In theaters Feb. 13.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Teachers won\u2019t be playing this movie in English Lit class anytime soon.<\/p>\n<p>Not unless their kink is angry emails.<\/p>\n<p>For one, Emerald Fennell\u2019s R-rated \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d has a healthy amount of sex scenes \u2014 far more, anyway, than the novel\u2019s zero.<\/p>\n<p>And that\u2019s not the only bold departure from the Victorian-Era source material.<\/p>\n<p>If high-school students were to watch the film starring Margot Robbie and Jacob Elordi to study for final exams, they\u2019d have to repeat sophomore year. Fennell\u2019s telling deviates from Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s 1847 book with abandon.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter\">\n<div class=\"inline-module inline-module--more inline-module--columnist inline-module--more--thirds\">\n<div class=\"inline-module__inner\">\n<h2 class=\"inline-module__heading subsection-heading subsection-heading--single-line \">\n\t\t\tMore From\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"subsection-heading__sub\">Johnny Oleksinski<\/span><br \/>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/h2>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/aside>\n<p>Plotlines get changed or chopped, the cast of characters has been streamlined to less than 10, the costumes are as period-accurate to the nineteenth century as a Honda Accord and there is a song by Charli XCX.<\/p>\n<p>You know what? That\u2019s great. Have at it. \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d is 179 years old and much too complicated a story \u2014 both psychologically and structurally \u2014 to faithfully adapt onscreen into anything resembling a good time.<\/p>\n<p>And, as far as pairing a literary classic with this director\u2019s idiosyncratic style, nobody goes to a movie by Fennell, the devilish mind behind \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2023\/11\/17\/entertainment\/saltburn-review-a-sexy-mysterious-shocking-thriller\/\">Saltburn<\/a>\u201d and \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2020\/12\/18\/promising-young-woman-review-a-howl-of-rage-at-sexual-predators\/\">Promising Young Woman<\/a>,\u201d for a stuffy BBC miniseries from the late \u201880s.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jacob Elordi and Margot Robbie smolder in \u201cWuthering Heights.\u201d <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Warner Bros\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This is a sexy, funny, ravishing and dark revision that keeps Heathcliff\u2019s frightening obsessiveness, emotional toxicity and sadism intact while\u00a0ably\u00a0contorting the tale into a decadent, modern, yet still distinctly gothic, romance.<\/p>\n<p>And much more so than in her previous two movies, which were clever puzzles, Fennell makes the viewer care about her star-crossed leads, a lot actually, even when the\u00a0duo\u00a0behave like\u00a0monsters.<\/p>\n<p>They first meet as children, when a quiet orphan boy is taken in by the owner (Martin Clunes) of a chilly estate in north of England \u2014 Wuthering Heights. The man\u2019s daughter, bossy, chatty Cathy (Charlotte Mellington), names her shy new plaything Heathcliff, after her dead brother.<\/p>\n<p>By happenstance, Fennell cast 16-year-old Owen Cooper, the breakout star of Netflix\u2019s \u201cAdolescence,\u201d as the young buck before his TV show exploded and he replaced his soccer trophies with an Emmy and a Golden Globe. Cooper proves himself\u00a0a\u00a0rising\u00a0star once again,\u00a0as\u00a0every word is spoken with the conviction and passion of an actor far beyond his years.<\/p>\n<p>When\u00a0he so\u00a0intensely\u00a0tells\u00a0Mellington\u2019s\u00a0Cathy, \u201cI will never go away. I will never leave you. No matter what you do,\u201d it\u2019s chilling as the misty moors of Yorkshire.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Robbie plays Cathy, who\u2019s infatuated with Heathcliff from childhood. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In adulthood, the two are inseparable but tempestuous. Cathy (Robbie) is unmarried and has a tomboy streak. Wearing a long dress, she casually trots right through the blood of a recently butchered pig. And Elordi\u2019s long-haired, scruffy Heathcliff is so dirty you can smell him through the screen.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s also unpleasant\u00a0to be around\u00a0\u2014 \u201crough, wild and wicked temper,\u201d as Cathy puts it. Yet his\u00a0norms-be-damned\u00a0rogueness only feeds her infatuation.<\/p>\n<p>When, manipulated by\u00a0downcast\u00a0housekeeper Nelly\u00a0(Hong Chau), Cathy decides to wed a wealthy, kindhearted neighbor named Edgar, Heathcliff flees\u00a0in a fury for five years, only to return rich, spiffed-up and ready to torment her some more.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Heathcliff (Elordi) stars in Cathy\u2019s life even after she marries Edgar Linton. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>For anybody worried that Elordi and Robbie wouldn\u2019t spark, well, they positively self\u2013combust. When newly madeover Heathcliff\u00a0came back\u00a0to Wuthering Heights through a cloud of dense fog, the woman next to me gasped like she\u2019d just received a marriage proposal.<\/p>\n<p>Heathcliff and Cathy brood and fight and whine and drag everybody else through mud. And by some miracle we still like them.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s because both Robbie and Elordi find\u00a0unexpected\u00a0charm in\u00a0all the\u00a0cruel manipulation and\u00a0borderline\u00a0barbarity.\u00a0When Scary Met Nasty.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Elordi and Robbie find the charm in cruelty. <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9Warner Bros\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The most recognizably Fennelly touches\u00a0are in Edgar Linton\u2019s\u00a0luxe\u00a0manse, the color-popping opposite of dank and dreary Wuthering Heights.\u00a0There are long halls with\u00a0sultry\u00a0red floors, a fireplace of plaster hands and a topiary garden out of \u201cAlice in Wonderland.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bright as his home is\u00a0Shazad Latif\u2019s\u00a0sweet and vanilla\u00a0Edgar.\u00a0He\u2019s perfect, but the safe choice.\u00a0So Cathy\u2019s\u00a0mean\u00a0disregard for her husband\u00a0as Heathcliff thrusts himself back into her life is both horrific and\u00a0gets the go-ahead from the audience.<\/p>\n<p>And humor is introduced by\u00a0the superb\u00a0Alison Oliver as Edgar\u2019s\u00a0weird\u00a0ward Isabella. Her creepy, nosy doll collector with a giggly crush on Heathcliff\u00a0is a scream.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Alison Oliver is a scream as Isabella. <span class=\"credit\">AP<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, as Fennell does so well, the comedy is misdirection.\u00a0Soon enough, the\u00a0movie turns disturbing and ultimately heartbreaking.<\/p>\n<p>Traditionalists will moan that Fennell has turned Bront\u00eb\u2019s book into a sweeping romance. And, yes,\u00a0she has.
