Alexander, 67, Jay Manuel, 53,\u00a0 <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/05\/20\/lifestyle\/antms-nigel-barker-senior-portraits-subjects-were-more-fierce-than-supermodels\/\">Nigel Barker<\/a>, 53, and former contestants such as Shandi Sullivan, 43, Dani Evans, 40, Whitney Thompson, 38, and Ebony Haith, 47, and Giselle Samson, 41.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Tyra Banks in \u201cReality Check.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cReality Check\u201d covers the controversial legacy of \u201cAmerica\u2019s Next Top Model.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Here are the biggest bombshells.<\/p>\n<aside class=\"single__inline-module aligncenter wp-block-nypost-editor-primary-tag\">\n<\/aside>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Banks allegedly nearly \u201cgot physical\u201d with Les Moonves\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Mok recalled that when they were casting the show with contestants, they got \u201ca lot of pushback\u201d from the network (which was then UPN, now The CW).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you had one person of another color, that was their definition of diverse,\u201d Mok said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He claimed that they wanted a hispanic contestant on the show, and <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/04\/18\/media\/ex-cbs-ceo-les-moonves-fined-for-getting-intel-on-sex-assault-allegations\/\">disgraced ex-media exec Les Moonves, <\/a>who was the president of parent company Viacom at the time, \u201cdid not want that.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI lost it,\u201d Banks recalled onscreen.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mok alleged, \u201cTyra was arguing with Les to the point where it almost got physical\u2026let\u2019s not torpedo the show before we go on the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jay Manuel said David Bowie approved.  <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>David Bowie\u2019s verdict\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Manuel, who was the creative director on \u201cAmerica\u2019s Next Top Model,\u201d recalled that when they were filming Cycle 1, \u201cI had no clue what was going to air.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy phone rang, it was Iman that called\u2026..she said \u2018we watched\u2019 and she hands the phone to David [Bowie],\u201d he recalled. \u201cHe said to me, \u2018You found the place where you need to be.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Many former \u201cAmerica\u2019s Next Top Model\u201d contestants reflect on their journeys.  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9CW Network\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Body image issues\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Giselle Samson, a contestant who was on Cycle 1, said the show left her with lingering body image issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m 18 years old, growing into my body, and [Banks] is like \u2018Giselle, she\u2019s got a wide ass.\u2019 They chose to put that in there [onscreen].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Samson said that how she felt about herself in that moment, \u201chas stayed with me, forever. Why does my ass have to be so wide? Like that\u2019s how I talk to myself, to this day.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Samson added that the modeling career she\u2019d hoped for never materialized, because of the way she was depicted onscreen, she believes. \u201cAgents and managers wanted nothing to do with me because I had no confidence. Who\u2019s going to hire that girl?\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Shandi Sullivan alleged that she was too inebriated to consent to sex, and production framed it as \u201ccheating\u201d on her boyfriend.  <span class=\"credit\">Hulu\/UPN<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Shandi\u2019s onscreen alleged assault\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Sullivan, a former contestant on Cycle 2, alleged that while the models were on a trip to Milan, she was too inebriated to consent to having sex with a man.<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/pagesix.com\/2026\/02\/11\/celebrity-news\/antm-contestant-shandi-sullivan-claims-producers-framed-her-sexual-assault-as-cheating\/\"> The incident was filmed<\/a> and treated as an onscreen storyline about cheating on her boyfriend.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI remember him on top of me. I was blacked out. No one did anything to stop it. And it all got filmed, all of it,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Banks said, \u201cI do remember her story. It\u2019s a little difficult for me to talk about production, because that\u2019s not my territory.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Manuel said he didn\u2019t know \u201cwhose decision it was\u201d to film Sulllivan.  <span class=\"credit\">Hulu\/UPN<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mok weighed in that they treated the show like a \u201cdocumentary\u201d and informed the women from the start that they\u2019d be followed by cameras constantly.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manuel recalled that Shandi was in the shower with the man, and the rule was that a camera couldn\u2019t follow anyone who went into a bathroom alone.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut in the shower, she was technically not alone. So the cameras went in, and they captured it. I don\u2019t know whose decision it was.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But because it was a \u201cstory point,\u201d the producers felt the need to \u201csee it all the way through,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Sullivan said the camera man and sound man apologized to her.  <span class=\"credit\">Hulu\/UPN<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>When Shandi called her then-boyfriend to inform him what happened, he called her a \u201cf\u2013king bitch\u201d and the show captured it on camera.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was just the sound guy, and the guy filming,\u201d she recalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>After hanging up with her boyfriend, she was lying \u201con the floor in the fetal position, just crying. And [the sound guy and camera man] both come up to me and they said, \u2018We\u2019re really really sorry that we had to film that.\u2019 They just knew that this isn\u2019t right.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Ken Mok said when Shandi\u2019s scenes were being edited, \u201cwe scaled back that scene in a significant way.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">WireImage for VH-1 Channel \u2013 New York<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Mok said that when the episode was being edited, \u201cWe scaled back that scene in a significant way.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Reflecting on the incident, Banks said that she wasn\u2019t involved in the show\u2019s \u201cstory\u201d and editing.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s Ken Mok, but\u2026It\u2019s important for people to know that we didn\u2019t put everything on TV.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>\u201cReality Check\u201d dives into the legacy of complicated photo shoots.  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9CW Network\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Controversial photoshoots, like the \u201crace swap\u201d\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>The documentary covers how \u201cTop Model\u201d started having outlandish photoshoots, such as having models pose with cockroaches, pretend to be murder victims, and pretend to be a different race.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Banks cited \u201cFear Factor\u201d and \u201cSurvivor\u201d for the segments. \u201cIt was a time in the world where there were these shows\u2026pushing the limits. And so, we kept pushing it. You guys were demanding it. The viewers wanted more.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manuel said, \u201cThe shoot I had the most difficult time with was this race swapping shoot,\u201d citing a Cycle 4 and Cycle 14 photoshoot where they had the aspiring models dress up as other races, such as a white woman dressing like a black woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy parents are from South Africa, they grew up during Apartheid, I\u2019m very aware of that history,\u201d he said. \u201cI just had to do my job.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Tyra Banks said her hindsight is \u201c20\/20.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9CW Network\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Banks didn\u2019t think it was controversial at the time.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was in my own little bubble, my own head, and this was my way of showing the world that brown and black is beautiful. But then we put it out there and the world was like \u2018are you crazy? Have you lost your mind?\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Banks said that as she reflects back, \u201cit\u2019s an issue, and I understand 100% why.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Models said they had pressure to do cosmetic procedures such as fixing a gap tooth.  <span class=\"credit\">Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pressure to get cosmetic procedures<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Danielle Evans, aka Dani Evans, was on Cycle 6 in 2006. She had a gap between her teeth that she was proud of, but she recalled the production sending her to the dentist and encouraging her to fix it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI was like, \u2018no I don\u2019t wanna close my gap, it\u2019s not your right to tell me what to do with my body,\u2019\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>But she eventually was pressured to close it.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Dani Evans said she was pressure to close a gap between her teeth.  <span class=\"credit\">Liz Sullivan<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The documentary pointed out how in a future season, Banks encouraged another contestant to widen a gap between her teeth.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barker weighed in and said that he didn\u2019t think it was a good idea for Evans. \u201cI thought she looked great with a gap between her teeth and that perfection is boring,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Onscreen, Banks chimed in, \u201cI\u2019ve actually apologized for the issue with Dani and what happened.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Banks claimed that she felt like she was \u201cbetween a rock and a hard place,\u201d because agents told her that a tooth gap would prohibit Evans from getting work.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat\u2019s what they told me. And again, I could have just been quiet and let them handle it. But hindsight is 20\/20 for all of us,\u201d said Banks.\u00a0\u201cIt just so happens that a lot of things that are 20\/20 for me happened in front of the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Evans scoffed at Banks\u2019 apology onscreen, saying, \u201cBull f\u2013king s\u2013t. Me getting my gap closed is not opening any doors for me. You knew what you were doing. It\u2019s a TV show to you guys, but this is my life.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Some of the models felt \u201cthrown to the wolves\u201d after the show, they said.  <span class=\"credit\">BACKGRID<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The models didn\u2019t feel set up for future careers<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>After Evans won in 2006, \u201cthey just threw me to the wolves,\u201d she said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She thought she would have a modeling career, but she said that because she had been on \u201cAmerica\u2019s Next Top Model\u201d designers didn\u2019t want her to walk in their shows and distract from their collections.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat angers me the most is the conversation that Tyra had with me, years later. She was like, \u2018I knew that there were certain doors that you couldn\u2019t even get into,\u2019\u201d because of the show, Evans alleged.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evans said that she replied, \u201cRespectfully Tyra, you have no f\u2013king idea how painful it has been for me\u2026.but for you to admit to me 15 years later,\u00a0\u2018I\u00a0knew the hell you\u2019ve been going through, I knew you haven\u2019t been able to walk through the threshold of certain doors. And to have her, a black woman, say to me, over the phone, \u2018I knew you were struggling and I did nothing about it.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Evans said that the show built an \u201cempire\u201d and a \u201cmultimillion-dollar brand off the backs \u201cof every girl\u2019s dream and it never got realized.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\"> <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Firing Alexander, Manuel, and Barker<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>In 2012, it was reported that Banks fired Alexander, Manuel, and Barker.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Banks said that the network told her to do it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt shocked me. I was like, what? There was no need to\u00a0 replace them,\u201d Mok recalled.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor my birthday, Tyra sent me flowers\u2026And then I was fired five days later,\u201d said Alexander.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Barker noted that he felt \u201cbetrayed.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was difficult, because I didn\u2019t have a backup plan at that point. I had been on \u2018Top Model\u2019 for 17 seasons.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Manuel alleged that they agreed to put out a press release framing the situation like they hadn\u2019t been fired.<\/p>\n<p>He said he felt that it was \u201cdeliberate\u201d that the show didn\u2019t allow people \u201cwho have been part of it \u201csince its inception\u201d to move \u201cforward in their careers with grace.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Nigel Barker said he felt \u201cbetrayed\u201d after getting fired.  <span class=\"credit\">\u00a9CW Network\/Courtesy Everett Collection<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>Jay Manuel said he didn\u2019t feel like he was allowed to move on \u201cwith grace\u201d after getting fired.  <span class=\"credit\">SYLVAIN GABOURY \/ DMI<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Banks called it the \u201chardest news I have ever had to deliver in my existence\u201d and said, \u201cI cried myself to sleep that night.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>She called Alexander, Manuel, and Baker, \u201csome of the closest people in my life, And me and Ken have to deliver that news that the deal is up, that it is over? You can imagine what that feels like.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut bosses have bosses, and the big boss was very clear, there are no sacred cows. And I heard that meaning, \u2018you too, Tyra. So pick up the phone and do what I\u2019m telling you to do.\u2019\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Banks said that she doesn\u2019t believe they were aware that the order \u201ccame from above.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo this day, I think they think that it was me, and Ken,\u201d she explained.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"nyp-slideshow-modal-image wp-block-image aligncenter size-large\"><figcaption>J Alexander revealed that he\u2019d had a stroke in 2022, in \u201cReality Check.\u201d  <span class=\"credit\">Courtesy of Netflix<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Alexander\u2019s heath battle\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Alexander revealed that he suffered a stroke in Dec. 2022. He spent five weeks in a coma, and couldn\u2019t walk and talk.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was emotional. I cried. I\u2019m not ashamed to say that I cried. And once I was in the hospital, Jay and Nigel came to visit,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat was just such a terrible shock, and really upsetting and horrifying and scary,\u201d Barker recalled. \u201cThe two of us cried together, and I held him.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Although Alexander is now talking and participated in the doc, the camera panned out to show him in a wheelchair.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI taught models how to walk and now I can\u2019t walk, not yet. I\u2019m determined to walk. You\u2019re gonna see me again, I\u2019m sure. I feel like my work is not done.
