Home Alone <\/i>director Chris Columbus<\/strong><\/a> is remembering the late Catherine O\u2019Hara<\/strong><\/a>\u2019s legacy after her shocking death.<\/p>\n

\u201cToday, we lost Catherine O\u2019Hara. I\u2019m stunned and heartbroken, along with the rest of the world,\u201d Columbus, 67, wrote via Instagram<\/a> on Friday, January 30. \u201cI was an obsessive fan of Catherine\u2019s brilliant comedic work on SCTV<\/i> and was thrilled when she agreed to play Kevin\u2019s Mom in Home Alone<\/i>.\u201d<\/p>\n

He continued, \u201cWhat most people don\u2019t realize is that Catherine carries the weight of 50% of that film. The movie simply would not work without her extraordinary performance. Catherine grounds the picture with a profound emotional depth. I will miss her greatly.\u201d<\/p>\n

Us Weekly <\/i>confirmed earlier on Friday that O\u2019Hara died at age 71<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cProlific multi-award-winning actress, writer and comedian Catherine O\u2019Hara died today at her home in Los Angeles following a brief illness,\u201d O\u2019Hara\u2019s agency, Creative Artists Agency, wrote in a statement to Us<\/i>. \u201cA private celebration of life will be held by the family.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Hara famously starred as the mom of Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin<\/strong>) in 1990\u2019s Home Alone <\/i><\/a>and its 1992 sequel, Home Alone 2: Lost in New York<\/i>. In the years since wrapping the Home Alone <\/i>movies, O\u2019Hara kept in touch with Culkin, 45.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe\u2019s just a lovely young man,\u201d O\u2019Hara exclusively told Us Weekly <\/i><\/a>in January 2025 of her movie son. \u201cI just care about him. I care for him. I care about him. I\u2019m so happy that he\u2019s doing so well. \u2026 He\u2019s got a lovely family, his own little family that he\u2019s starting [with partner Brenda Song<\/strong>]. He is a sweet young man.\u201d<\/p>\n

She continued, \u201cHe\u2019s still got the same face up close. It\u2019s like, \u2018Oh, my God. I\u2019m still looking at that little 8-year-old.\u2019 He is funny. Always was. I just love [him]. I\u2019m just really happy for him.\u201d<\/p>\n

O\u2019Hara even supported Culkin when he received a star<\/a> on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 2023.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis beautiful 10-year-old little boy was called a superstar, a moneymaker, one of the hottest leading young men in Hollywood,\u201d she said in her speech at the time. \u201cHow does anyone survive that? I believe you\u2019d have to possess a certain quality, a gift that dear John Hughes obviously recognized in Macaulay.\u201d<\/p>\n

After O\u2019Hara\u2019s death, Culkin offered an emotional tribute<\/a> via social media.<\/p>\n
