Behind him, a screen read: \u201cThe only thing more powerful than hate is love,\u201d a direct reference to his <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/2026-grammy-awards-4d631de5d968b51276a8f06b76580e20\">speech at the 2026 Grammy Awards<\/a> where the Puerto Rican superstar <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bad-bunny-grammys-2026-a20c758dd63542bd665d24e61269aa72\">took home the top prize.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">America, he seemed to be reminding his global audience including viewers in the U.S., makes up a number of countries in the Western Hemisphere. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">It was a poignant gesture for an artist whose performance was politicized the moment it was announced, labeled un-American by his detractors despite the fact that Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens. Most recently <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/donald-trump\">President Donald Trump<\/a> described his set as \u201can affront to the Greatness of America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A roll call of American nations <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In the final moments of his performance, Bad Bunny was joined by a crowd waving flags of different countries in the Americas, but also \u201cterritories of other countries like Bonaire or <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/us-virgin-islands\">the U.S. Virgin Islands,<\/a> \u201d said Petra Rivera-Rideau, associate professor of American studies at Wellesley College and co-author of \u201cP FKN R: How Bad Bunny Became the Global Voice of Puerto Rican Resistance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">He was also surrounded by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/bad-bunny-super-bowl-halftime-show-preview-f3b3f090beb4b74e958dfbe77c96222f\">plena musicians \u2014 a Puerto Rican genre<\/a> associated with community and protest \u2014 and held a football that read, \u201cTogether, we are America.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThis is a really profound statement of Latino belonging in the United States and immigrant belonging in the United States,\u201d Rivera-Rideau said. \u201cBad Bunny is obviously very aware of the backlash against this halftime show. And a lot of that backlash has to do with this assumption that because it\u2019s in Spanish, it\u2019s somehow excluding people. And I think what we saw last night with Bad Bunny\u2019s halftime show is that he was actually including people, inviting people into his world and at the same time, making a case that immigrants and Latinos are as much a fabric of the United States as anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Simultaneously, he made the argument for \u201cAmerica\u201d as a larger, hemispheric identity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHe is trying to reframe America as this continent-spanning container,\u201d said Reanna Cruz, music critic and senior producer for Vox Media\u2019s music podcast Switched on Pop. \u201cThe main takeaway I have from the performance is the highlight of community. \u2026 If we have nothing else in times of hardship, we have community and we have joy, and a way to access that is to not shut out your fellow humans in whatever country it may be. The reframing of America as something that spans half the globe is really radical.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">There&#8217;s a long history of that idea. \u201cEveryone from Rub\u00e9n L\u00e1rez to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/df8fd30c946e95d800474787f95af9a1\">Los Tigres del Norte<\/a> have created songs that have used this idea of all of the Americas coming together \u2026 of America being a kind of a cohesive unit,\u201d said Rivera-Rideau. \u201cBut I think what it really boils down to is a statement that Latinos, Latin Americans, Caribbean people, immigrants, they belong and they\u2019re just as American as anybody else.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHe\u2019s presenting a very capacious definition of what it is to be American,\u201d said Christopher Campo-Bowen, assistant professor of musicology at Virginia Tech. \u201cAnd within that, the idea of Puerto Rican sovereignty.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cHe is presenting everything that he finds that makes Puerto Rico unique. And what makes Puerto Rico an autonomy culture and actor in the hemisphere \u2014 and presenting it all at once \u2014 and then also broadcasting this unifying message of \u2018We are all Americans,&#8217;\u201d he added. \u201cHe\u2019s encouraging us all to recognize that uniqueness but not to let that difference become a source of enmity or hatred.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">American identity for Puerto Ricans<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/puerto-rico\">Puerto Ricans<\/a> are Americans in both ways Bad Bunny\u2019s show explored \u2014 they are U.S. citizens, and the island nation is situated in the Americas. But it is complicated: Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens no matter where they are born and have been since 1917. But Puerto Ricans who live on the island have limited citizenship rights; they cannot vote for President, they have no representation in Congress and they can be drafted into the military.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cWhat it boils down to is that Puerto Rico is a territory,\u201d said Rivera-Rideau, an idea she says Bad Bunny explored when he waved the Puerto Rican flag with a light blue triangle, a color repeated on <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/lady-gaga\">Lady Gaga&#8217;s<\/a> dress.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cThat\u2019s considered the original Puerto Rican flag. And once the U.S. takes over Puerto Rico in 1898, they change the color blue to match the U.S. flag. And so that light blue color on the Puerto Rican flag has become affiliated with Puerto Rican independence,\u201d she explained. \u201cSo, I think we saw him commenting on this colonial relationship at the same time that he\u2019s insisting on full recognition in the United States as a Latino, as an American, in the continental sense. Both things are happening in that halftime show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">That is also reflected in the music of Puerto Rico, and of course, Bad Bunny. Think of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/rauw-alejandro-interview-cosa-nuestra-puerto-rico-602c9804346dfd487b13d81dac330977\">the genre salsa<\/a> as an example, which \u201crepresents the kind of unique status of Puerto Rico vis-a-vis the mainland United States, in that salsa would not have been possible without this relationship,\u201d said Campo-Bowen. He noted that in the late 1940s and early &#8217;50s, Puerto Ricans migrated to New York in large numbers because of massive changes on the island. &#8220;They start communities there, encounter other people from Latin America, and then salsa comes about out of that mixture.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt is based in the long history of colonialism and that carries those issues with it. But despite that, Puerto Rico has developed this unique culture with these unique musical signifiers which Bad Bunny is more than happy to draw on and celebrate.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">A political message<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">Bad Bunny&#8217;s \u201cGod Bless America\u201d contrasts certain conservative messaging of American identity. Consider the fact that there was an alternative halftime performance, organized by Turning Point USA and headlined by <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/hub\/kid-rock\">Kid Rock,<\/a> called the \u201call-American Halftime show.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cBad Bunny turns this upside down and he says, \u2018No, \u2018God bless America\u2019 and \u2018America\u2019 is all of these Latin American and Caribbean nations and the U.S. and Canada. We&#8217;re all a part of it,\u201d said Vanessa D\u00edaz, associate professor of Chicano and Latino studies at Loyola Marymount University and co-author of \u201cP FKN R.\u201d <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt was about unity, but it was also about staking Latinos&#8217; claim in this country,\u201d she said, particularly in a charged political moment as Trump\u2019s immigration policies and executive actions have vastly expanded who is <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-immigration-ice-raids-school-2d899678264f44fe1021847ee385fd15\">eligible for deportation<\/a>, routine hearings have turned into <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-courts-deportations-trump-administration-8b9fab5475c0da4c0f13f3381de91448\">deportation traps for migrants<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/immigration-migrants-detention-trump-deportations-c8bfb50adac8fe9554f4d5aeefbe30cf\">detentions are prolonged<\/a> and opposition for the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/minneapolis-renee-good-immigration-sweeps-6ae64be5a0d6a718b658a938fb56e567\">Trump administration\u2019s immigration crackdown<\/a> grows.<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">In her view, Bad Bunny&#8217;s performance was \u201cprofoundly political\u201d \u2014 just as it was when he said \u201cICE Out\u201d at the 2026 Grammys \u2014 but on this stage, for its message of joy and unity. <\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cIt was wildly imaginative and extremely educational. And yet we had fun and we danced and we cried,\u201d D\u00edaz said of the performance. \u201cIt was Bad Bunny at his best, being super specific about his homeland and its history and also welcoming people in to let themselves see themselves reflected in Puerto Rican culture and history.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"dist__Box-sc-1fnzlkn-0 dist__TextBase-sc-1fnzlkn-3 bYFsJw cuqaEv article-text\">\u201cJoy is resistance and dancing is resistance,\u201d Cruz said. \u201cFor people in the Latino community, the show is very clear in how political it is.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>Copyright 2026 The Associated Press.
