After a week of many of this year\u2019s Oscar contenders being feted at the Santa Barbara International Film Festival, Kate Hudson sat down for a wide-ranging chat about her career for the fest\u2019s final tribute.<\/p>\n
In a Friday night conversation with The Hollywood Reporter\u2018s Scott Feinberg, the Song Sung Blue star went all the way back to the beginning, reflecting on being raised in a Hollywood household<\/a>, and her early breakout \u2014 and first Oscar nom \u2014 with Almost Famous.<\/p>\n More from The Hollywood Reporter<\/strong><\/p>\n At the 2001 Academy Awards, \u201cI lost, and everything happened so fast. My dad just turned to me \u2014 he was down a couple, and Kurt [Russell] just goes, \u2018Congratulations, now you can go have a career,’\u201d Hudson told the crowd. \u201cAnd I was like, \u2018Yeah, that\u2019s right.\u2019 And that was Kurt\u2019s way of saying, like, \u2018Welcome, this is what it is. Everything happens and in a second it\u2019s all over.’\u201d<\/p>\n From there, she would go on to become queen of the rom-com, with How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Bride Wars, Something Borrowed and Fool\u2019s Gold among her hits.<\/p>\n \u201cI think it\u2019s one of the hardest genres to get right,\u201d Hudson said, and needs to be approached \u201cwith the intention like everybody does a great film, not with the intention of making a rom-com.\u201d She also spoke about eventually trying to break out and do more with her career after years in that genre.<\/p>\n \u201cIt was clear that that\u2019s where the industry liked to hire me and then my goal, my hope, was to make the best versions of those. In that time, it was also like there\u2019s a lot of factors: you\u2019ve got your team, you\u2019ve got people saying, \u2018We really think you should do this, these are great directors.\u2019 And then you have moments where you\u2019re also like, \u2018That\u2019s a lot of money and I\u2019m a single mom,’\u201d Hudson explained. And despite working with some top filmmakers and making hits, \u201cI was starting to be like, I really want to be doing something different. And I think when you become really famous doing that genre, it\u2019s hard for certain filmmakers to see you in anything other than what we\u2019re watching. These sort of things that like, \u2018Well, transforming isn\u2019t what she does\u2019 when, in fact, it\u2019s what I love to do.\u201d<\/p>\n That desire to shake things up also came through in releasing 2024 album Glorious, after years of wanting to do music more seriously.<\/p>\n \u201cI always thought music would be something that I would do, but then it was like, OK, don\u2019t break what\u2019s not broken and this idea of sort of crossover careers could have been a kiss of death. You\u2019re sort of warned against it, like \u2018Just enjoy your career, enjoy this part right now,’\u201d Hudson said. When she was in her 30s, she told someone she wanted to make an album \u201cand they\u2019re like, \u2018You\u2019re kind of too old now to sort of break out as a musical act or to have a musical career.’\u201d<\/p>\n She acknowledged that \u201che wasn\u2019t wrong\u201d but \u201cit just weighed on me. And then finally COVID happened and I was like, I will just regret it if I don\u2019t do it. I have to do it,\u201d noting she was doing it for herself and didn\u2019t need it to be successful. \u201cAnd so I did it, and then I couldn\u2019t believe the reception that it received. It was so warm and loving and loved. And I was like, \u2018Why didn\u2019t I do this before?’\u201d<\/p>\n Now with her second Oscar nom<\/a>, Hudson teased a bit of what she\u2019s looking to do next as the awards attention has created new opportunities. \u201cIt doesn\u2019t mean to me that all of a sudden I just want to be doing this for the concept of the accolades; I want to do it to put people in the theater too,\u201d she mused. \u201cThis feels like the beginning of maybe that part where I get to do a little bit more transformations than maybe I\u2019ve been able to do in the past.\u201d<\/p>\n To close out the evening, Gwyneth Paltrow made an appearance to present Hudson with the Arlington Artist of the Year Award, calling her \u201ckind of like a little sister to me.\u201d<\/p>\n \u201cWe have logged a lot of life together and lived a lot of chapters alongside each other \u2014 marriages to musicians, plural. We had our expat years in London, babies and renovating houses. And, oh, her 30th birthday, where I got really drunk. My 40th birthday, where everybody, I think, got really drunk,\u201d Paltrow joked, revealing that their kids were even in a band together.
