Rose had moved to Santa Fe, New Mexico, in 2020 after a decade ensconced in New Orleans\u2019 singer-songwriter community. But needing \u201ca perspective shift,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/therealestherrose.substack.com\/p\/track-diary-want-pt-2\" target=\"_blank\">she says<\/a>, she came back to town for a few weeks to be around friends, work on her forthcoming album, and continue to write music.<\/p>\n<p>Rose had been in a raw, emotional place, and the crowded Shitty Stones show gave her space to \u201cexcavate my heart,\u201d she sings on \u201cWant Pt. 2,\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/estherrosemusic.bandcamp.com\/track\/want-pt-2\" target=\"_blank\">the closing track<\/a> to her 2025 album, \u201cWant.\u201d She found immediate inspiration for the reflective song in that night at Poor Boys, including the profound lyric, \u201cYour heart will keep breaking until it stays open,\u201d spoken to Rose by folk musician <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.omgina.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Gina Leslie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was going through a lot of questions about partnership and what I want from the album, having a lot of doubts,\u201d Rose says. \u201cSo hearing that line from Gina in that moment felt like a touchstone, something I didn\u2019t want to forget.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s like that paradox that\u2019s so human,\u201d she adds, \u201cwhich is we all want love and to experience love, but nobody wants to get hurt anymore \u2026 You have to be willing to put it on the line and get hurt and be vulnerable and expose yourself. That\u2019s part of growing and loving other people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose is again spending time in New Orleans during Carnival and plays a show <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dice.fm\/event\/rynbgq-esther-rose-thomas-dollbaum-sundarta-5th-feb-saturn-bar-new-orleans-tickets\" target=\"_blank\">at 9 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5<\/a>, at Saturn Bar with Thomas Dollbaum and Sundarta. Rose and Dollbaum also will tour the West Coast together in March.<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Esther Rose - &quot;New Bad&quot; [Official Music Video]\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/cI9t6MqMyUk?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Rose released her fifth full-length album, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/estherrosemusic.bandcamp.com\/album\/want\" target=\"_blank\">the alt-country record \u201cWant,\u201d<\/a> last May and earned praise from publications MOJO, No Depression and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/americansongwriter.com\/esther-rose-discusses-her-deeply-personal-new-album-want-exclusive\/\" target=\"_blank\">American Songwriter<\/a>. The album also landed on Stereogum\u2019s list of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/stereogum.com\/2483029\/the-10-best-country-albums-of-2025\/lists\/year-in-review\/2025-in-review#:~:text=Esther%20Rose%20%2D%20Want%20(New%20West)\" target=\"_blank\">10 best country albums<\/a> of 2025.<\/p>\n<p>Rose\u2019s songwriting has always been straight from the gut and the heart. Vulnerability in her music isn\u2019t new, and the directness has resonated with listeners. But on \u201cWant,\u201d Rose found herself revealing more of herself in songs tackling complex and emotional topics.<\/p>\n<p>She reflects on her restlessness both in places and in relationships, confronts the contradictions of what she may want in life, and notes the rawness that can come from therapy work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWith this album, I felt like I was able to feel powerful in my vulnerability, and that felt new,\u201d she says. \u201cI am sharing, vulnerable, laid open, and in that I\u2019m finding this massive strength.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rose spends a lot of time on the road, but after wrapping up a tour for her 2023 album, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/estherrosemusic.bandcamp.com\/album\/safe-to-run\" target=\"_blank\">\u201cSafe to Run,\u201d<\/a> she was feeling burnt out when she got back to Santa Fe. She knew she had to make some changes, so Rose asked for help and hired a manager. She also decided to quit alcohol and dive further into therapy, and a lot of that reflection influenced the songs on \u201cWant.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" style=\"border: 0; width: 100%; height: 120px;\" src=\"https:\/\/bandcamp.com\/EmbeddedPlayer\/album=1978300051\/size=large\/bgcol=ffffff\/linkcol=0687f5\/tracklist=false\/artwork=small\/track=611554638\/transparent=true\/\" width=\"320\" height=\"240\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>When it came time to record the album, Rose turned to several New Orleans-based friends, including guitarist Kunal Prakash of the band <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.silversynthetic.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Silver Synthetic<\/a> (and The Shitty Stones), <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.deslondes.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">The Deslondes\u2019<\/a> Howe Pearson and John James Tourville, and Gina Leslie, who plays bass here. Ross Fabre produced the album and appears with his <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.videoageband.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Video Age<\/a> bandmate Ray Micarelli on the track \u201ctailspin.\u201d Singer-songwriter Dean Johnson also guests on the duet \u201cScars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWant\u201d is rooted in country, but with a full band behind her, Rose expands her sound into indie rock and pop. She can ease the energy back, like on the bare, piano-backed performance on \u201cColor Wheel,\u201d and accelerate things with songs like \u201cKetamine\u201d and \u201cNew Bad.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI really believe in this album and everything that it kind of took to get to the point of writing these songs,\u201d Rose says. \u201cJoni Mitchell has this quote from when she wrote \u2018Blue,\u2019 that her skin felt like cellophane at the time of writing it.
