UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. \u2014 The Penn State School of Music will welcome the Year of the Lunar New Year with a vibrant, family-friendly concert on\u00a0Friday, Feb. 13, at 5 p.m.\u00a0in\u00a0Recital Hall\u00a0at the School of Music. The\u00a0Lunar New Year Concert\u00a0will feature performances by Penn State faculty, students, community\u00a0musicians\u00a0and young performers, celebrating musical traditions from across East Asia and beyond.\u00a0Admission is free.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The event will begin with a\u00a0pre-concert instrument showcase and children\u2019s activities from 4:15 to 4:45 p.m.\u00a0in the Recital Hall lobby, hosted by the\u00a0Penn State Asian Classical Music Club. Audience members will have the opportunity to learn about traditional instruments, while families can enjoy arts and crafts designed for young attendees.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The concert will open at 5 p.m. with welcoming remarks, followed by a diverse program highlighting traditional and contemporary works for voice, piano, strings,\u00a0winds\u00a0and traditional Asian instruments.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The first half of the program will feature performances by a children\u2019s vocal ensemble singing the traditional New Year song\u00a0\u201cGong Xi Gong Xi (Best Wishes),\u201d\u00a0as well as Penn State\u2019s Concert Choir performing the beloved Korean folk song\u00a0\u201cArirang,\u201d\u00a0arranged by Hyo Won Woo and conducted by Professor Christopher\u00a0Kiver.\u00a0Additional\u00a0selections include works by\u00a0YoungJu\u00a0Jung, Gao Ping, Fan Shang-e\u00a0and Gesang Daji and HyeKyung Lee, showcasing collaborations between Penn State faculty,\u00a0students\u00a0and local middle school musicians.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Following a brief intermission, the second half will highlight ensemble performances by members of the\u00a0Penn State Asian Classical Music Club, including\u00a0\u201cMarch of the Elephant King\u201d\u00a0by Guan\u00a0Dazhou\u00a0and\u00a0\u201cDance of the Golden Snake\u201d\u00a0by Nie Er, featuring guzheng, pipa, erhu, dizi, percussion and piano. The program will also include a poetry and music collaboration in\u00a0\u201cWater\u201d\u00a0by Jeong Kang Kim, with Korean poetry recitation by Professor Jungwoo Ryoo, chancellor of Penn State DuBois; and\u00a0Hyeseon\u00a0Kim.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The concert will conclude with chamber and solo works by Yuko\u00a0Uebayashi, Xian\u00a0Sihua\u00a0and An-Lun Huang, performed by Penn State faculty and guest artists.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The performance is expected to conclude between\u00a06:15 and 6:30 p.m., followed by a\u00a0reception in the Recital Hall lobby until 7 p.m.\u00a0<\/p>\n
