Victoria and Vancouver Island have a lot of musical talent, and Victoria Buzz wants to highlight some of the best and brightest local artists and bands.<\/span><\/p>\n

Every Monday, there will be a fresh \u2018New Music Monday\u2019 article to help people find and support local artists and bands that are up-and-coming, well established or hidden gems!<\/span><\/p>\n

For this endeavour, Victoria Buzz has partnered with our good friends at <\/span>CFUV 101.9 FM<\/b><\/a>, UVic\u2019s campus radio station, to find and select the musicians and bands for this regular column.<\/span><\/p>\n

This week, <\/span>CORRODE<\/b><\/a> is the New Music Monday highlight!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Since releasing their debut EP, Demonstration, <\/i><\/strong><\/a>in July 2024<\/strong>, Victoria-based hardcore outfit CORRODE has been hard at work writing, recording and playing shows.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Now, they have a new split EP out with Slewfoot, who are based out of Barrie, Ontario.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CORRODE is comprised of Dalton Kuijer on drums, Nia Al-Maliky on vocals and Aiden Shepherd on bass and Kallum McIntosh on guitar, with the added support of Colton Porter who recorded with the band on this split.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cColton\u2019s in this really cool black metal band called Impalement,\u201d Kuijer told Victoria Buzz.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cHe joined us for a while and he wrote a couple new tracks with us, including one of the ones on the split, and he recorded with us for that split.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

With a slightly different lineup, CORRODE played a number of shows through the last year and a half, all while thinking about what they wanted to do for their next release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Ultimately, they opted to find another band to collaborate with on a split release and find a record label to release it for them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

CORRODE recorded their two songs meant for the split in May 2025, and had lined up a label in the United States, but then the collaboration fell apart.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Despite the split falling through, the band remained determined and wanted to find another band to contribute to the split.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt all kind of just fell through,\u201d said Kuijer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSo after sitting on these songs for so long and wondering what the hell was going on, I decided to reach out to some friends back home in Ontario.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

A friend recommended Slewfoot as a collaborator, who were just about to go into the studio to record some of their new material, so Kuijer reached out to see if they could work a deal out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cSlewfoot is really, really good. I love their music, they\u2019re so heavy and they are a hockey themed hardcore band which is so sick,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Slewfoot agreed and wanted in on the split, so Kuijer next turned his attention towards finding a record label to release the finished product.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

He ended up talking to End Note Records, based out of Connecticut and southern Ontario, who were instantly into releasing the split.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey got back to us really quickly, and are going to release tapes, and then we released it like, two days later,\u201d said Kuijer.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Highlight tracks \u2013 \u201cNothing Left to Give\u201d and \u201cThreat Display\u201d<\/b><\/h3>\n

Al-Maliky says that \u201cNothing Left to Give\u201d is the favourite of the two among her bandmates, but \u201cThreat Display\u201d holds a special place in her heart, as it was the first that she wrote all the lyrics for.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI wrote the lyrics for it when I came to tryouts,\u201d she explained.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s kind of funny, because at the time of recording, \u2018Nothing Left to Give\u2019 was our newest song and \u2018Threat Display\u2019 was our oldest song,\u201d Kuijer added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Both said that it\u2019s interesting to listen to the two tracks back-to-back, because you can hear the growth in the band\u2019s sound between them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Al-Maliky says she wrote \u201cNothing Left to Give\u201d when she was feeling particularly drained by life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was kind of in the trenches, working a lot of overtime, and just being really burnt out,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI was feeling drained from every facet of life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Meanwhile, she says \u201cThreat Display\u201d is one of the more lyrically significant songs she wrote with CORRODE.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt kind of mirrors mental health struggles, and the whole meaning of a threat display is kind of a bluffing behavior that animals do, like intimidating someone with no intent to hurt them,\u201d said Al-Maliky.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIts a nod to life making you tougher than you actually want to be, if that makes sense.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n
