{"id":2280296,"date":"2026-02-13T11:12:08","date_gmt":"2026-02-13T11:12:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2280296"},"modified":"2026-02-13T11:12:08","modified_gmt":"2026-02-13T11:12:08","slug":"indigenous-ae-artist-book-illustrations-nominated-music-future-feature-films","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/indigenous-ae-artist-book-illustrations-nominated-music-future-feature-films\/","title":{"rendered":"INDIGENOUS A&#038;E: Artist book illustrations, nominated music, future feature films"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p><strong>Sandra Hale Schulman<\/strong><br \/><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ictnews.org\/\"><em>ICT<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>The latest: Children\u2019s book shines with art and teachings, musicians earn award nods, film screenings in Florida<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>ART: Ojibwe wisdom and a NYC museum show<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Nanibah \u201cNani\u201d Chacon, Din\u00e9 and Chicana, is having a big art moment with a new children\u2019s book she illustrated, and she will be among three Indigenous artists included in the prestigious Whitney Biennial opening in March in New York City.<\/p>\n<p>The book, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.com\/Aaniin-I-See-Your-Light\/dp\/0063088630\">Aaniin: I See Your Light,<\/a> by acclaimed Ojibwe author Dawn Quigley, uses the Ojibwe Seven Grandfather Teachings of love, respect, bravery, truth, honesty, humility and wisdom.<\/p>\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\">\n<figure class=\"alignleft size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">A new children\u2019s book, Aaniin: I See Your Light, by Ojibwe author Dawn Quigley, uses the Ojibwe Seven Grandfather Teachings of love, respect, bravery, truth, honesty, humility and wisdom to help recognize a child\u2019s inner goodness.The book is illustrated by artist Nanibah \u201cNani\u201d Chacon, Din\u00e9 and Chicana. <span class=\"image-credit\"><span class=\"credit-label-wrapper\">Credit:<\/span> Photo courtesy of Nanibah Chacon<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Aaniin (ah-NEEN) is an Ojibwe greeting for hello and can also be translated as \u201cI see your light.\u201d The story introduces universal values for recognizing a child\u2019s inner goodness.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-1    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>The book includes 15 of Chacon\u2019s lush illustrations, each a work of art in itself.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had the unique honor to illustrate a children\u2019s book,\u201d Chacon said. \u201cA lifelong dream\u2026 is a beautiful book centering the Ojibwe Seven Grandfather Teachings. \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a lot of hard work over two years,\u201d she said. \u201cI really appreciate the process that goes into making children\u2019s books now that I\u2019ve been a part of it because so much of my process is very analog \u2014 no digital tools used. All of them are hand-painted pages and all of the edits were hand-painted and sometimes completely redone.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The original paintings are about 20\u00d730 inches on board and may be shown alongside the book at signing events.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"scaip scaip-2    \">\n\t\t<\/aside>\n<p>Chacon is most recognized as a painter and muralist. Her most notable works include large-scale paintings, murals, and installations in the public arts sector. She focuses on sociopolitical issues affecting women and Indigenous people and her personal philosophy that art should be a meaningful catalyst for social change. The first three books in her \u201cJo Jo Makoons\u201d series, and her debut Young Adult novel, \u201cApple in the Middle,\u201d were awarded American Indian Youth Literature Honors. She is a university faculty member and a former teacher, as well as an Indian Education program co-director.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAaniin\u201d received a starred review in <em>Publisher\u2019s Weekly.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAn empowering read that both honors children\u2019s behavioral strengths and offers guidance on orienting around values,\u201d it said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>MUSIC: Native musician nominations<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Native musicians are catching some attention in this year\u2019s music awards.<\/p>\n<p>Award-winning powerhouse <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/crystalshawanda.co\">Crystal Shawanda<\/a> has a 2026 Juno Award nomination for Blues Album of the Year,\u00a0 \u201cSing Pretty Blues.\u201d The record takes listeners on a soulful journey and pays homage to the classic sounds of Stax, Chess, and Motown Records. Guild of Music Supervisors<\/a> award for Best Song Written and\/or Recorded for Television for \u201cNDN Kars\u201d (Dark Winds Version) from the Season 3 finale of \u201cDark Winds\u201d (<a It is one of several major accolades for the artist, who is also a seven-time Native American Music Award winner and Hall of Fame inductee.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He played a recent acoustic tribute to the late actor, Graham Greene, along with violinist Genevieve Gros-Louis, at the Native Reel Festival, which included the score from \u201cThunderheart\u201d and \u201cDances with Wolves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>His label also released <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=O1KNasBHt78\">a funny Frybread rant video<\/a> that finds Secola juggling frybread and riding a wild frybread puppet buffalo.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><strong>FILM: Upcoming films center buffalo in person and animal<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Last year, the Turtle Mountain Band of Chippewa <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.buffalosfire.com\/turtle-mountain-band-of-chippewa-gift-five-symbolic-white-buffalo-calves-to-neighboring-tribes\">gifted five white buffalo calves<\/a> to five tribes in North Dakota and Minnesota. Justin Deegan, an Arikara, Oglala and Hunkpapa filmmaker from the Fort Berthold Reservation, traveled to attend the ceremony in Belcourt, North Dakota, after a friend who lives on the reservation invited him to film it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Deegan said he was surprised \u201chow strong the community was up in Turtle Mountain in their spiritual ways. Everyone came out for that day, like so much support. And that was really amazing to witness.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Deegan recorded the day, talked to tribal representatives and community members, and then edited the film with a colleague.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people feel like this is a spiritual prophecy that\u2019s come to light,\u201d said Deegan. \u201cAnd it\u2019s happening in real time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The 15-minute film, \u201cWaabishki (White) Mashkode-bizhiki (Bison),\u201d premiered in Los Angeles at the Native film festival LA Skins Fest on Friday, Nov. 21.
