I kind of knew it was going to be Chelsea because she and Madison are so in love, and Chelsea is just so like, \u2018Let\u2019s go, let\u2019s go, let\u2019s go!\u2019 They\u2019re just very excited to live life, and it\u2019s great for it to be two women, and two women of color. Truly, that\u2019s just the most beautiful thing to me.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Bringing that pivotal moment to life carried deep weight for the actress. \u201cIt was nerve-wracking,\u201d Mantilla admits. \u201cIt was super emotional because of their really intense journey with Chelsea\u2019s kidnapping and Madison being by her side the whole time and finding her and rebuilding after that and then dealing with Chelsea\u2019s grandmother [being diagnosed with triple negative breast cancer] and how helpful she\u2019s been with that and Chelsea\u2019s mom [Dani Dupree, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/karla-mosley\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Karla Mosley;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Karla Mosley<\/a>] getting the BRCA gene. Madison has been through it all with Chelsea and this is just a culmination of their short but very wild love affair. I\u2019m really excited for them. She really just doubles down on that and won\u2019t take no for an answer.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Off-camera, Mantilla and McNeil have worked to make their connection as strong as it can be. \u201cWe\u2019re friends,\u201d says Mantilla. \u201cI don\u2019t know how she juggles it, but she actually has a job outside of this. With our schedules, we try to have brunch and lunch and talk about our characters and our relationships. She\u2019s just the absolute best. She\u2019s super patient, so professional, and she just comes with an absolute open heart, so how can you not love her? As Madison and as Kenjah, she\u2019s perfect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That bond has translated seamlessly to the screen. \u201cWe work really fast, and sometimes you\u2019re just kind of thrown in, and it\u2019s like, \u2018Act like you\u2019re in love,\u2019 and that\u2019s just what you have to do,\u201d notes Mantilla. \u201cBut it\u2019s been really easy with her.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">As the show approaches its anniversary, Mantilla marvels at how dramatically her life has changed since the premiere. \u201cI mean, it\u2019s insane in the best way,\u201d she reflects. \u201cIt has been life-changing for sure. It still feels new \u2014 this is my first on-screen job ever \u2014 but I have had the absolute grace to learn from <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/tamara-tunie\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Tamara Tunie;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Tamara Tunie<\/a> [Anita Dupree] and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.tvinsider.com\/people\/clifton-davis\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" data-ylk=\"slk:Clifton Davis;elm:context_link;itc:0;sec:content-canvas\" class=\"link \">Clifton Davis<\/a> [Vernon Dupree]. They\u2019re wonderful and have been helpful with everything. I really built a family here, and it\u2019s probably the hardest job I\u2019ve ever had, but it\u2019s the most rewarding, and it\u2019s such a blessing to bring Chelsea to the screen and bring her to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">That sense of purpose has extended to the show\u2019s heavier storylines, including its current cancer arc. Playing it out has meant a lot to Mantilla. \u201cI feel like everyone in the world has a connection to cancer,\u201d she says. \u201cI\u2019ve lost aunts to cancer so it\u2019s definitely close to home and playing that my grandmother on the show has cancer is heart-wrenching. When I read it, I was like, \u2018This is awful and heartbreaking,\u2019 but it\u2019s so necessary and I\u2019m glad we\u2019re bringing more attention to this topic.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Mantilla says she\u2019s been bolstered by the enthusiastic fan reaction to the soap, the characters, and the storylines. \u201cI got my first piece of fan mail the other day, which was really exciting,\u201d she shares. \u201cThey printed out some pictures of me to autograph, so I\u2019ve sent those out, and it\u2019s just wonderful to see people reacting online and on social media. My followers have gone up. Whether she thinks before she does something or thinks before she speaks, whatever she\u2019s going to do, she means it wholeheartedly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"mb-4 text-lg md:leading-8 break-words\">Looking ahead, Mantilla hopes her alter ego has a chance to enjoy the life she\u2019s dreamed of. \u201cChelsea and Madison are engaged now, and I just want our girl to just be happy and be satisfied with herself,\u201d she concludes. \u201cIt\u2019s kind of funny because Kenjah and I were just saying, \u2018Okay, they\u2019re happy now. What\u2019s going to happen?\u2019 Because there\u2019s always something that goes wrong. I\u2019m hoping that they can be happy for a while at least.
