Judd Apatow and Neil Berkeley have each found success making documentaries about the pantheon of comedy legends, from Gilbert Gottfried to Mel Brooks<\/a>. Now, they\u2019ve teamed up to document another great performer<\/a> in \u201cParalyzed by Hope: The Maria Bamford Story,\u201d which premiered at the 2026 Sundance Film Festival.<\/p>\n Apatow and Berkeley were joined by Bamford herself in the IndieWire Studio, presented by Dropbox, to discuss the process of assembling a film about her multifaceted career.<\/p>\n More from IndieWire<\/strong><\/p>\n \u201cHer act has always been so fascinating,\u201d Apatow said of Bamford. \u201cShe tells so many incredible stories about things she\u2019s gone through in her life which are really inventive and hilarious, but also give people a lot of hope. I just always thought, \u2018I think all this should be in one place, to get the whole story.\u2019 Throughout her career she has all these specials and she tells a piece of it as she\u2019s going through it. That was the first idea, what if you could hear the whole story through her stand-up in a documentary.\u201d<\/p>\n Berkeley explained that, when you\u2019re working with an artist that\u2019s as prolific as Bamford, one of the biggest challenges is finding a way to tell a side of her story that she hasn\u2019t already told herself.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was just trying to figure out what the story was. Maria has told her story so many times in so many different ways, it\u2019s like \u2018How are we bringing something new to that?\u2019 That was always a big challenge,\u201d Berkeley said. \u201cI\u2019d go shoot some stuff, I\u2019d show it to Judd, we\u2019d go through the archive and just piece the story together as we went.\u201d<\/p>\n At the beginning of the film, Bamford isn\u2019t sure if she wants to participate in the documentary at all.
