\u201cA Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,\u201d the latest \u201cGame of Thrones\u201d series, doesn\u2019t depend on swooping dragons or conniving royals to tell its story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cWe have one guy and some horses and a few nice trees,\u201d says creator Ira Parker. \u201cIt was very important for us to feel earthy \u2026 and to feel intimate came very easily because we are just following one person\u2019s story and we\u2019re seeing it through his eyes.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

That one person is Ser Duncan the Tall, a low born \u201chedge\u201d knight who longs to claim his place in a world of Targaryens. After burying his mentor, Dunk enters a tournament and, along the way, comes upon a boy, Egg, who wants to be his squire. Quickly, they become friends and the journey begins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cDunk is such an immediately likable human being,\u201d Parker says. \u201cHe\u2019s earnest and honest and he has a lot of self-doubt and anxieties. He\u2019s just a kid with a silly dream who wants to go out and be a knight, but he doesn\u2019t quite know how to achieve that.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cI really admire his moral compass and his black-and-white sense of chivalry,\u201d he says. \u201cBut I\u2019ve learned a lot from the character and, in a world as ruthless as Westeros, it\u2019s quite a beautiful and endearing thing to see a character like Dunk, who\u2019s trying to navigate it in a moral way.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe were lucky to have about two months preparation before we got into shooting,\u201d Claffey says. \u201cWe did horse riding every day and combat training. I\u2019m so glad to be his friend now, and I\u2019m very, very close with him and his family, and they\u2019re really, really good, lovely people. Those two months could have been quite nerve-racking. But something clicked in that chemistry read, and we haven\u2019t looked back since.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ansell, who\u2019s the only child in the series, says it wasn\u2019t difficult to feel accepted by the adult actors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019ve only been (acting) for two years, but that\u2019s like, what, a fifth of my life? But it feels like I\u2019ve been with these guys for my whole life. I\u2019m so close to them all, and we just feel like buddies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

As secrets are revealed, Dunk\u2019s journey becomes one viewers can relate to.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Bertie Carvel, who plays Prince Baelor Targaryen, heir to the Iron Throne, says, \u201cIt\u2019s very relatable in our own world. We\u2019re all asking ourselves whether you can find the moral courage to do the right thing, whether it feels like a wasted effort.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s good television, it\u2019s good storytelling, and I think a story that we have a real thirst for right now, in a sort of darkening world.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cWe don\u2019t have that roving epic scale of going from family to family and the dead coming to kill mankind and dragons,\u201d Parker says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Claffey\u2019s body language and sense of humor contribute to the overall feeling. Without that, \u201cwe never would have been able to get out Dunk\u2019s inner monologue, which is so important to this series,\u201d Parker says.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

When Carvell read the story, then watched it on screen, he realized viewers are reminded of Dunk\u2019s humanity, mortality and limitations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cHe looks around and sees knights who seem more capable and grander \u2026 and that\u2019s why it\u2019s relatable,\u201d Carvel says. \u201cIt\u2019s a heroic story because it\u2019s sort of grounded in something quite humane and mortal. It would be good if we would all ask ourselves the question, \u2018What would it mean to be more heroic?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
