Skrilla said the \u201c6-7\u201d craze<\/a> connected to his drill rap hit almost didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

His 2024 release, \u201cDoot Doot (6-7),\u201d became popular in TikTok videos with basketball players<\/a> last year. Now, young people all over the world are shouting the non-sensical phrase seemingly non-stop, often pairing it with an up-and-down arm motion with upward palms.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Skrilla said he nearly didn’t publish the song and considered it \u201ca throwaway.\u201d He never saw any aspect of it becoming popular, much less inspiring a global phenomenon.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

“It didn\u2019t even cross my mind,\u201d he told The Associated Press. \u201cIt was an unreleased song. I had just leaked it and it went crazy off of a leaked song. I leaked it because I didn\u2019t really have too much faith in it. I didn\u2019t really care too much about the song.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The initial popularity caused him to officially release it in 2025, and now, \u201c6-7\u201d is everywhere. Athletes use it to celebrate big plays. It’s popular in classrooms, at sporting events and at his concerts. <\/p>\n<\/div>\n

He said it all has caused him to view his work differently.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cNow when I\u2019m recording in the studio, when I\u2019m making a song and I feel like I don\u2019t like it, I force myself to like it,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd when I\u2019m making a song and I\u2019m like ready to be over, done with the song, I\u2019ll finish it just cause \u2014 just out of the respect for \u20186-7.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Skrilla said \u20186-7\u2019 means whatever people want it to mean, and he loves the joy the trend has brought to people. But anything popular draws scrutiny. He said he\u2019s heard it all when it comes to what ‘6-7’ means.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cI\u2019m not a bad person,” he said. “And \u20186-7\u2019 is not a demonic cult or whatever people be making up \u2014 these stories, these crazy stories people be making up. It\u2019s just crazy. Yeah, it\u2019s a lot of crazy stories about \u20186-7\u2019 and demonic and devil worshiping, and I\u2019m not a devil worshiper at all either, as well. And \u20186-7\u2019 isn\u2019t a cult.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Despite the critics, Skrilla is excited that the emergence of the trend at college and pro basketball games has kept it fresh. And he\u2019s glad that it has made him more visible \u2014 even if it has outgrown him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\n

\u201cEverything that \u20186-7\u2019 has brought to me excites me,\u201d he said. \u201cEvery door it opens excites me.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
