photo by Brian Escobar, EDCKC<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 18pt;\"><b>Housing investments target affordability and stability<\/b><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If public safety reflects the city\u2019s immediate concerns, housing represents its long-term stability, Lucas said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mayor described housing as one of the most transformative areas of city investment in recent years, with funding set aside for homelessness prevention, legal support for tenants facing eviction, and 10,000 new affordable housing units coming to Kansas City.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cNew buildings are great, but we will have no greater legacy from our tenure than the tens of thousands of Kansas Citians we will launch into better, safer, and more stable housing,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since its debut, <\/span><a target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kcmo.gov\/city-hall\/housing\/tenant-resources\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the city\u2019s right to counsel program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> has helped thousands of residents avoid eviction. At the same time, he urged the State Board of Police Commissioners to follow through on its end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOur hope is that the State Board of Police Commissioners will fulfill their pledge to hire 50 additional law enforcement officers and 20 new call takers and dispatchers and deliver on officer pay increases with a proposed $363 million budget,\u201d said Lucas.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He also emphasized the need for the police board to confront rising legal costs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe current trajectory in litigation costs is unsustainable for the police department\u2019s budget,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The mayor pointed to recent downward crime trends as signs of progress, highlighting declines in homicides, non-fatal shootings, and robberies over the past year. As a parent, he added, he supports steps that make streets safer for children and pedestrians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Meanwhile, the KC Streetcar\u2019s south extension to UMKC and the Country Club Plaza is now up and running, with a riverfront extension expected before the World Cup.
