This story was <strong>originally posted on Feb. 27, 2025<\/strong>.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Jorell A. Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo promised his wife, child and therapist he\u2019d leave his laptop at home.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">But when Bad Bunny\u2019s team DMed him on Christmas Eve while Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo was on vacation in Europe, he had to take the call. The singer\u2019s team wanted this University of Wisconsin-Madison historian and professor of Latin American and Caribbean history to contribute historical narratives to pair with his new album, \u201cDeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS\u201d (translated to \u201cI should have taken more pictures\u201d).<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo wrote \u201cPuerto Rico: A National History,\u201d published by Princeton University Press in 2024.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cPart of (Benito\u2019s) thinking was that Puerto Rican history is unknown,\u201d Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo said.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Benito Antonio Mart\u00ednez Ocasio, known by his stage name Bad Bunny, is one of the most popular musicians in the world. The three-time Grammy award-winning artist was born and raised in Puerto Rico, and his music has helped make Spanish-language rap mainstream. His 2022 album, \u201cUn Verano Sin Ti,\u201d\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/album\/3RQQmkQEvNCY4prGKE6oc5\">is the most streamed album on Spotify<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Back in Europe without his computer, Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo got to writing, recounting and synthesizing critical historical moments in Puerto Rican history. His lyrics speak directly to the people of Puerto Rico while weaving together sonic influences from Afro-Caribbean styles like bomba and plena.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo added even more context to the album. His handwritten notes would become the basis for the visualizers paired with each of the album\u2019s 17 songs, essentially slide decks highlighting important moments or themes in Puerto Rican history.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bad Bunny has called attention to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thecut.com\/article\/bad-bunny-new-album-debi-tirar-mas-fotos-interview.html#:~:text=In%20school%2C%20he,don%E2%80%99t%20teach%20us%2C%E2%80%9D\">how little Puerto Rican history is taught in schools<\/a>. Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo said that\u2019s because Puerto Rico has been \u201ca colonial possession since 1493.\u201d Colonialism, he said, necessitates the erasure of history \u2014\u00a0and not knowing history means it\u2019s harder to change the current reality.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Bad Bunny\u2019s album, said Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo, speaks to \u201ccultural, national affirmation in the face of displacement and the erasure of our culture.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo took The Cap Times through three songs from the new album and how the visualizers he created speak to the lyrics and tone of the songs they were paired with.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Track #1: \u201cNUEVAYoL\u201d and the history of the Puerto Rican flag<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-video  subscriber-hide tnt-inline-asset tnt-inline-relcontent tnt-inline-video tnt-inline-relation-child tnt-inline-presentation-default tnt-inline-alignment-default tnt-inline-width-default\">\n<p>\n            <iframe id=\"youtube-player-58f89b5c-f46c-11ef-a509-efd9e56e84a0\" class=\"youtube\" style=\"min-height:250px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/zAfrPjTvSNs?enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/captimes.com\" data-uuid=\"58f89b5c-f46c-11ef-a509-efd9e56e84a0\" data-title=\"BAD BUNNY - NUEVAYoL (Visualizer) | DeB&#xCD; TiRAR M&#xE1;S FOToS\" data-visible=\"false\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cDeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS\u201d starts in New York City, home to the largest Puerto Rican population outside the island. It opens with a sample from \u201cUn Verano en Nueva York\u201d released in 1975 by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cIt recognizes the importance of diaspora, not only historically, but also sonically,\u201d Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo said, pulling musical influence from \u201cold school salsa with dembow, which is a very Dominican sound.\u201d The song is nostalgic and evokes a longing to hold onto cultural identity away from home.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">With his historical narrative,\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=zAfrPjTvSNs&amp;list=PLRW7iEDD9RDT_19SQk3uKFkJUCA_uGr7Y&amp;index=2\">which has been viewed on YouTube more than 40 million times<\/a>, Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo said he \u201cwanted to highlight the solidarity among Caribbean peoples\u201d by telling the story of the current Puerto Rican flag, the bandera Puertorrique\u00f1a. The bandera was unveiled in 1895 in New York alongside exiled members of the Cuban Revolutionary Party and represents \u201ca revolutionary aspiration towards independence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Initially, the flag, with a blue equilateral triangle and five stripes alternating between red and white, used light blue. In 1952, when it was adopted as the official flag of Puerto Rico, Governor Luis Mu\u00f1oz Mar\u00edn changed it to a darker blue to match the U.S. flag.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The flag with light blue, said Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo, was outlawed for a time and still remains a symbol of resistance and pro-independence. This is the flag that shows up in Bad Bunny\u2019s video for Track 10, \u201c<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=7f6SxWMOpdU\">EL CL\u00faB<\/a>.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Track #14: \u201cLO QUE LE PAS\u00d3 A HAWAii\u201d and endangered species<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-video  subscriber-hide tnt-inline-asset tnt-inline-relcontent tnt-inline-video tnt-inline-relation-child tnt-inline-presentation-default tnt-inline-alignment-default tnt-inline-width-default\">\n<p>\n            <iframe id=\"youtube-player-297850ca-f46c-11ef-861b-eb76fcf6d74e\" class=\"youtube\" style=\"min-height:250px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/uvfDaZ4ZT80?enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/captimes.com\" data-uuid=\"297850ca-f46c-11ef-861b-eb76fcf6d74e\" data-title=\"BAD BUNNY - LO QUE LE PAS&#xD3; A HAWAii (Visualizer) | DeB&#xCD; TiRAR M&#xE1;S FOToS\" data-visible=\"false\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">This song, which translates to \u201cwhat happened to Hawaii,\u201d is a song about \u201cdisplacement,\u201d \u201ccultural erasure\u201d and \u201cextraction.\u201d Bad Bunny sings a somber, sparse song, allowing instruments like the guitar and the g\u00fciro \u2014 a hollow Puerto Rican percussion instrument with notches, played with a stick \u2014 to stand out.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">The song warns against further colonization and gentrification: \u201cQuieren quitarme el r\u00edo y tambi\u00e9n la playa \/ Quieren el barrio m\u00edo y que abuelita se vaya,\u201d he sings, which translates to \u201cThey want to take my river and my beach too \/ they want my neighborhood and to see my grandmother leave.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo helps connect this warning by talking about extinct and endangered animals, specifically the sapo concho, the only toad endemic to Puerto Rico. Along with climate change and habitat disruption, the sapo concho faced threats from another toad, introduced during the early days of American colonization, Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo writes.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">He said Bad Bunny was \u201cvery clear of how he was thinking about this analogy.\u201d Concho, an animated toad, appears throughout the album, including <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=gLSzEYVDads\">a short film directed by Bad Bunny<\/a> that tells the story of an older Puerto Rican resident reckoning with the horrors of gentrification and whitewashing of culture.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\"><strong>Track #17: \u201cLA MuDANZA\u201d and a generation in crisis<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-asset inline-video  subscriber-hide tnt-inline-asset tnt-inline-relcontent tnt-inline-video tnt-inline-relation-child tnt-inline-presentation-default tnt-inline-alignment-default tnt-inline-width-default\">\n<p>\n            <iframe id=\"youtube-player-756c08f0-f46c-11ef-a169-3f024368850f\" class=\"youtube\" style=\"min-height:250px\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube-nocookie.com\/embed\/lqX1S9mFHbU?enablejsapi=1&amp;origin=https:\/\/captimes.com\" data-uuid=\"756c08f0-f46c-11ef-a169-3f024368850f\" data-title=\"BAD BUNNY - LA MuDANZA (Visualizer) | DeB&#xCD; TiRAR M&#xE1;S FOToS\" data-visible=\"false\" allowfullscreen=\"\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo thinks this song is a fitting way to end the album. Bad Bunny uses classic salsa rhythms to contextualize himself within Puerto Rico\u2019s history. Before the music starts, he recounts his parents\u2019 histories and how they met. Throughout the song, he asserts his presence and connection to the island.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo used this visualizer (the YouTube slideshow that accompanies the song) to discuss the issues facing Bad Bunny\u2019s generation.<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cEver since 2006 in Puerto Rico, we have been undergoing a series of fiscal, social and political crises that &#8230; (have) marked a generation,\u201d said Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo. \u201cThe only thing that they know and they\u2019ve lived through is crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Young people have seen fiscal collapse spurred by the repeal of Section 936, a provision that made the island a tax haven for companies, in 2006. They\u2019ve endured\u00a0<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/dailynous.com\/2025\/01\/29\/moratorium-on-philosophy-other-programs-at-the-university-of-puerto-rico\/\">mass school closures<\/a>, the impact of Hurricane Maria in 2017, and lack of access to basics like electricity and water.\u00a0 (During this conversation, Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo said his grandmother, who lives in Aguadilla in the western part of Puerto Rico, hasn\u2019t had access to water for three days).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo cites these as reasons for why young people have left. Yet \u201cLA MuDANZA\u201d is about defiance and the reclamation of an identity and space that has always belonged to Puerto Ricans.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p dir=\"ltr\">\u201cNo one\u2019s taking me from here. This is the land that my grandfather was born in,\u201d Mel\u00e9ndez-Badillo said, roughly translating some of the song\u2019s last lines.
