She and her peers struggled to get movies off the ground. <\/p>\n<p>So she bought a historic movie theater in  L.A., emboldened to help save theatergoing in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-09-21\/in-the-age-of-streaming-las-revival-cinemas-offer-something-more\">city that started it all.<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Stewart  purchased and is restoring the Highland Theatre,  a cultural landmark that  once hosted vaudeville acts. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen people are desperate, they start doing desperate things,\u201d Stewart said <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=KBMW_Ir1AwE\" target=\"_blank\">in an interview<\/a> with Architectural Digest. \u201cI think buying this theater feels a little desperate in like the most beautiful way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The theater <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2024-03-01\/highland-theatre-highland-park-movie-theater-closed\">shut its doors<\/a> nearly two years ago \u2014 less than a week short of its 100th anniversary. The owner, Dan Akarakian,  told The Times in 2024 the theater was unable to recover economically from the COVID-19 pandemic. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverything that\u2019s already living here is so beautiful. It just needs to be like taken care of,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cI mean, the place is falling down. We definitely need like a lot of help, but it\u2019s worth it.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>The local film and TV industry in  L.A. <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-01-09\/the-pandemic-production-slowdown-and-now-fire-how-hollywood-workers-are-grappling-with-the-latest-hurdle\">was struggling<\/a> long before wildfires that ravaged the city early last year dealt another blow, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/business\/story\/2025-01-16\/2024-was-a-tough-year-for-hollywood-jobs-but-there-are-some-bright-spots\">halting production<\/a> and threatening the homes of stars and crews alike. <\/p>\n<p>Stewart, who  first achieved international success with her role as Bella Swan in the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2024-01-12\/kristen-stewart-twilight-gay-movie-queer-fans\">\u201cTwilight\u201d saga,<\/a> said movie theatergoing is becoming a lost art, as \u201cpeople are watching movies on their tablets and their TVs and likely watching a couple of things at once.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart hopes the theater can become \u201ca space that families can go and that also filmmakers can go and so we can kind of be in service of each other,\u201d she said. \u201cWe can be in actual communication with people and not cut off from each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The three-story building has theater rooms and venue space, ideal to host screenings and public community events, she said. <\/p>\n<p>The theater was designed by architect Lewis Arthur Smith, known for other local theaters like <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2023-11-07\/quentin-tarantino-vista-theatre-movie-cinema-november-reopening\">the Vista<\/a> in Los Feliz and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/archives\/la-xpm-1993-02-10-me-1247-story.html\">El Portal<\/a> in North Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s an opportunity to make a space to gather and scheme and dream together,\u201d Stewart said. \u201cThis project is about creating a new school and restructuring our processes, finding a better way forward.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stewart\u2019s effort to save local cinema is not new. A coalition of filmmakers led by \u201cJuno\u201d director Jason Reitman <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2024-02-21\/jason-reitman-leads-a-group-of-directors-in-buying-village-theater-in-westwood\">purchased<\/a> the 93-year-old Village Theater in Westwood in 2024. <\/p>\n<p>Oscar-winning writer-director Quentin Tarantino <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2021-07-05\/quentin-tarantino-buys-vista-theatre-los-feliz\">bought the Vista,<\/a> also designed by Smith, in 2021. The theater <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/movies\/story\/2023-11-07\/quentin-tarantino-vista-theatre-movie-cinema-november-reopening\">reopened its doors<\/a> over two years later. <\/p>\n<p>Stewart, who was raised in the San Fernando Valley, has been a longstanding advocate of the L.A. community. She works closely with the Downtown Women\u2019s Center, which provides housing to homeless women. <\/p>\n<p>The actor decried the lack of stories by and for women in Hollywood during her keynote speech <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.latimes.com\/entertainment-arts\/awards\/story\/2025-11-05\/kristen-stewart-academy-womens-luncheon-oscars\">at the annual Academy Women\u2019s Luncheon<\/a> in November. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cI absolutely f\u2014 love this city,\u201d she said. \u201cI like the spaciousness.
