In this baroque sci-fi story set in the future, a homeless man (Rockwell) enters an LA diner armed with what looks like a terrorist bomb strapped to his chest. He announces he\u2019s from the future, sent to save the world from an imminent AI uprising.<\/p>\n
He\u2019s done this 117 times, he says. Continually resetting, he must organize a group among the diners to, yes, save the world as we know it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis was a no brainer,\u201d Rockwell, 57, said in a virtual interview. \u201cI mean, I met with Gore (Verbinski, the director behind the first three \u201cPirates of the Caribbean\u201d movies) and realized that we\u2019ve been talking about doing a couple of things \u2014 and this was the one.\u201d<\/p>\n
He\u2019s playing a character without a name, known simply as \u201cThe Man from the Future.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen I initially got together with Gore, I was doing a little more Kurt Russell vibe, like \u2018Escape from New York.\u2019 And Gore said, \u2018You know, it\u2019s too cool.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cThis guy\u2019s not really the best guy for the job,\u201d Rockwell acknowledged. \u201cHe\u2019s the bottom of the list. So I decided to pitch my voice a little higher and work on a couple of things.<\/p>\n
\u201cI started playing around with the Don Rickles thing, and a New York regionalism came out of that. Really, there\u2019s no justification for that if I\u2019m being honest.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut as far as being from the future, I don\u2019t know why he would have a regionalism at all.\u00a0\u00a0But it just kind of happened that way.\u201d<\/p>\n
As Future Man is lamenting and warning about an AI takeover of humanity, would he call this a comedy? A weird time travel movie? Or maybe an offbeat thriller?<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s kind of all that,\u201d Rockwell offered. \u201cIt\u2019s in the vein of \u2018Everything Everywhere All at Once.\u2019 Or \u2018Time Bandits\u2019 or Back to the Future.\u2019 But a little darker. It\u2019s definitely a dark comedy.\u201d<\/p>\n
As the star of a large, complicated scenario, how was it leading the troops for several months?<\/p>\n
\u201cWell, I could go into detail but it wasn\u2019t the easiest shoot. Because we went back and forth from day to nights, our sleeping habits were not great. And somehow we (the company)] got a stomach bug in Cape Town.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t know how, all of us got sick. And then, I don\u2019t want to bore you with all the bloody details, but the suit was a bit much too. And then I had, obviously, a lot of words to memorize.<\/p>\n
\u201cSo it wasn\u2019t always a picnic, but we really were there to make a great movie.\u201d<\/p>\n
