The Reverend Jesse Jackson<\/a>, one of the best-known U.S. civil rights activists, has died at the age 84.<\/p>\n

His family said in a statement that Jackson<\/a> \u201cdied peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family.\u201d<\/p>\n

Known for his civil rights activism, Jackson also ran for president in 1984, becoming the second African American to do so after Shirley Chisholm<\/a>. He ran as a Democrat, just as he did again in 1988.<\/p>\n

The full statement said: \u201cIt is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Civil Rights leader and founder of the Rainbow Push Coalition, the Honorable Reverend Jesse Louis Jackson, Sr. \u201cHe died peacefully on Tuesday morning, surrounded by his family. \u201cHis unwavering commitment to justice, equality, and human rights helped shape a global movement for freedom and dignity.
