That was the game in which Steve Gleason earned his statue outside the Dome by blocking an Atlanta Falcons punt.<\/p>\n<p>Nearly 20 years later, with Gleason watching from his wheelchair, Harry Connick Jr. and the thousand musicians of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rockin1000.com\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\">Rockin\u20191000<\/a> opened their Dome concert with a mass \u201cThe Saints Are Coming.\u201d Rockin\u20191000 thereby saluted the city and stadium that hosted the global collective\u2019s first-ever American performance.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"2\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>A decade ago, Italian marine geologist Fabio Zaffagnini gathered a thousand amateur musicians to perform the Foo Fighters\u2019 \u201cLearn To Fly\u201d in the hopes of persuading the band to perform in his tiny hometown. Zaffagnini partnered with New Orleans &amp; Company, the city\u2019s tourism marketing firm, to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nola.com\/entertainment_life\/music\/1000-musicians-to-play-together-at-nola-superdome-concert\/article_b0c775ee-be3f-4100-9788-41ccbf32b8f3.html\" target=\"_blank\">finally bring Rockin&#8217;1000 to the United States<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"3\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>They likely hoped to sell more tickets. Cold weather, the Krewe du Vieux parade and unfamiliarity with the Rockin\u20191000 concept likely hurt sales. Only the Dome\u2019s plaza and loge levels along the sidelines were open Saturday, and they were intermittently populated.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Let&#039;s Talk with Keith Spera 401: Rockin 1000\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/8NZQ-UDXQk4?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>But footage from the event will play well on social media. And those in attendance enjoyed a \u201cbig\u201d show in every sense.<\/p>\n<h3>Locals get it started<\/h3>\n<p>New Orleans&#8217; own Cowboy Mouth kicked off the concert with a high-impact, 20-minute set atop a tiered stage at the center of the floor. Drummer\/singer Fred LeBlanc\u2019s outsized enthusiasm was as big as the room. The four local bands took turns on \u201cHey Pocky Way\u201d as Connick hustled by foot and golf cart to sit in with each on keyboards.<\/p>\n<p>Back at center stage, Connick saluted Gleason, \u201ca real, live superhero\u201d who \u201cmade the play of the century right here in this building \u2026 He is the ultimate New Orleans Saint.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen the Saints Go Marching In\u201d accompanied the entrance of the army of Rockin\u20191000 musicians. The Joyful Gospel Singers, Mardi Gras Indians, the St. Augustine High School Marching 100\u2019s drum section and students from the Roots of Music and the Ellis Marsalis Center for Music escorted the musicians in groups of 250.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"5\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The mostly amateur musicians and singers of varying ages and skill levels were amped up to perform in a stadium. They were arranged by instrument in blocks covering most of the bare cement Dome floor.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-image layout-horizontal  subscriber-hide  tnt-inline-asset With the thousand musicians at their assigned stations, Zaffagnini led them in the Rockin\u20191000 oath. They swore \u201cto play only the notes that are needed and nothing more,\u201d to not play during breaks, to stay in time with the \u201cclick track\u201d in their headphones and to \u201chave fun and give it all you\u2019ve got.\u201d<\/p>\n<h3>A powerful sound<\/h3>\n<p>With that, Connick sang the \u201cHouse of the Rising Sun\u201d lines that open \u201cThe Saints Are Coming.\u201d As Daniel Plentz and the New Orleans Jazz Museum\u2019s Greg Lambousy conducted from opposite sides, the musicians spread across the entire Dome floor jumped in en masse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div data-breakout=\"6\" style=\"position:relative;\">\n<div class=\"col-md-8\">\n<p>The sound was powerful. It was even more powerful for Nirvana\u2019s \u201cSmells Like Teen Spirit.\u201d The 200 or so singers arrayed on the tiered center stage gave the chorus a &#8220;whoa&#8221;-worthy wallop.<\/p>\n<p>Metallica\u2019s \u201cEnter Sandman\u201d packed even more of a punch when the main riff, rendered by 200-plus guitarists, kicked in. Two days of group rehearsals, the click tracks, and the Rockin\u20191000 audio team\u2019s technical wizardry made for a cohesive arrangement.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-image
