Bill Maher<\/a> just issued a blunt takedown of celebrities making political statements at awards shows.<\/p>\n During the Friday, Jan. 30 episode of Real Time With Bill Maher<\/a><\/em>, the late-night host sent a direct message to stars who make political statements on and off the red carpet. He laid into A-listers during the \u201cNew Rule<\/a>\u201d segment of his show.<\/p>\n \u201cAs we\u2019re now right in the middle of awards season here in Hollywood, how about everybody drop the politics for a couple of hours and just enjoy these happy, dopey celebrations of show business?\u201d Maher, 70, suggested.\u201d<\/p>\n After mentioning that he lost a Golden Globe<\/a> earlier in the month, Maher brought up a red carpet interviewer asking him why he wasn\u2019t wearing a label pin in support of Minneapolis ICE victim, Renee Good<\/a>.<\/p>\n His response was, \u201cIt was a terrible thing that happened, and it shouldn\u2019t have happened. And if they didn\u2019t act like such thugs, it wouldn\u2019t have had to happen. But I don\u2019t need to wear a pin about it.\u201d<\/p>\n That\u2019s when Maher doubled down on his message, telling the Real Time<\/em> audience, \u201cI had no idea this question was coming. And so tonight, I\u2019d like to say if I had the chance to think about it, my answer would be exactly the same. Yes, the same: ICE \u2014 thugs, pigs, stupid. I\u2019m with me on this one.\u201d<\/p>\n He continued, \u201cI hope I didn\u2019t spoil the perfect record of pins and ribbons solving all the world\u2019s problems. I mean, you can\u2019t name a problem \u2014 from guns, to AIDS, to bullying, to breast cancer \u2014 that still exists after people wore a ribbon for it. Except all of them, you f\u2014ing posers.\u201d<\/p>\n Maher blasted celebrities for their \u201cvirtue signaling body ornaments\u201d at awards shows, pointing out, \u201cThey\u2019re just crucifixes for liberals. Because every time I see one, I think, \u2018Jesus Christ.\u2019 But, you know, congratulations for raising awareness \u2014 the awareness you really care about, which is how wonderful you are.\u201d<\/p>\n After bringing up Ricky Gervais\u2019<\/a> urging celebrities not to get political<\/a> during their acceptance speeches at the 2020 Golden Globes, Maher pointed out, \u201cAnd of course, this is where celebrities say, \u2018How dare you. We\u2019re citizens with just as much right to speak out.\u2019 Agreed. You absolutely do. I\u2019m just saying, don\u2019t.\u201d<\/p>\n He then declared, \u201cIt\u2019s having the opposite effect of what you want. Every big name in show business came out for Kamala Harris<\/a> \u2014 from Oprah to [George] Clooney<\/a>, to Beyonc\u00e9<\/a> \u2014 and she lost every swing state.\u201d Maher also cited a survey claiming that Taylor Swift<\/a>\u2018s endorsement of Harris had a negative impact on voters\u2019 level of enthusiasm<\/a> about Harris as a candidate.<\/p>\n Maher boldly proclaimed, \u201cRead the room, Democrats. Celebrities aren\u2019t helping.\u201d<\/p>\n However, he acknowledged, \u201cI know the celebrities mean well, and we thank them for having their heart in the right place. But just do you. Do what you do so well. Use your extraordinary talents for the noble cause of bringing relief from the problems that ribbons and pins can\u2019t fix.\u201d<\/p>\n To conclude his thoughts, Maher quipped, \u201cI know it\u2019s very important to you that you feel that you\u2019re making a difference. So let me assure you, you are: You\u2019re making Independents vote Republican.\u201d<\/p>\n
