Charli xcx’s<\/a> soundtrack for Emerald Fennell’s adaptation of Emily Bront\u00eb\u2019s \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d<\/a> is a brooding collection approximating some image of gothic romanticism.<\/p>\n

Its enjoyable if not revelatory 12 tracks are a collaboration with songwriters and producers Finn Keane and Justin Raisen<\/a>, and her first full-length album since the zeitgeist-shaping \u201cBrat.\u201d<\/a><\/p>\n

It is not the role of every film soundtrack<\/a> to function as a standalone album,<\/a> though Charli has said that was her ambition here. In the midst of her \u201cBrat\u201d summer<\/a> two years ago, she worked on \u201cWuthering Heights,\u201d delighted to detour into different territory. <\/p>\n

But how different is it in ethos? There’s a shared spirit of deep devotion and infatuation, surely, in both \u201cBrat\u201d and Bront\u00eb\u2019s \u201cWuthering Heights,\u201d and a shared sexuality in Charli and Fennell’s art \u2014 people wear corsets to nightclubs these days. Instrumentation might be the biggest distinction; here, Charli uses strings arrangements for the first time, often for propulsion, like on the anxious \u201cSeeing Things.\u201d<\/p>\n

The rave work might have been put to the side, but Charli\u2019s signatures remain throughout: auto-tuned vocals, unexpected production, shackled and resonant pop hooks.<\/p>\n

They are everywhere on \u201cWuthering Heights,\u201d from the previously released singles like \u201cWall of Sound\u201d \u2014 no Phil Spector<\/a> here \u2014 and the spacey ballad \u201cChains of Love,\u201d with its echoes of Taylor Swift<\/a>, to the electro-pop \u201cMy Reminder\u201d and an underutilized Sky Ferreira<\/a> on \u201cEyes of the World.\u201d The last is their first collaboration since 2019\u2019s \u201cCross You Out\u201d and samples English rock band Wolf Alice\u2019s \u201cDon\u2019t Delete the Kisses.\u201d<\/p>\n

It’s likely that Charli has a great industrial record in her, evidenced by the first song released for the soundtrack and its undisputed best: \u201cHouse,\u201d featuring the great experimentalist John Cale. (It’s no wonder it works so well: Charli is an undisputed Velvet Underground<\/a> superfan. The band’s high art, pop fame is a central theme in her vision, as is their ability to combine the \u201celegant and brutal\u201d \u2014 a favorite quote of hers that is actually a quote of his.) Cale recites a poem in his weathered Welsh tone atop cello and metallic sounds, building into its booming final minute. \u201cI think I’m gonna die in this house,\u201d he and Charli harmonize. It builds in distortion from there, the album’s only true moment of gothic seduction, before Cale brings it to a spoken word coda. \u201cIn every room,\u201d he says, \u201cI hear silence.\u201d<\/p>\n

In whole, \u201cWuthering Heights\u201d does function as an album as much as it does a soundtrack \u2014 but that’s mostly the benefit of having a single artist realize their single vision, a privilege rarely afforded. Charli xcx does not waste it here.<\/p>\n
