Meryl Streep<\/a> is slated to play Joni Mitchell<\/a> in a new biopic, according to music mogul Clive Davis<\/a>.<\/p>\n

The 76-year-old Oscar-winner \u2013 who stars in the new Devil Wears Prada 2 trailer <\/a>\u2013 has long been rumored to be in contention to take the lead role in a film about the music legend, 82.<\/p>\n

The project is being made by music writer-turned-director Cameron Crowe, and Davis seems to have confirmed the casting news.<\/p>\n

According to Rolling Stone<\/a>, Davis made the revelation during his annual pre-Grammy Awards party in Los Angeles<\/a> on Saturday night.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The publication reported the music industry veteran took to the stage to welcome his celebrity guests and when greeting Mitchell, declared she would be portrayed by Streep in Crowe’s biopic.<\/p>\n

Streep has been linked to the role since 2024 but an official announcement has yet to be made.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Anya Taylor-Joy has also been linked to the project, with reports suggesting she may play a younger version of the singer onscreen.<\/p>\n

Crowe has been working on the film for many years and recently suggested it would be entering production in 2026.<\/p>\n

During a 2025 interview with the New York Times<\/a>, he was asked about his friendship with Mitchell and replied: ‘I am friends with Joni Mitchell. Proudly.<\/p>\n

‘In the best way. She was my best interview at Rolling Stone. The ’79 interview that we did when she was putting out the Mingus album was, by far, the best interview I did there.’<\/p>\n

When pressed for details about his biopic, the director explained: ‘We’re going to make it next year. There’s not a lot I can say about it.<\/p>\n

‘Soon I’ll be able to speak more definitively about who’s in it and how we’re gonna do it and everything.’<\/p>\n

The filmmaker added: ‘I actually had a dream of a structure of how to tell that story. So I called [Mitchell’s] place and told her right-hand person that I’d had this dream, and if somebody comes knocking, come to me first and I’ll tell you this idea and we’ll see what happens.<\/p>\n

‘She’s like: “They’re knocking all the time, and Joni wonders why you’ve taken so long to call. So yes, come over and tell us what your idea is.”‘<\/p>\n

Cameron added: ‘This was about four and a half years ago. Joni said: “Let’s spend every Monday night. You come over here, we’ll talk. You ask me anything you want.”<\/p>\n

‘So that’s what I’ve been doing all this time. It’s been incredibly inspiring \u2013 the most I’ve interviewed anybody, the deepest-tissue kind of conversations I’ve had with any artist, and I’ve found it invigorating and can’t wait to make the movie.’<\/p>\n

The living legend and producer Patrick Milligan earned a Grammy award on Sunday night for Best Historical Album for the retrospective collection Joni Mitchell Archives: Volume 4 – The Asylum Years – (1976-1980).<\/a><\/p>\n

When they took the stage, Mitchell said with a laugh, ‘This is the most glitter and glam I ever saw at the Grammys<\/a>,’ before going silent.<\/p>\n

Milligan nudged her and asked, ‘You gonna say anything?’ to which Mitchell replied, ‘Did I win?’<\/p>\n

‘We did,’ he said, prompting her to gasp, ‘Oh, I won? Oh,’ as the audience laughed and applauded.<\/p>\n

Mitchell suffered a brain aneurysm in 2015 and largely withdrew from the public eye as she relearned to speak and walk<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
