Most people already have a version of John F. Kennedy Jr. and Carolyn Bessette Kennedy firmly planted in their heads.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s built from magazine covers and paparazzi photos. From that image of a young boy saluting his father\u2019s casket. From the quiet elegance of a woman who never gave an interview but became a style icon. Portraying these beloved figures on screen comes with a lot of expectations \u2014 from the public, from history and from family and friends who feel protective of them.<\/p>\n
For Paul Anthony Kelly and Sarah Pidgeon, stars of the new TV series Love Story: John F. Kennedy Jr. & Carolyn Bessette<\/a>, that meant walking into roles in which the audience\u2019s emotional investment wasn\u2019t just high \u2014 it was already deeply personal.<\/p>\n \u201cI think there\u2019s always pressure when you play any character, wanting to do it right,” Pidgeon tells Yahoo ahead of the Feb. 12 premiere on FX and Hulu. “But of course, there\u2019s added pressure when you\u2019re playing a real person and wanting to do their legacy justice.\u201d<\/p>\n That pressure is tied to the way the public feels it grew up alongside them.<\/p>\n \u201cCarolyn and John have such cultural importance, and people feel very protective of them,\u201d Pidgeon explains. \u201cI think that\u2019s partly because people watched John grow up and felt like they really witnessed this young boy become a man. There\u2019s also such intense interest in their marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n If John\u2019s life unfolded publicly, Carolyn\u2019s was far more elusive \u2014 which, paradoxically, may be why she remains so mythologized. She never sat for a profile interview. She never wrote a memoir. Much of what the public believes it knows about her comes from photographs and secondhand accounts. The couple wed in 1996 in a private ceremony in Georgia and died, along with Carolyn\u2019s sister, Lauren, just three years later in a 1999 plane crash off the coast of Massachusetts \u2014 a tragedy that sealed their story in public memory.<\/p>\n Carolyn and John have such cultural importance, and people feel very protective of them,<\/p>\n Sarah Pidgeon<\/p>\n For Pidgeon, that meant constructing a person from fragments.<\/p>\n \u201cAt times, it was a challenge trying to thread the needle and figure out who Carolyn was,\u201d she says. \u201cThis was an oral history I had to piece together from books and from people who knew her, trying to figure out what rang true and what overlapped \u2014 the common threads in how people described her.\u201d<\/p>\n When asked whether either actor had the opportunity to speak with close friends or family members, the answer came quickly: No. The project, Pidgeon, explains “was pretty insular to the set and the creatives.”<\/p>\n \u201cWe were just in our own little group doing this thing,\u201d Kelly adds. \u201cIt made it easier not to feel the outside pressure and just live in it.\u201d<\/p>\n That insulation wasn\u2019t avoidance; it was focus. Without direct access to those closest to John and Carolyn, the actors relied on research, scripts and the creative team \u2014 building performances from documented history rather than private endorsement.<\/p>\n Kelly\u2019s preparation reflected that same rigor with more resources. Unlike Carolyn, John left behind interviews, recordings and public appearances that captured his voice and presence.<\/p>\n \u201cWhen I was cast in this role, I just had to hit the books and consume everything I could get my hands on,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019m in the lucky seat where John was a very well-documented individual.\u201d<\/p>\n One unexpected tool proved especially helpful: John narrating his father\u2019s book, Profiles in Courage<\/a>. \u201cI listened to that religiously to slip into his vocal rhythms, the way he carried himself through his voice and the way he talked.\u201d<\/p>\n Producers say they took pains to get the couple’s romance right. (FX\/YouTube)<\/p>\n (FX\/Youtube)<\/span><\/div>\n Still, preparation doesn\u2019t eliminate expectation.<\/p>\n \u201cThey\u2019re both such beloved individuals,\u201d Kelly says. \u201cJohn is America\u2019s own crown prince, so there\u2019s definitely a lot of pressure that goes into that.\u201d<\/p>\n That word \u2014 pressure \u2014 extends well beyond the actors. Viewers will inevitably ask how much of Love Story is historical record and how much is dramatization. Creator Connor Hines tells Yahoo the approach was deliberate.<\/p>\n \u201cWe did extensive research \u2014 read everything imaginable: books, articles,\u201d he explains. \u201cEverything sort of had to be corroborated by multiple narratives.\u201d<\/p>\n But even the most publicized relationships have gaps, which leads to some creative liberties. The debut episode, for example, takes place entirely in the couple’s apartment with incredibly personal dialogue.<\/p>\n \u201cThere are obviously moments behind closed doors where you have to consider the couple that we understood really well and extrapolate where they would be emotionally,\u201d Hines says. \u201cWe knew that she struggled with the fame. We knew his approach to handling it. We knew hers. We had a very good understanding of who they were, first and foremost.\u201d<\/p>\n You\u2019re adjusting and figuring it out as you go along. People weren\u2019t looking at the finished product.<\/p>\n Brad Simpson<\/p>\n That foundation, he says, allowed the team to navigate the inevitable gray areas. \u201cThe emotional components \u2014 obviously, you have to take a leap of faith \u2014 but we feel very much that the show is true to the essence of who they were.\u201d<\/p>\n Executive producer Nina Jacobson describes the line between fact and fiction as refinement rather than invention.<\/p>\n \u201cYou have to compress time,\u201d she says. \u201cThat\u2019s where people might find, \u2018Wait a second, that didn\u2019t happen the same year or month that that happened.\u2019 But we wouldn\u2019t be making up a thing that never happened.\u201d<\/p>\n Videos and photos exist of the couple arguing in 1996, for example. The spat was seen and documented<\/a> \u2014 but never heard.<\/p>\n \u201cNobody heard all the words,\u201d Jacobson notes. \u201cSo of course we have to put in the words based on the emotional reality of what we know about the characters to date.\u201d<\/p>\n The guiding principle, Hines says, was simple: \u201cEverything had to be supported in terms of what we felt would be true to who we knew them to be.\u201d<\/p>\n That scrutiny didn\u2019t remain theoretical for long. Early in production, paparazzi captured images from set, and the outrage was swift. Social media lit up with commentary \u2014 particularly around Carolyn\u2019s appearance \u2014 before a single finished scene had aired. (A new costume designer<\/a> was reportedly hired.) \u201cYou make a show over nine months. You\u2019re adjusting and figuring it out as you go along. People weren\u2019t looking at the finished product.\u201d<\/p>\n The intensity of the reaction underscored what the cast already understood: This wasn\u2019t simply another period drama. It was a story people felt ownership over.<\/p>\n \u201cThere was so much to learn through this process \u2014 not only about Carolyn and John, but \u2026 how to navigate this world as an actor and the internet,\u201d Pidgeon says.<\/p>\n Yet neither actor describes the pressure as something to defeat. Instead, it\u2019s something they approached with care.<\/p>\n Portraying figures who remain so present in cultural memory isn\u2019t just about resemblance. It\u2019s about trust. It\u2019s about recognizing that for many viewers, these aren\u2019t simply characters on a screen \u2014 they\u2019re part of a shared history.<\/p>\n All eyes may be on Love Story.
