It has become more than just to save money being viewed as a more affordable way to be fashionable and to express yourself. H<\/span>owever,\u00a0<\/span>inspiration<\/span>\u00a0may stem from areas that are more than monetary.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

For many students, thrifting is not a new habit developed in college, but rather a long-standing family practice. President of\u00a0<\/span>The\u00a0<\/span>Thrift Club<\/span>\u00a0of SFASU,<\/span>\u00a0Jacob Crosby, a junior graphic design major from Kyle,\u00a0<\/span>noted the practicality and ventures that could come from\u00a0<\/span>such a hobby.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cAs I got older and started to develop my business, Fantastic Finds, and eventually the thrift club, I just realized what a unique opportunity\u00a0<\/span>store<\/span>s<\/span>\u00a0offer<\/span>,\u201d Crosby said. \u201cBeing able to get a taste of lots of\u00a0<\/span>different styles<\/span>\u00a0for an affordable price\u00a0<\/span>and also\u00a0<\/span>supporting the community.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

The<\/span>\u00a0Thrift Club of SFASU<\/span>\u00a0has had\u00a0<\/span>major<\/span>\u00a0growth<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>with social media and GroupMe being used as an active space for students to sell, buy and\u00a0<\/span>trad<\/span>e<\/span>\u00a0clothes from one another.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>An important reminder in starting\u00a0<\/span>your thrift<\/span>\u00a0journey came from\u00a0<\/span>Crosby<\/span>, who recommended\u00a0<\/span>not<\/span>\u00a0to<\/span>\u00a0jump straight in but to start off slowly.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Emily Mena<\/span>, a\u00a0<\/span>freshman<\/span>\u00a0n<\/span>ursing\u00a0<\/span>major\u00a0<\/span>fro<\/span>m\u00a0<\/span>Dallas<\/span>,\u00a0<\/span>has been thrifting since\u00a0<\/span>her\u00a0<\/span>junior year in high school. It has<\/span> imp<\/span>acte<\/span>d<\/span>\u00a0her more in college<\/span>, acting as\u00a0<\/span>a<\/span>\u00a0<\/span>continu<\/span>ing\u00a0<\/span>reason<\/span>\u00a0for her to\u00a0<\/span>keep\u00a0<\/span>thrifting<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cSometimes you’re lucky to find great pieces of clothing for a cheap price even if they are name brand,\u201d Mena said. \u201cIt allows you to think creatively and helps to avoid fast-fashion.\u00a0<\/span>Don\u2019t<\/span>\u00a0get discouraged if you have no luck, one thing to remember it that thrift stores are always getting stocked<\/span>.<\/span>\u201d<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Thrifting has been around for quite a while now, starting between the mid-1800s and has grown to be a lifestyle<\/span>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span>Many students around campus not only find it a better\u00a0<\/span>option<\/span>\u00a0for shopping but also enjoyable, such<\/span>\u00a0as<\/span>\u00a0Jonathan Ibarra, a\u00a0<\/span>freshman\u00a0<\/span>accounting major\u00a0<\/span>from\u00a0<\/span>Dallas<\/span>.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

\u201cIt has impacted me to help expand my closet and keep up with fashion life while in college and saving money,\u201d Ibarra said. \u201cI enjoy putting on a good outfit going on about my day, makes it more affordable than to shop at other stores that overprice clothing\u201d<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n

With\u00a0<\/span>around 65<\/span>\u00a0members being part\u00a0<\/span>of<\/span>\u00a0The Thrift Club of SFASU and\u00a0<\/span>many more student entrepreneurs\u00a0<\/span>starting<\/span>\u00a0their\u00a0<\/span>own\u00a0<\/span>thrift business with the help of their peers, thrift cul<\/span>ture is quickly incorporating itself into our\u00a0<\/span>society.\u00a0<\/span>The oldest town in Texas can help with any student<\/span>\u00a0wanting to get started with vendor malls, antique\u00a0<\/span>markets<\/span>\u00a0and second-hand\u00a0<\/span>stores<\/span>\u00a0around every corner.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n
