It was the night before this year’s Oscar nominations, and she was in Montreal, shooting her next film, an untitled project about a pair of estranged sisters, played by Sarah Paulson and Naomi Watts. By that point, A’zion had been on her first-ever awards-show run for her breakout performance as the subtly savvy Rachel opposite Timothée Chalamet in Josh Safdie’s table tennis opus Marty Supreme (now A24’s biggest domestic hit), for which she scored nominations in the Best Supporting Actress category for the New York Film Critics Online and the Actor Awards (formerly the SAG Awards).

A’zion is famously superstitious. As a kid, she tells me, she slept encircled by stuffed animals that all had to be touching and drew an alien on her pillow because she “thought the animals would protect me from the aliens.” She usually wouldn’t have watched the livecast at all and tries not to get caught up in the awards-show hype. But for the Oscars, she broke protocol and watched the nominations in her hotel room before heading to work. “Everyone on set kept mentioning to me, ‘The Oscar noms are tomorrow!’ ‘The Oscar noms are tomorrow!’ And I’m like, ‘Please stop talking to me about that,’” the 25-year-old recalls to me dryly. No Oscar nod came through for her, though the film received nine overall. She felt that, somehow, it was her fault: “With SAG and BAFTA, I had no idea the noms were happening, so I didn’t have a chance to jinx myself.”

Carin Backoff

Top, trousers, belt, Versace.

A few days later, on set, A’zion and a makeup artist, Kyra Panchenko (who also worked on Marty Supreme), joked about being “the losers of the group,” A’zion tells me.
