By a sliver, anyway.<\/p>\n<p>Before we get into the numbers, some important clarification:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>This crucial market-share stat, confirmed by<strong>\u00a0Spotify<\/strong> in its annual fiscal report, reveals the platform\u2019s yearly \u2018stream share\u2019 for all recorded music represented by <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Universal Music Group [4,466 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/\">Universal<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Sony [2,291 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/sony\/\">Sony<\/a>,<\/strong>\u00a0<strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Warner Music Group [3,494 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/access-industries\/warner-music-group\/\">Warner<\/a><\/strong> \u2013 including their \u2018indie\u2019 distribution arms \u2013 plus <strong>Merlin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>\u2018Stream share\u2019 in this context means the combined entities\u2019 market share of the total global volume of <em>music<\/em> streams on<strong> Spotify<\/strong> (i.e. not including audiobooks and podcasts).<\/li>\n<li>Entities <em>not<\/em> covered by the stat include any label or distributor that licenses Spotify outside of deals inked by <strong>UMG\/Sony\/Warner\/Virgin\/<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; The Orchard [324 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/sony\/sony-music-group\/sony-music-entertainment\/the-orchard\/\">The Orchard<\/a>\/<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; AWAL [350 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/sony\/sony-music-group\/sony-music-entertainment\/awal\/\">AWAL<\/a>\/ADA\/Merlin<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li>This non-major\/Merlin cohort includes <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; DistroKid [135 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/distrokid\/\">DistroKid<\/a>, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Empire [207 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/empire\/\">Empire<\/a>, <\/strong>and <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Believe [589 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/believe\/\">Believe<\/a>\/<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; TuneCore [331 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/believe\/tunecore\/\">TuneCore<\/a><\/strong>,\u00a0plus <strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; BMG [1,112 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/bertelsmann\/bmg\/\">BMG<\/a><\/strong>, which began distributing its catalog to Spotify directly in 2023. It also includes <strong>large Merlin members<\/strong> who choose to license Spotify directly, rather than via Merlin\u2019s opt-in collective agreements.<\/li>\n<li>To reiterate: This is a measurement of streaming <em>volume<\/em> market share; it\u2019s therefore <strong>unaffected by any changes\u00a0<\/strong><strong>to Spotify\u2019s royalty models\u00a0<\/strong>(including the\u00a0so-called \u2018artist-centric\u2019 royalty frameworks).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>With that all understood, <strong>let\u2019s dig in.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From <strong>2017 to 2024<\/strong>, the majors-plus-Merlin cohort saw their combined annual volume market share of music plays on Spotify consistently\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">decline, from<strong>\u00a087%<\/strong> in 2017<\/span>\u00a0 all the way down to <strong>71%<\/strong> in <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/the-major-record-companies-lost-market-share-again-on-spotify-last-year-but-bmg-and-artist-centric-royalties-make-this-a-more-complicated-picture-than-it-first-appears\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2024<\/a> \u2013 a <strong>1,600 basis point<\/strong> decline.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">During the same period (2017-2024), recorded music companies not represented by <strong>the majors or Merlin<\/strong> on Spotify saw their combined market share grow substantially, from <strong>13%<\/strong> in 2017\u00a0<\/span>to <strong>29%<\/strong> in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>In 2025, according to Spotify\u2019s new <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/s29.q4cdn.com\/175625835\/files\/doc_financials\/2025\/q4\/Spotify-20-F-Filing.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">20-F annual report<\/a>, the <strong>majors-plus-Merlin<\/strong> cohort <em>gained<\/em> a point of market share. Its repertoire\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">accounted for\u00a0<strong>72%<\/strong> of all global music plays, while non-major or Merlin companies accounted for<\/span>\u00a0<strong>28%<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>This was the first time in <strong>Spotify\u2019s history<\/strong> as a public company that <strong>majors-plus-Merlin<\/strong> have grown their market share YoY.<\/p>\n<hr\/>\n<figure class=\"mbw-articlepic mbw-articlepic--center\"><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2026\/02\/spotify-majors-and-merlin-share.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\/><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-internal\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2026\/02\/spotify-majors-and-merlin-share.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"\/><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/files\/2026\/02\/spotify-majors-and-merlin-share.png\" data-lightbox=\"image-set\" data-title=\"\"><i class=\"fas fa-search-plus magnifying-glass-icon\"\/><\/a><\/figure>\n<hr\/>\n<p>Factors worth considering in this story include the high-streaming clients represented by <strong>Merlin<\/strong> and\/or the indie arms of the major music companies. Not least The Orchard, which distributed the biggest album on Spotify globally last year \u2013 Bad Bunny\u2019s <span data-huuid=\"16754766081417703656\"><strong>DeB\u00cd TiRAR M\u00e1S FOToS.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the major music companies represented all ten of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2025-12-03\/wrapped-top-artists-songs-albums-podcasts-audiobooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">biggest albums<\/a> on Spotify last year, including the<strong> K-pop Demon Hunters<\/strong> soundtrack (via UMG\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Republic Records [304 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/republic-records\/\">Republic Records<\/a>) at No.2, <strong>Hit Me Hard And Soft<\/strong> by Billie Eilish (via UMG\u2019s Interscope) at No.3, SZA\u2019s <strong>SOS LANA edition<\/strong> (via Sony\u2019s RCA) at No.4, and Sabrina Carpenter\u2019s <strong>Short N Sweet<\/strong> (via <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-relationship\" title=\"Companies &gt; Island Records [605 articles]\" href=\"https:\/\/www.musicbusinessworldwide.com\/companies\/universal-music-group\/island-records\/\">Island<\/a>\/UMG) at No.5.<\/p>\n<p>The majors also represented all of the <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2025-12-03\/wrapped-top-artists-songs-albums-podcasts-audiobooks\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Top 10 songs<\/a> on Spotify globally in 2025 \u2013 unlike in 2024, when <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" class=\"link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.spotify.com\/2024-12-04\/top-songs-artists-podcasts-audiobooks-albums-trends-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">No.4<\/a> (<em>Gata Only<\/em>) was distributed by UnitedMasters.<\/p>\n<p>The major labels\u2019 global dominance of the <strong>superstar market<\/strong>, however, is something we\u2019ve long been accustomed to.<\/p>\n<p>Turn this story around, and there\u2019s <strong>perhaps a bigger narrative at play.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>One of the factors in the decline of the majors\u2019 <strong>Spotify market share<\/strong> over the past decade has been the collective streaming growth pulled in by the voluminous so-called<strong> \u2018middle-class\u2019<\/strong> of artists \u2013 i.e. commercially meaningful acts operating way below the global Top 10 (and indeed, the Top 100) lists of each year.<\/p>\n<p>Much of this \u2018middle-class\u2019 artist growth has taken place outside the walls of <strong>UMG, Sony, and Warner<\/strong>.
