She got a standing ovation from the audience at last Saturday\u2019s<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/news\/music-educator-award-recipient-2026-grammys\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Special Merit Awards Ceremony<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in Los Angeles, which included<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.grammy.com\/news\/special-merit-awards-2026-grammys-honorees-recording-academy\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">music legends<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>like Chaka Khan and Elton John&#8217;s songwriting partner Bernie Taupin, who shook Jimenez \u2018s hand and congratulated her afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was flabbergasted,\u201d said Jimenez, director of magnet bands at<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.southmiamiseniorhigh.org\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">South Miami Senior<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>High School. \u201cI was like, \u2018You guys are icons, why are you standing?\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>They stood for Jimenez\u2019s passion for her life\u2019s work. \u201cMusic education builds connection,\u201d she said in a thank you speech, which brought some at the ceremony to tears. \u201cIt fosters empathy. It creates a shared space where people from different backgrounds and beliefs find belonging and strength, especially in times of need. Music unites us by asking us to listen to one another and work towards a common purpose. When we invest in music education, we are investing in children. Children who learn that their voices matter, that differences can co-exist in harmony, and that they never stand alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><figcaption><span>Jennifer Jimenez with Jordan Michael Sticka, President\/CEO of the GRAMMY Museum, left, and Harvey Mason Jr., president\/CEO of the Recording Academy. <em>Photo courtesy of the Recording Academy.<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Speaking by phone Sunday from Los Angeles, Jimenez, who was a finalist for the award last year, said she was grateful the Recording Academy was recognizing the mission that inspires her and countless others.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis award spotlights the work every music educator does across the country,\u201d said Jimenez as she prepared to head to the main GRAMMY Awards. \u201cI so appreciate the GRAMMYS elevating the teachers who are contributing to the growth of all these musicians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She credited the Frost School as a crucial inspiration for that work.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGreat teachers become great teachers because they have great teachers,\u201d said Jimenez, who has taught at South Miami Senior for 19 years. \u201cBeing at the Frost School and around the faculty there was indelible for me.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Florida high school band director named 2026 Grammy Music Educator Award honoree\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/M1MJALCQLtM?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<p>Jimenez had an unlikely journey to that indelible experience. She grew up in the<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Quad_Cities\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Quad Cities<\/a>, an area straddling Iowa, Illinois, and Nebraska. Her father was a pastor, while her mother gave up teaching to raise their children. Although money was tight, they made sure their daughter had piano lessons. In middle school, she joined the band, where she was elated to discover she could learn to play drums, and that being a band director was a job. \u201cI came home and told my mom I wanted to do that,\u201d Jimenez said. In high school, she got a scholarship to attend Michigan\u2019s famed<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/explore.interlochen.org\/arts-camp-overview?utm_medium=cpc&amp;utm_source=google&amp;utm_campaign=iac_gen&amp;utm_content=711529060969_170170956932_21481941097&amp;utm_term=interlochen%20summer%20camp_e_c&amp;gad_source=1&amp;gad_campaignid=21481941097&amp;gbraid=0AAAAAD-gkrcO9EIRL97e1NUB-_sOZifT1&amp;gclid=Cj0KCQiAnJHMBhDAARIsABr7b85tevLLOp0cfQGBj77kiNcSe5JhatW-42sczjF9i4zvhQlCNl3JhJcaApqTEALw_wcB\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Interlochen Arts Camp<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>for two summers, where instructor<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/keithaleo.com\/bio\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Keith Aleo<\/a>, then on the percussion faculty at the Frost School, where he had also studied, urged her to audition.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe said, \u2018It\u2019s the best place you\u2019ll ever be,\u2019\u201d Jimenez said. They persuaded her parents to fly her to Miami. She fell in love with the campus and the Frost School, which offered her a generous scholarship. She entered as a percussion major. That changed freshman year, when she joined the Frost Wind Ensemble, led by former professor and director of bands<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/education.musicforall.org\/clinician\/gary-green\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Gary Green<\/a>. \u201cBeing in his ensemble changed my trajectory,\u201d said Jimenez. \u201cThe way he was able to motivate students and put all these great alumni into the community really impacted me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She became a double major in music education and percussion, and played in the Frost Band of the Hour. She also fell in love with Miami, whose vibrant mix of cultures, peoples, and musics reminded her of the Quad Cities. \u201cBeing at UM was like being home,\u201d she said. \u201cI didn\u2019t know I had craved that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She is an enthusiastic Cane who has become deeply integrated into the community. Her Miami native husband is a pastor near the University of Miami campus. Their 6th-grade daughter plays French horn, while their 9th-grade son plays alto saxophone in Jimenez\u2019s program and says he wants to attend the Frost School. In addition to her teaching, Jimenez is the principal percussionist for the Miami Symphony Orchestra.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Frost School alumna Jennifer Jimenez speaking at the GRAMMY ceremony where she was honored as music educator of the year. She\u2019s received a flurry of attention, with a feature on<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/M1MJALCQLtM?si=Sf2LCqERhXjS7-wY\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">CBS Mornings<\/a>,<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/news\/local\/education\/article314545698.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a story<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>in the Miami Herald, and social media tributes from<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DURIil2Fiy5\/?img_index=3\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Miami-Dade Public Schools<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DUQ4C5lDmLI\/?img_index=1\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Only in Dade<\/a>, which has two million followers.<\/p>\n<p>Jimenez has stayed close to the Frost School, where faculty praise her as an important partner who regularly mentors their music education students as interns.<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/bandofthehour.miami.edu\/staff\/mckenziec\/index.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Craig McKenzie<\/a>, the Frost School&#8217;s associate director of bands and<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/news.miami.edu\/frost\/stories\/2026\/01\/fboth-playoff.html\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">a leader<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>of the Frost Band of the Hour, stepped in for her at South Miami Senior while she was in Los Angeles.<\/p>\n<p>Her high school students adore her. She has led them to perform at Carnegie Hall and two Super Bowls, in the 2010<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nfl.com\/news\/underwood-to-sing-national-anthem-at-super-bowl-xliv-09000d5d81606cb7\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">pregame<\/a><span>\u00a0<\/span>festivities with Queen Latifah and Carrie Underwood, and in the 2020 halftime show with<span>\u00a0<\/span><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/pILCn6VO_RU?si=5XC0HxwyTDd4GUd_\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Shakira and Jennifer Lopez<\/a>, where guest star Bad Bunny congratulated them with high fives afterwards.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"image\"><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Jennifer Jimenez with Frost School interim vice dean Serona Elton at the GRAMMY festivities in Los Angeles.\" class=\"\" height=\"385\" src=\"https:\/\/news.miami.edu\/frost\/_assets\/images\/images-stories\/2026\/02\/4-musiceducator940x529.webp\" width=\"684\"\/><figcaption><span>Jennifer Jimenez with Frost School interim vice dean Serona Elton at the Person of the Year gala at the 2026 GRAMMY festivities in Los Angeles. <em>Photo courtesy of the Frost School of Music.<\/em><\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Her high school students built Jimenez a wooden podium, since the band program\u2019s budget is devoted to things like maintaining their aging instruments, and engraved her deceased parents\u2019 names on the bottom.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy students told me that every time I step onto that podium, they hope I feel [my parents\u2019] love lifting me, just as music and this program have lifted them,\u201d Jimenez said in her speech. \u201cCue me ugly crying at a concert.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She urges her fellow music teachers to nominate one another for the Music Educator award and for communities to support music education in their schools. South Miami Senior has sometimes had to limit enrollment in the band program because it didn\u2019t have enough instruments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a staunch champion for our community and our kids and the idea that every kid deserves to hold an instrument,\u201d Jimenez said. \u201cSupport is essential.
