The UK Parliament\u2019s Women and Equalities Committee (WEC) is the entity behind the \u2018Misogyny in Music\u2019 inquiry, whose initial report\u00a0we covered in January 2024<\/a>, before\u00a0a follow-up in June 2025<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The latest update is a pair of letters sent to ministers by the committee\u2019s chair Sarah Owen MP focused on \u201cstronger legislative protections to tackle misogyny and the silencing of victims in the music industry and the creative sector in general\u201d.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

One letter,\u00a0to the UK\u2019s culture, media and sport secretary Lisa Nandy MP<\/a>, focuses on Ciisa, the watchdog set up to tackle discrimination and abuse in the creative industries. Owen expressed frustration at \u201ca lack of sustainable funding\u201d in comparison to similar standards authorities in other industries.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

The second letter,\u00a0to the business and trade secretary Peter Kyle MP<\/a>, focuses on legislation banning the misuse of non-disclosure agreements (NDAs) in cases of discrimination, harassment and abuse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The concern here is that the planned law changes may not cover freelancers, who are estimated to account for three quarters of music-industry workers in the UK.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIt would be simply unjustifiable to offer these protections for some workers but not all \u2013 especially in industries built on the backs of freelancers,\u201d wrote Owen.<\/p>\n\n
