I then lived at home all through college,\u201d Savannah <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.today.com\/parents\/moms\/savannah-guthrie-mom-nancy-guthrie-selfless-act-rcna84183\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said on the morning show <\/a>in 2022. \u2018We didn\u2019t have money to afford the dorm. And that was thing one, but the other was that my sister and I really felt like we should stick with my mom and not leave her alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Savannah Guthrie spoke about her mom\u2019s most selfless act on \u201cToday\u201d four years before Nancy went missing. <span class=\"credit\">NBC<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Savannah said Nancy pushed her to move to Montana for her first news job at age 21. <span class=\"credit\">savannahguthrie\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<p>\u201cBut when I moved to Butte, Montana, this was it,\u201d Savannah added. \u201cAnd it was really hard for me to leave her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The famous journalist explained that when she got her first news job in Montana at the age of 21, Nancy was Savannah\u2019s biggest supporter. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd that\u2019s when she said, \u2018If you can\u2019t leave me, then I didn\u2019t do my job right, Savannah,&#8217;\u201d she recalled. \u201cShe just gave me permission to go, you know?\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Nancy supported Savannah\u2019s decision to move away even after Savannah\u2019s dad died suddenly. <span class=\"credit\">savannahguthrie\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>\u201cThat\u2019s when she said, \u2018If you can\u2019t leave me, then I didn\u2019t do my job right, Savannah.&#8217;\u201d <span class=\"credit\">savannahguthrie\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cShe could have held onto me,\u201d Savannah added of her mother. \u201cIt wouldn\u2019t have taken very much. If she said, \u2018Well, you know, Savannah maybe you could find something a little closer to home\u2026&#8217;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Savannah also recognized that Nancy pushed her to move to Montana not because she wanted her to leave, but because she wanted Savannah to achieve her \u201cdreams\u201d of being a broadcaster. <\/p>\n<p>And that turned out to be an important life lesson for Savannah, who <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2024\/12\/17\/parents\/savannah-guthrie-shares-rare-photos-with-husband-michael-feldman-2-kids-and-introduces-new-family-member\/\">has two children of her own, <\/a>daughter Vale, 11, and son Charley, 9, with husband Michael Feldman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou don\u2019t spoon feed your kids. You teach them how to eat for themselves,\u201d Savannah explained of what she learned from her mom. \u201cIt\u2019s like everything. If we\u2019re doing it right, there, they should be self-sufficient. They\u2019re not supposed to be needy. They\u2019re not supposed to need us. And also, we\u2019re not supposed to be the center of their universes.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Savannah said Nancy\u2019s selfless act taught her how to raise her own kids. <span class=\"credit\">savannahguthrie\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><figcaption>Savannah has two kids, a son and a daughter, with husband Michael Feldman. <span class=\"credit\">savannahguthrie\/Instagram<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Savannah, who was raised in Tucson, Arizona, was only 16 years old when her dad Charles died suddenly of a heart attack. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe loss of my father was shocking and devastating. It cracked open our family and crushed us,\u201d Savannah shared in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/people.com\/savannah-guthrie-opens-up-impact-of-losing-dad-charles-at-16-exclusive-8597636\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an interview with People<\/a> in 2024. \u201cHe was our center. We just idealized him and adored him. He was larger than life, and funny, and charming, and adorable.\u00a0His loss was so sudden and so shocking.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While Savannah lost her dad young, her mom has been one of the most important people in her life.
