At the eight-hour event, nearly 200 people (among them Tony winners and elected officials)\u00a0provided short speeches, reflections, and songs. See the full livestream, now archived, in the video above.<\/p>\n<p>Musical performances included <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/laura-benanti-vault-0000061890\">Laura Benanti<\/a> performing &#8220;Edelweiss&#8221; from <em>The Sound of Music,<\/em>\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/shaina-taub\">Shaina Taub<\/a> performing her original song &#8220;Huddled Masses,&#8221; <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/nikki-m-james-vault-0000046236\">Nikki M. James<\/a> performed\u00a0&#8220;Wait My Turn&#8221; from Taub&#8217;s musical\u00a0<em>Suffs<\/em>, and\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/michael-cerveris-vault-0000093175\">Michael Cerveris<\/a> performed \u201cOhio\u201d by Crosby, Stills, Nash &amp; Young. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/sara-bareilles-2\">Sara Bareilles<\/a> also performed a new original song, &#8220;Heartland&#8221;\u2014which began with the lyrics: &#8220;I am a woman \/ I am a gift \/ I stand on the edge of promise so you know where it is \/ Give me your tired and poor \/ Trying to be free \/ Oh huddled masses just asking for mercy \/ Bring them all to me \/ I am the woman you make of me in the heart land.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The event\u2014attended by almost 3,000 people in person with 12,000 views online\u2014comes amidst a controversial expansion of\u00a0immigration enforcement by ICE. The federal agency\u00a0has descended upon Minnesota and other U.S. cities, carelessly capturing and detaining without due process undocumented immigrants, legal residents, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbsnews.com\/minnesota\/news\/us-citizens-arrested-by-ice-minneapolis\/\" target=\"_blank\">even\u00a0U.S. citizens<\/a>;\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.pbs.org\/newshour\/nation\/a-u-s-citizen-says-ice-forced-open-the-door-to-his-minnesota-home-and-removed-him-in-his-underwear-after-a-warrantless-search\" target=\"_blank\">entering homes without warrants<\/a>\u00a0; and<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/01\/23\/us\/minneapolis-man-pepper-sprayed-pinned-video.html\" target=\"_blank\"> pepper spraying\u00a0protesters in the face.<\/a> The people of Minnesota have protested in response to what many characterize as unconstitutional and illegal conduct, including the killing of at least two U.S. citizens:\u00a0Ren\u00e9e Nicole Good and Alex Pretti.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Public Theater\u00a0Executive Director Patrick Willingham kicked off the event, saying in his remarks:\u00a0\u201cWe gather on these steps today because something has broken in the contract between a government and its people &#8230; These are our fellow human beings, no matter the color of our skin or where we were born. People with every right to breathe the air of this country, to walk its streets, to dream of life\u2019s possibilities, to participate fully in our society\u2026and simply to live in this country that aspires to the ideals of liberty and justice for all.\u201d He also noted, of the freezing temperatures outside, \u201cIt\u2019s cold out! And it\u2019s been even colder in the streets of Minneapolis where people have been standing for weeks, mobilizing for justice and to protect their neighbors.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"bsp-article-enhancement align-\">\n<figure class=\"bsp-img-with-meta\">\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<figcaption>\n\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"bsp-img-caption\"><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\tChristine Baranski<br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"bsp-img-credit\">HanJie Chow<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The &#8220;People&#8217;s Filibuster&#8221; included speeches and performances from a wide array of guests.\u00a0To name just a few of the spoken word performances:\u00a0Peter Dinklage recited\u00a0National Youth Poet Laureate Amanda Gorman&#8217;s poem for Ren\u00e9e Nicole Good, who was shot and killed through the window of her car\u00a0by an ICE agent\u00a0on January 8.\u00a0Christine\u00a0Baranski recited an excerpt from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/george-orwell\">George Orwell<\/a>&#8216;s dystopian novel\u00a0<em>1984<\/em>, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/joe-tippett-vault-0000126003\">Joe Tippett<\/a> read Emma Lazurus&#8217; &#8220;The\u00a0New Colossus.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/cynthia-nixon-performer\">Cynthia Nixon<\/a> read\u00a0V\u00e1clav Havel&#8217;s &#8220;The Power of the Powerless,&#8221; which reads: &#8220;To live in truth is simply to refuse to participate in what we know to be false. It is to speak plainly, to act as ourselves, to accept the risk that comes with integrity. This refusal may seem small, but when one person steps out of the lie, the lie becomes visible, and once it is visible, it becomes fragile&#8230;Freedom does not begin with victory, it begins with responsibility, with the decision to stop pretending.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Playwright and performer <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" data-crosslink=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/playbill.com\/person\/jordan-e-cooper-writer\">Jordan E. Cooper<\/a> delivered his own speech, &#8220;Rock of Hope,&#8221; which states: &#8220;Don&#8217;t be afraid to throw your rock into the pond of this country. I know there are days where it seems your rock makes nothing but a small ripple in the pond, and I know there are days where it seems like that rock may just sink down to the bottom of darkness and disappear into a void of nothing. But I stand here to remind you that we are not the first rocks thrown into this pond.\u00a0There are rocks from the warriors who endured 400 years of slavery. There are rocks from the survivors of concentration camps and Auschwitz. There are rocks from the blood-stained streets of Selma, Alabama, there are rocks from the voices of a generation against Vietnam. There are rocks from the graveyard of Gaza. And there are rocks from the front lines of Minneapolis, Minnesota. So next time you throw your rock into the pond of this dark world, don&#8217;t image the sound of a splash. Don&#8217;t imagine the sound of a solid hope sinking to a floor.
