Tributes have poured in for beloved Canadian actress Catherine O\u2019Hara, the Home Alone and Schitt\u2019s Creek star who died this week at age 71.<\/p>\n

US media outlets reported on Friday that O\u2019Hara died at her Los Angeles home after a brief illness.<\/p>\n

Born and raised in Toronto, O\u2019Hara began her acting career in the 1970s at The Second City improvisational theatre and later performed on iconic Canadian comedy show SCTV.<\/p>\n

Her break into movies came in 1980 with Double Negative, alongside her longtime collaborator Eugene Levy, as well as John Candy.<\/p>\n

But she became widely known to a global audience when she played Macaulay Culkin\u2019s mother in 1990\u2019s Home Alone.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s a perfect movie, isn\u2019t it?\u201d she told People magazine in 2024. \u201cYou want to be part of something good, and that\u2019s how you go.\u201d<\/p>\n

More recently, younger audiences embraced O\u2019Hara for her role as the matriarch of a rich family that loses its wealth in Schitt\u2019s Creek<\/a>, where she again starred alongside Levy, as well as his son, Dan.<\/p>\n

Her turn as Moira Rose won her an Emmy award for best actress in a comedy series in 2020.<\/p>\n

Macaulay Culkin<\/h2>\n

\u201cMama. I thought we had time. I wanted more. I wanted to sit in a chair next to you. I heard you. But I had so much more to say. I love you. I\u2019ll see you later,\u201d Culkin wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

Eugene Levy<\/h2>\n

Levy got his start alongside O\u2019Hara at Second City and on SCTV, and he later starred with her in several projects, including Christopher Guest\u2019s Best in Show, A Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman.<\/p>\n

In a statement, Levy said \u201cwords seem inadequate to express the loss\u201d he felt after her death. \u201cI had the honor of knowing and working with the great Catherine O\u2019Hara for over fifty years,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cFrom our beginnings on the Second City stage, to SCTV, to the movies we did with Chris Guest, to our six glorious years on Schitt\u2019s Creek, I cherished our working relationship, but most of all our friendship. And I will miss her.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy heart goes out to Bo, Matthew, Luke, and the entire O\u2019Hara family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Dan Levy<\/h2>\n

\u201cWhat a gift to have gotten to dance in the warm glow of Catherine O\u2019Hara\u2019s brilliance for all those years,\u201d Levy, who played O\u2019Hara\u2019s character\u2019s son David Rose on Schitt\u2019s Creek, wrote on Instagram.<\/p>\n

\u201cHaving spent over fifty years collaborating with my Dad, Catherine was extended family before she ever played my family. It\u2019s hard to imagine a world without her in it. I will cherish every funny memory I was fortunate enough to make with her.\u201d<\/p>\n

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney<\/h2>\n

\u201cOver 5 decades of work, Catherine earned her place in the canon of Canadian comedy \u2014 from SCTV to Schitt\u2019s Creek,\u201d Carney wrote on X.<\/p>\n

\u201cCanada has lost a legend. My thoughts are with her family, friends, and all those who loved her work on screen. She will be dearly missed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau<\/h2>\n

Trudeau hailed O\u2019Hara as \u201ca beloved Canadian icon with a rare gift for comedy and heart\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe made people laugh across generations and helped bring Canadian storytelling to the world in a way only she could. My thoughts are with her family, friends, and everyone who found joy in her work,\u201d Trudeau wrote on X.<\/p>\n

Seth Rogen<\/h2>\n

Rogen, who starred alongside O\u2019Hara in the series The Studio, said he told O\u2019Hara when he first met her that he thought \u201cshe was the funniest person [he\u2019d] ever had the pleasure of watching on screen\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cHome Alone was the movie that made me want to make movies. Getting to work with her was a true honour,\u201d Rogen wrote in an Instagram post.<\/p>\n

\u201cShe was hysterical, kind, intuitive, generous \u2026 she made me want to make our show good enough to be worthy of her presence in it. This is just devastating. We\u2019re all lucky we got to live in a world with her in it.\u201d<\/p>\n
