Still, he came by those honestly. \u201cI\u2019ve had my nose broken seven times and my front teeth both knocked out seven times,\u201d says the Baltimore musician, who has been slowly fixing his body after a lifetime of moshing (and a stint of powerlifting). \u201cI would say so much of my musical identity is in spite of fakeness [or] phoning it in.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/angel-dut\/\" id=\"auto-tag_angel-dut\" data-tag=\"angel-dut\">Angel Du$t<\/a>, the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/hardcore\/\" id=\"auto-tag_hardcore\" data-tag=\"hardcore\">hardcore<\/a> band that he fronts, are dropping their sixth studio album,<em> Cold 2 the Touch<\/em>, on Feb. 13 \u2014 a tight, loud, rampage of a record that harks back to the band\u2019s harder days without abandoning any of the eccentricities that make Angel Du$t sound distinctly <em>them<\/em>. \u201cThe epitome of art is authenticity,\u201d Tripp says. \u201cAnd that\u2019s the goal for this record: not adhere to expectations. It wasn\u2019t intentional to make it sound like all these eras of our life, but that\u2019s what you get.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tAngel Du$t was born out of the same primordial stew as their Grammy-winning friends <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/turnstile-never-enough-grammy-nominations-interview-1235480765\/\">Turnstile<\/a>. Tripp was the singer in another hardcore band, Trapped Under Ice, where <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/turnstile\/\" id=\"auto-tag_turnstile\" data-tag=\"turnstile\">Turnstile<\/a> singer Brandon Yates played drums; he formed his current project in 2013, initially with Turnstile drummer Daniel Fang. Since then, Tripp has been the only constant in the lineup, which now features guitarists Steve Marino and Jim Caroll, bassist Zechariah Ghostribe, and drummer Nick Lewis. Since jump, though, Tripp hasn\u2019t been afraid to push the boundaries of what hardcore could sound like.<\/p>\n<div class=\"post-content-image \/\/  \">\n<figure class=\"o-figure   size-large alignnone lrv-u-max-width-100p\" style=\"width:1024px\">\n<div class=\"c-lazy-image  lrv-u-border-a-2\">\n<div class=\"lrv-a-crop-16x9\" style=\"padding-bottom:calc((819\/1024)*100%);\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/p><\/div><\/div><figcaption class=\"c-figcaption  lrv-u-flex lrv-u-flex-direction-column lrv-u-align-items-center\">\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<span class=\"u-border-color-black u-border-lr-2 lrv-u-padding-tb-025 lrv-u-padding-lr-075 lrv-u-border-b-2 lrv-u-width-100p lrv-u-text-align-center a-font-basic-secondary-s\">Angel Du$t in 2026: Justice Tripp, Nick Lewis, Zechariah Ghosttribe, Steve Marino, Jim Carroll (from left)<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<cite class=\"lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase lrv-a-font-body-xs lrv-u-margin-t-050 lrv-u-text-align-center\">Jack Trapper*<\/cite><\/p>\n<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\t\u201cAngel Du$t, to me, is the first modern band that truly implemented melody into hardcore, and it was at a moment where it was definitely not in vogue to do so,\u201d says Ian Shelton of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/militarie-gun-new-album-interview-god-save-the-gun-1235401688\/\">Militarie Gun<\/a>, another friend and frequent collaborator. \u201cThey\u2019re the band that is actually taking the criticism to push the genre of <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/t\/punk\/\" id=\"auto-tag_punk\" data-tag=\"punk\">punk<\/a> music, of hardcore, whatever you want to call it, into different, scarier places creatively \u2014 because it\u2019s from a place of authenticity, of experimentation, of exploring what seems interesting to Justice.\u201d<\/p>\n<section class=\"brands-most-popular \/\/ editors-pick-module lrv-u-margin-tb-2 lrv-u-border-a-2 u-box-shadow-5-5 lrv-u-padding-lr-1 a-span1 u-padding-b-1@tablet u-overflow-hidden\">\n<h2 id=\"section-heading\" class=\"c-heading larva  lrv-u-text-align-center u-border-color-black a-font-theme-primary-xxs lrv-u-color-black lrv-u-text-transform-uppercase u-letter-spacing-0063 lrv-u-padding-t-050 u-padding-b-0375@tablet lrv-u-padding-b-050@mobile-max lrv-u-border-b-2\">\n<p>\t\tEditor\u2019s picks<\/p>\n<\/h2>\n<\/section>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tWhat\u2019s interesting to Justice this time around, then, is rock &amp; roll, or at least the energy that it represents. \u201cThe current state of rock &amp; roll music is hardcore,\u201d he says. \u201cYou go to the hardcore show and you\u2019re getting the most stripped-down, raw, organic version of rock &amp; roll music. And for me, I\u2019d like to keep that as pure as possible.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tThat\u2019s immediately apparent in album opener \u201cPain Is a Must,\u201d a teeth-kicker featuring vocals by Terror\u2019s Scott Vogel. \u201cIt\u2019s about suffering for what you love to do. That\u2019s what my life has been,\u201d says Tripp, who gave up a steady job doing HVAC and plumbing because<strong> <\/strong>he\u2019d be miserable<strong> <\/strong>if faced with a life of fixing leaks at 4 a.m. \u201cI\u2019ve given myself to music, and it ended up working out, and I\u2019m very grateful. But there was never an expectation of it working out. There\u2019s no, \u2018We\u2019re gonna get this person because they have the most followers on the internet.\u2019 I\u2019ve seen that angle working in music. But the value is exclusively great artists who have already given this band so much. We\u2019re imitating this thing.\u2019 But I guess I\u2019m way past the point of my life of wanting to rehash or relive something that somebody else did,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve had bands come to me and say, \u2018Hey, we really like Angel Du$t and that\u2019s what we\u2019re trying to do.\u2019 It\u2019s like, \u2018Don\u2019t do that.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tSure, Tripp has his own influences, but he\u2019s less about aping than inspiration. \u201cPrince is probably the most influential thing on everything I do musically,\u201d he says. \u201cNobody\u2019s ever gonna listen to what I do and say, \u2018Oh, man, this guy loves Prince.\u2019 I don\u2019t want to imitate Prince. I want to take something from his energy and make it my own thing.\u201d It makes sense, then, that he was voted \u201cMost Likely to Trip Across Stage\u201d in high school. It makes me sick. And I\u2019m not a music snob. You can make terrible music if it\u2019s genuine.\u201d For example, he loves to bait music snobs by asking if they like Sublime. \u201cYou\u2019ll get people that are immediately like, \u2018No, I hate that.\u2019 And it\u2019s because it doesn\u2019t match their identity,\u201d he says. \u201cImmediately, when you have that response, I know who you are. You\u2019re a person who created a character, and you have to go express that to everybody and make sure everybody knows your character doesn\u2019t align with Sublime.\u201d (Note: He does like Sublime.)<\/p>\n<p class=\"paragraph larva \/\/ lrv-u-line-height-copy  lrv-a-font-body-l   \">\n\tPatrick Kindlon of Drug Church and Self Defense Family is similarly averse to posturing, and he\u00a0 admires this band\u2019s dedication to their own vibe. \u201cEverybody in music who already doesn\u2019t like you is waiting for you to make a record that validates their opinion of you to everybody else,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd Angel Du$t doesn\u2019t do that, because even if you don\u2019t like one record as much as the previous one, it never feels like an embarrassing effort. They don\u2019t bite off more than they can chew. They just chew different food for an album. I know I do things that aren\u2019t healthy, and I have habits where I\u2019m not always the most pleasant person. But it\u2019s what I got.
