At the New York City premiere of her upcoming comedy movie, Idiotka<\/i>, the actress said that HBO\u2019s show became her ultimate lesson for her new role.<\/p>\n

\u201cBut also, the one that we kept referencing for this was The Hype,\u201d Mendes told PEOPLE, referring to the streetwear competition series. \u201cI watched that one quite a bit, ’cause, tonally, it felt like this is more DIY reality.\u201d<\/p>\n

Mendes added that they were at the forefront of reality television, explaining that they were aiming to approach things in a new and distinctive way. <\/p>\n

She noted that this direction closely reflected Nicol\u2019s character, emphasising that theirs was not a conventional, formulaic fashion show but something designed to stand apart from the rest.<\/p>\n

Mendes also talked to the participants of fashion competition shows streamed in the past. She noted that many of the contestants have mentioned having \u201ccrazy experiences,\u201d and realized that producers would be their \u201cbest friend,” before eventually becoming \u201ckind of manipulative.\u201d<\/p>\n

With all the real-life lessons combined, Mendes is prepared to star in Idiotka<\/i>, coming out in theaters on Friday, Feb. 27.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n
