The Prime Minister has made a rare intervention into royal
\nmatters as he spoke about Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s
\nresponsibilities to the victims of Jeffrey Epstein.<\/p>\n
As new files on Epstein were released by the US State
\nDepartment, the links between the former prince and the convicted
\nsex offender became even clearer.<\/p>\n
The documents include photos of Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor
\nkneeling above a woman who is lying on the ground. There are also
\nemails including one in which Andrew invites Epstein to Buckingham
\nPalace.<\/p>\n
Speaking to reporters on his way to Japan, Sir Keir Starmer said
\n\u201dEpstein\u2019s victims have to be the first priority.\u201d<\/p>\n
He continued \u201din terms of testifying, I have always said anybody
\nwho has got information should be prepared to share that
\ninformation in whatever form they are asked to do that. You can\u2019t
\nbe victim-centred if you\u2019re not prepared to do that.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Prime Minister also said \u201das for whether there should be an
\napology, that\u2019s a matter for Andrew.\u201d<\/p>\n
It is rare for the PM to speak directly about matters involving
\nthe Royal Family. However, Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor is now a
\nprivate citizen, although he remains eighth in line to the throne
\nand is still a Counsellor of State, able to act on behalf of the
\nMonarch in some limited circumstances.<\/p>\n
Last autumn, The King stripped him of his HRH and Prince title
\nby issuing Letters Patent and removed his titles of Duke of York,
\nEarl of Inverness and Baron Killyleagh by asking the Lord
\nChancellor to remove them from the Roll of Peerage.<\/p>\n
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has always denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
The latest papers show he attended an intimate gathering with
\nJeffrey Epstein in New York months after the disgraced financier
\nhad been released from prison for sex offences.<\/p>\n
The material forms part of a newly published tranche of files
\nissued by the US Department of Justice on Friday, adding further
\ndetail to the former prince\u2019s continued association with Epstein
\nfollowing his 2009 conviction.<\/p>\n
Among the documents are emails sent by the Hollywood publicist
\nPeggy Siegal, who appears to have organised what she described as a
\n\u201clast-minute casual dinner\u201d in December 2010 while
\nMountbatten-Windsor was visiting New York on what was characterised
\nas an unofficial private trip.<\/p>\n
The correspondence indicates that the dinner was arranged at
\nEpstein\u2019s Manhattan townhouse, where Mountbatten-Windsor was
\nstaying during the visit. At the time, he later claimed, the
\npurpose of the trip was to formally end his relationship with the
\nfinancier.<\/p>\n
The visit nonetheless drew intense scrutiny after photographs
\nemerged of the pair walking together in Central Park, undermining
\nclaims that the relationship had been severed.<\/p>\n
In his widely criticised BBC Newsnight interview in 2019,
\nMountbatten-Windsor said he had chosen to confront Epstein in
\nperson rather than by telephone, remarking that ending the
\nfriendship remotely would have been \u201cthe chicken\u2019s way of doing
\nit\u201d.<\/p>\n
However, the newly released emails suggest that social
\nengagements continued during the trip.<\/p>\n
Epstein was arrested again in 2019 on federal charges of sex
\ntrafficking but died by suicide in prison before standing
\ntrial.<\/p>\n
