convicted of sex crimes. Others point to her <\/span>immigration status<\/span><\/a> after she <\/span>posted a photo<\/span><\/a> of Trump\u2019s \u201c<\/span>Gold Card<\/span><\/a>,\u201d which provides fast-tracked U.S. citizenship, according to <\/span>Forbes.<\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Minaj addressed the speculation <\/span>on X<\/span><\/a>, mocking critics by writing, \u201cResidency? Residency? The cope is coping. Finalizing that citizenship paperwork as we speak as per MY wonderful, gracious, charming President.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThanks to the petition,\u201d she continued alongside an image of horror character Chucky holding up a middle finger, adding, \u201cGold Trump card free of charge.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n As <\/span>outlined by Trump<\/span><\/a>, the Gold Card facilitates \u201cthe entry of aliens who have demonstrated their ability and desire to advance the interests of the United States by voluntarily providing a significant financial gift to the Nation.\u201d Sure, this could just be a coincidence, but the president said Minaj <\/span>is<\/span> investing hundreds of thousands of dollars in his accounts (between $150,000 and $300,000, according to <\/span>CNBC<\/span><\/a>), so there could be some truth to folks\u2019 speculation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Whatever her motivation, Minaj has made her allegiance to Trump unmistakable. The truth of the matter is, the rapper\u2019s crossover into MAGA land was inevitable if you\u2019ve paid attention to any of her recent moves with the far-right.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n The rapper\u2019s public descent seemed to officially begin in November after she <\/span>personally thanked Trump<\/span><\/a> for speaking out about the persecution of Christians in Nigeria. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cWe live in a country where we can freely worship God,\u201d she wrote in an <\/span>X post<\/span><\/a>. \u201cNo group should ever be persecuted for practicing their religion \u2026 Numerous countries all around the world are being affected by this horror & it\u2019s dangerous to pretend we don\u2019t notice.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n She added: \u201cThank you to The President & his team for taking this seriously. God bless every persecuted Christian.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Later that month, Minaj faced heavy backlash for <\/span>speaking at a United Nations event<\/span><\/a> \u2014 an appearance <\/span>reportedly arranged by Trump\u2019s adviser<\/span><\/a>, Alex Bruesewitz \u2014 to warn of what she called \u201cextremism\u201d against Christians in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cI would like to thank President Trump for prioritizing this issue and for his leadership on the global stage in calling for urgent action to defend Christians in Nigeria, to combat extremism and to bring a stop to violence against those who simply want to exercise their natural right to freedom of religion or belief,\u201d she claimed in her remarks.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n She continued, alleging, \u201cToday, faith is under attack in way too many places. In Nigeria, Christians are being targeted, driven from their homes and killed. Churches have been burned, families have been torn apart, and entire communities live in fear constantly simply because of how they pray.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Around the same time, Minaj also reposted an <\/span>official White House TikTok video<\/span><\/a> \u2014 set to one of her songs \u2014 bragging about Trump\u2019s first-year \u201cachievements,\u201d which noted \u201cno men in women\u2019s sports,\u201d \u201cborder is closed\u201d and \u201ccriminal illegals are being deported.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n All of this culminated in Minaj\u2019s surprise appearance at Turning Point USA\u2019s AmericaFest in December, where she sat beside CEO Erika Kirk and echoed right-wing, anti-trans rhetoric such as, \u201cBoys, be boys.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThere\u2019s nothing wrong with being a boy,\u201d Minaj said. \u201cHow about that? How powerful is that? How profound is that?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Following her conservative coming-out, Minaj <\/span>shut down her Instagram account<\/span><\/a>, though she remains active on X, where she\u2019s shared numerous photos and videos from her appearance at the Accounts Summit.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n All of these antics are only recent signs of Minaj\u2019s conservative transformation, but the shift itself goes back much further, by at least a decade. In a 2015 interview with <\/span>Billboard<\/span><\/a>, the rapper didn\u2019t offer much critique of Trump when asked if she had an opinion about his presidential campaign. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cThere are points he has made that may not have been so horrible if his approach wasn\u2019t so childish,\u201d Minaj said plainly. \u201cBut in terms of entertainment \u2014 I think he\u2019s hilarious. I wish they could just film him running for president. That\u2019s the ultimate reality show.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Although she\u2019d soon grow to be a Trump critic, repeatedly <\/span>slamming his immigration views<\/span><\/a>, even once on her remix of Rae Sremmurd\u2019s \u201cBlack Beatles\u201d \u2014 \u201cIsland girl, Donald Trump want me go home\u201d \u2014 Minaj\u2019s political stance seemingly changed during the pandemic after she spouted unfounded claims about COVID-19 vaccines on social media.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cMy cousin in Trinidad won\u2019t get the vaccine cuz his friend got it & became impotent. His testicles became swollen,\u201d she claimed in an X post<\/a>, which several experts <\/span>debunked<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n In 2023, Minaj doubled down on her vaccine skepticism \u2014 which she shares with Trump and <\/span>fellow right-wingers<\/span><\/a> \u2014 in an interview with <\/span>Vogue<\/span><\/a>, where she also briefly spoke on politics, though was careful not to attach herself to any particular party.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n \u201cEvery time I talk about politics, people get mad,\u201d the rapper said. \u201cI\u2019m sorry, but I am not going to be told who I should get on social media and campaign for. There\u2019s a lot we don\u2019t know that\u2019s going on in the government, and I don\u2019t think it changes whether you lean to the left or right.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n These days, however, Minaj has leaned decisively to the right. It\u2019s not entirely surprising, given how her erratic online behavior echoes Trump\u2019s own digital theatrics and authoritarian mindset \u2014 where any criticism is treated as a personal attack, keeping her in a constant state of defensiveness. In the process, Minaj has alienated much of the queer fanbase that once fiercely supported her, particularly through her use of homophobic language during public spats.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n Just this month, Minaj <\/span>got into it with former celebrity.land anchor Don Lemon<\/span><\/a> on social media after the latter covered an anti-ICE protest at a Minnesota church (Lemon was arrested<\/a> on Friday in connection with his coverage of the protest). The rapper hurled a <\/span>homophobic slur<\/span><\/a> at the independent journalist before later defending it in an <\/span>X post<\/span><\/a> that reads: \u201cLOL!!! And I purposely wrote it that way b\/c I knew that would be the only way to get the c\u2013k suckas to post about it. They would\u2019ve all collectively ignored the despicable behavior displayed by Lemon head.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n There\u2019s no excusing Minaj\u2019s MAGA embrace after how publicly \u2014 and proudly \u2014 she has positioned herself beside Trump. She\u2019s become a willing mouthpiece for the right\u2019s ideology and shows no signs of slowing down. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n It\u2019s disheartening to see the once-revered hip-hop icon squander the reputation she built opening doors for women in rap. Today, Minaj is less defined by her music and more by paranoia, internet beefs and, now, controversial political alliances.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Even if Minaj has the gall to back-pedal on her current stance years from now and take out a full-page Wall Street Journal ad to <\/span>issue an apology like her old collaborator Kanye West<\/span><\/a>, it wouldn\u2019t be nearly enough to undo all the damage she\u2019s caused to her reputation.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n Like she told the crowd on Wednesday, \u201cI am probably the president\u2019s No. 1 fan, and that\u2019s not going to change.\u201d Sadly, neither will the consensus around her eroding legacy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n
