At the first leg in Auckland, performing within walking distance of Grey Lynn, the neighbourhood where she grew up, BENEE <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/laneway-auckland-live-review-90722\/\" target=\"_blank\">revelled in the moment<\/a>, even finding time to <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-news\/benee-role-model-sally-laneway-auckland-90706\/\" target=\"_blank\">play the part of Sally<\/a> during Role Model\u2019s set.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of her final two Laneway sideshows in Torquay and Melbourne this weekend (ticket information <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.handsometours.com\/tours\/benee\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">here<\/a>), read our wide-ranging interview with the Kiwi pop superstar below, touching on her latest album, what she\u2019s learned from working with some of the biggest pop artists on the planet, her thoughts on New Zealand music, and much more.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Rolling Stone AU\/NZ: Was it daunting having such a gap between your debut and second album?<\/strong><\/p>\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form justify-content-center my-3 p-0 d-flex align-items-stretch bg-dark text-white\">\n<div class=\"observer-sub-form-info p-3\" style=\"justify-content: start;\">\n<h2 class=\"h5 mb-0 observer-title\">Love Music?<\/h2>\n<p class=\"observer-desc mb-2\"> Get your daily dose of everything happening in Australian\/New Zealand music and globally.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"spinner d-none\"> <\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>BENEE: Yeah, somewhat for sure. I\u2019ve definitely been nervous to release [it], but I kind of got to the point where I\u2019m like, \u201cI might as well just hold it off and come back with a bang.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve spoken with other artists who took their time between albums, a long time, and they said it really helped them in the end because it felt like there was less pressure on them.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I agree.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I think that that\u2019s definitely how I feel. I did this session with this producer called Buddy Ross and we were talking about it because I was stressed at the time about how long it was taking me.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>And he was like, \u201cthe Frank Ocean <em>Blonde<\/em> album took years.\u201d Like, they weren\u2019t rushing that, you know, [Ocean was] basically very simply saying good things take time, but I think I needed to hear that because in this music climate I feel like everything is so quick\u2026 How people consume [music] is like a snippet on TikTok\u2026 so it\u2019s definitely stressful, but I think there\u2019s definitely peace [in] just waiting it out and making the art really, really good.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\"><iframe title=\"Spotify Embed: Ur an Angel I\u2019m Just Particles\" style=\"border-radius: 12px\" width=\"400\" height=\"352\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"\" allow=\"autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; fullscreen; picture-in-picture\" loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/open.spotify.com\/embed\/album\/6rcYUB0G3fFJrRQSmIHO93?si=1cfy4w60Tduc_S2Sh3bhbQ&amp;utm_source=oembed\"><\/iframe><\/figure>\n<p><strong>I think especially in the world that you occupy, pop and alt-pop, there\u2019s so much pressure. Do you ever feel stressed watching your contemporaries?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>it\u2019s a weird kind of game where if you don\u2019t release, you\u2019re like, \u201cAm I still relevant?\u201d It\u2019s so toxic, the industry and how even audiences like what\u2019s hot, you know, or what\u2019s new or whatever\u2026 It\u2019s pretty weird to navigate, but it\u2019s also been pretty inspiring seeing what my peers are releasing and coming up with creatively.<\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019ve had kind of like a pop boot camp, touring with Olivia Rodrigo and Tate McRae, working with Lily Allen. That\u2019s like going to university for pop! How have they helped you?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I\u2019ve graduated! [I\u2019ve] enjoyed it\u2026 Olivia and Tate were both insane to tour with. I think just playing arenas of those sizes [was] just so inspiring because I\u2019m like, \u201cOh my gosh, I want to play an arena.\u201d We\u2019ve only sold out the [Auckland venue] Spark Arena, but that one was that one was big \u2014 [in] New Zealand that\u2019s like the pinnacle\u2026 But yeah, arenas are just such a crazy amount of people, you know, and when they all know the songs, it\u2019s really, really awesome.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did you have people singing back the songs to you when you were supporting?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, yeah\u2026 It was pretty cool\u2026 There were some countries that I\u2019d never been to, and people were singing a few of the songs, so I was like, \u201cI hear you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>I did want to go back to Lily Allen because honestly a few songs on this album sounded a lot like her.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Wow, I mean I grew up listening to her.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> I love the sound Lily, her production and songs like \u201cSmile\u201d and \u201cFuck You\u201d. <\/span>That\u2019s very flattering because I love her.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"instagram-media\" style=\"background: #FFF; border: 0; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: 0 0 1px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.5),0 1px 10px 0 rgba(0,0,0,0.15); margin: 1px; max-width: 540px; min-width: 326px; padding: 0; width: calc(100% - 2px);\" data-instgrm-captioned=\"\" data-instgrm-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/reel\/DUXUMnEEoLP\/?utm_source=ig_embed&amp;utm_campaign=loading\" data-instgrm-version=\"14\"\/>\n<p><strong>The last two songs, \u201cPrincess\u201d and \u201cHeaven\u201d, the position of those is just so delicate, so perfect. Was that something you wanted to do \u2014 you just didn\u2019t want to go at one speed on this album?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think that, in previous EPs and albums, it definitely has been something that I\u2019m super comfortable with, just having it [being] very eclectic.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>However, I feel in this album I definitely wanted to make it a little more cohesive, I think with the sound.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Did I also detect a little bit of UK garage in a few songs?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love UK music and grime and, yeah, I\u2019m definitely inspired by that kind of music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I listened to a lot of the Gorillaz, it\u2019s not grime but I love their music \u2014 how they produce their songs is just so refreshing.<\/p>\n<p>I don\u2019t know, it\u2019s just [that] there\u2019s so many cool artists out there, and I think that as an artist, you\u2019re kind of like a sponge\u2026 You just absorb everything around you and spit [it] out.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>So last year you did a <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/au.rollingstone.com\/music\/music-features\/benee-bic-runga-musicians-on-musicians-69635\/\" rel=\"noopener\" target=\"_blank\">Rolling Stone Musicians of Musicians interview with Bic Runga<\/a>.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>How was that?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>It actually doesn\u2019t feel like that long ago, and I think I was sitting in the same spot, but that was \u2014 I mean, Bic is an icon, and it\u2019s so cool to talk to an artist who has been doing it longer than you because there\u2019s just so much knowledge and you can just connect on such a deep level knowing what each other have gone through in the industry.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>So it was really cool to talk to her, and she\u2019s obviously a New Zealand icon.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure class=\"op-interactive\">\n<div class=\"jeg_video_container jeg_video_content\"><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"BENEE - Princess (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/i6MXm9RE7lQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/div>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong><span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">I<\/span>f we got you to do Musicians on Musicians again, who would be your dream Kiwi artist to be paired with?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Let me think, let me think.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>Can I say UMO [Unknown Mortal Orchestra]?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Of course!<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I love Unknown Mortal Orchestra.\u00a0I would love to talk to them because I just love their music. It\u2019s so good.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>We\u2019ll see what we can do\u2026 Talking about missing New Zealand, what do you think makes our music scene so unique? Is it the isolation over here?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I think it\u2019s the isolation because I hear a lot of people saying that while I\u2019m over here [the US], that New Zealand music is so unique, you know, or has its own sound, or that there are so many great artists that come out of New Zealand, and then I\u2019m thinking, \u201cHmm, what other places have that?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You have a place like Sweden also [with] so many good artists, or like Iceland, so I do think it has something to do with the isolation and being so far removed from everything that you kind of create a sound that sounds like isolation.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>I mean, specifically in Aotearoa we have so many incredible artists\u2026 starting Olive [Records] was really fun because it gave people a platform and also allowed me to just work closely with a bunch of artists that I love.<\/p>\n<p><strong>I did want to ask about Olive Records. It\u2019s extended to Aussies as well, which is really nice. Yeah, it\u2019s interesting how that happens when you\u2019re overseas, but there\u2019s something so nice [about] hanging out with a bunch of New Zealanders\u2026 I actually have a house full of New Zealanders right now.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>I have a couple upstairs who are from New Zealand, and I mean my friend Johann, who I moved here with, he\u2019s also from New Zealand\u2026 So we\u2019re always around New Zealanders.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019s kind of funny [how we] gravitate to each other\u2026 I want all my girlfriends to come over here.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>You\u2019re about to do the opposite route \u2014 you\u2019re coming back for Laneway. Did you go to Laneway when you were growing up?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>I did.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\"> It <\/span>is definitely one of my favourite festivals ever, so I am beyond excited to be playing that again, and I just can\u2019t wait. It\u2019s just been so long since I\u2019ve played any shows [in] the southern hemisphere.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Do you get back home much?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Not as much as I would like to\u2026 I was there at the start of the year [2025] because I did a song for <em>Minecraft<\/em>, and they were filming it and producing it there. So I got to come back for work, which was really great, and I\u2019m gonna come back for Christmas this year [2025].<\/p>\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve got to ask: are you going to do a New Zealand tour for this album?<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Yeah, definitely.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span>It\u2019d be so rude not to\u2026 I haven\u2019t announced it yet, but I am gonna be doing a big album tour, and of course New Zealand and Australia will be a part of that.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Beautiful.
