Terry Thomas’ movie career took off in the mid-1950s, featuring in iconic films like The Green Man with Alastair Sim and the Boulting brothers’ Private’s Progress with Ian Carmichael and Richard Attenborough, yet his final years took a heartbreaking turn.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite decades of dedication to the entertainment industry,<\/a> Tommy’s life ended in financial hardship. His career took a devastating toll after being plunged into near-freezing waters during the filming of The Naked Truth.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Health issues followed, leaving him dependent on powerful prescription painkillers. Then in 1971, Tommy received a Parkinson’s disease<\/a> diagnosis after collapsing during a theatrical performance in Sydney, Australia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The condition was identified when his physician spotted a subtle tremor in his hands. He concealed his condition for as long as possible, but ultimately went public to dispel speculation that his shaking and unclear speech stemmed from drinking.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Although the performer did his utmost to keep working, he battled symptoms, including a twisted posture, and his signature voice had changed. His last screen appearance came in a German-Italian production called Febbre A 40 in 1980, though it received minimal distribution, reports the Express.<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The star rapidly encountered severe financial hardship as his healthcare costs ballooned to an estimated \u00a340,000 ($50,000) annually. He was compelled to offload his London apartment and subsequently the property he occupied with his spouse, Belinda Cunningham.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Ultimately, the pair were forced to lease a housing association apartment in south London and to request support from the Actors’ Benevolent Fund as their finances continued to diminish.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Thomas was quoted as saying: “One doctor said I’ve got about four more years to live. God forbid! I shall probably blow my brains out first.”<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
