Cody Johnson<\/a><\/strong> released his latest studio album, Leather<\/em>, in 2023, following with the deluxe version in 2024 to create a double album. The 38-year-old country star is now working on his next project, and it seems he\u2019s pretty far along.<\/p>\n

Speaking to Katie Neal on Audacy\u2019s Katie & Company<\/em><\/a>, Johnson revealed that he recently spent a week in the studio recording vocals for his new album. <\/p>\n

The Texas native indicated that his next project won\u2019t be another double album, since he feels \u201clike a lot of songs don\u2019t get the light of day that they deserve whenever there\u2019s that many songs,\u201d but he did take a \u201chalf and half approach to this record\u201d as far as its sonic direction.<\/p>\n

\u201cSome of this stuff is, like, so stone-cold country, or it\u2019s, like, so left Motown, or it\u2019s, like, really leaning rock, or it\u2019s really leaning bluegrass,\u201d he revealed. \u201cI don\u2019t have a radio agenda with those songs. It\u2019s just I recorded these songs because I love these songs, and I wanted you to hear me sing these songs. So you can take about half of that and put it over here, for this is who I am. And then you\u2019re going to hear certain ones on the record where you\u2019re like, \u2018Okay, that\u2019s going to be huge. That\u2019s going to be a big song, and you\u2019re going to hear that one on the radio.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

Some of those big songs may be duets, as Johnson shared that there will be a couple on his new project, including collaborations with Luke Combs<\/a><\/strong> and Brothers Osborne, the latter of whom also asked him to appear on their upcoming record.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat was kind of a last-minute deal,\u201d Johnson revealed of his collaboration with the duo. \u201cI heard this song, and I was like, \u2018Man, this sounds like John and TJ.\u2019 And they had happened to be reaching out at the same time of like, \u2018Hey, when we do our next project, would you do this song with us?\u2019 And I was like, \u2018Yeah, absolutely. Would you do this with me on my project?\u2019 So it was kind of a trade-off.\u201d<\/p>\n

There are also a few collaborations on Johnson\u2019s new album that are still falling into place, including one artist he was on a phone call with just prior to his interview with Neal. \u201cThat person is in to do the collab so far,\u201d he confirmed. \u201cSo there\u2019s going to be some cool surprises on here.\u201d<\/p>\n

When it comes to narrowing down the tracks for the album, Johnson said he brings in his friends to help by getting their ears on his new music. <\/p>\n

\u201cI have a trick that I do, and I put them all in a Dropbox, and I\u2019ll just listen, especially for my friends that don\u2019t play music or don\u2019t know anything about music,\u201d he shared. \u201cI\u2019ll just ride around and just listen, get their reactions from the song. And after about a month, I\u2019ll notice there\u2019ll be two of them that I haven\u2019t clicked on in a month. And if I haven\u2019t clicked on it, I don\u2019t think you\u2019re going to click on it. It\u2019s not that it\u2019s a bad song, It\u2019s not that we did a bad job, It\u2019s just maybe it\u2019s not flowing with the rest of the songs on the project.\u201d<\/p>\n

Cody Johnson has yet to confirm a release date or title for his next album.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
