He will receive $1.5 million in 2026 with a chance at another $500,000 in incentives.

A consensus top-100 prospect ahead of the 2022 season, Melendez has been unable to live up to expectations at the major league level. He has produced a .215/.297/.388 batting line with 52 homers and 75 doubles over his 1652 plate appearances. The bottom fell out on Melendez’s production in 2025 as he had five hits, including a pair of doubles and a home run, in 65 plate appearances, drawing three walks while striking out 23 times.

MJ Melendez worth a look for New York Mets

For the Mets, Melendez could be a worthwhile addition. A former catcher, Melendez has experience at both corner outfield spots. Although his last appearance as a catcher came in 2023, he could serve as a third catcher while getting time in the outfield and potentially at first base.

The Mets have an opening in left after trading outfielder Brandon Nimmo for second baseman Marcus Semien. Prospect Carson Benge is expected to have the opportunity to seize the starting role with a strong spring training, but nothing is guaranteed. As Benge has yet to make his major league debut, adding a player such as Melendez gives the Mets another option should he not be ready.

Melendez could also be a long-term option, even if he ends up as a utility player in New York. He is under team control through 2029 and could prove to be a bargain provided he can start to live up to his former top prospect billing.

‘ The preceding article may include information circulated by third parties ’

‘ Some details of this article were extracted from the following source www.yardbarker.com ’

The New York Mets are taking a low-cost flier on a former top prospect who may simply need a change of scenery.
