{"id":2288241,"date":"2026-02-18T23:09:45","date_gmt":"2026-02-18T23:09:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/?p=2288241"},"modified":"2026-02-18T23:09:45","modified_gmt":"2026-02-18T23:09:45","slug":"bsus-food-and-music-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/celebrity.land\/en\/bsus-food-and-music-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"BSU\u2019S Food and Music Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<figure class=\"entry-thumbnail\">\n<br \/>\n<\/figure>\n<p><strong>By Isabella Bercan\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On February 11th the Black Student Union (BSU) and the Center of Cultural Liberation came together to host the long running Food and Music Festival, one of the many exciting events occurring during Black History Month. \u201cThe Food and Music Festival has been here for years\u2026stretching back to the 80s or 90s. The Black Student Union has been one of the most consistent organizations on campus.\u201d Leila Robinson, the BSU President shared.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Robinson stepped into this role her junior year here at Dominican. But she was always involved with the BSU executive board. \u201cGoing from treasurer to vice president and then president\u2026the role basically consists of making sure to build community.\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The festival had a huge turn out with students stopping by to grab a plate which included options such as greens, mac and cheese, chicken, and a wide assortment of sweet treats. Students dancedto the music, played games like UNO, hopscotch, and touched up on their Double Dutch skills.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Robinson continued that the festival is a way to display the culture to the students, \u201c\u2026Black students only make up about five to eight percent of the population at Dominican. So, it feels that there might not be a lot of other students who might be able to relate to us in that aspect because different backgrounds different cultures\u2026it\u2019s nice to be able to share that and have people experience a part of our culture. I also think it\u2019s a good space that encourages other Black students to get to know each other\u2026\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">CCL Leaders such as Yessenia Hernandez, associate director of the CCL and undocumented student support coordinator, helped with the event. \u201cToday, we were celebrating our food and music festival\u2026it\u2019s our kickoff to Black History Month. It\u2019s meant to bring community together and connect with students. But also coming into a collective, having a joyful moment in solidarity with one another, while also doing it with food and with music.\u201d She shared.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The BSU strives to foster a safe space for Black students, \u201clet\u2019s say there\u2019s an experience that a Black student had where they feel like they can\u2019t talk to a professor or an advisor about it\u2026we\u2019re here so Black students have an idea and a space to say their own ideas.\u201d Robinson explained.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">She went on to share it\u2019s not just about hosting events such as the Food and Music Festival because \u201cit\u2019s on a schedule\u201d but it\u2019s because students\u2019 voices transform into an event itself. \u201cWe encourage leadership, communication, and creativity\u2026\u201d<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">While Black History month takes place in February the BSU has much more to share all year around and hopes Dominican can take part in that too. \u201cDominican tries it\u2019s best\u2026but Dominican only focuses on Black excellence when it comes to February\u2026otherwise it feels like we\u2019re shadow characters in the back.\u201d Robinson went on to explain it isn\u2019t just her own singular experience, but this is something other students feel and share with her. She believes while Dominican is doing its best every day and is an involving university\u2026it could do better. \u201c\u2026just by listening to students\u2019 voices and actually involving us and in us outside of February.\u201d She added.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Christiana Dew the special events coordinator in the CCL highlighted how the festival showcases community, \u201c\u2026it\u2019s just a welcoming space, it\u2019s a chance for students, not only African American students but all students who feel welcomed\u2026to share love of culture and community\u2026\u2019\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{&quot;201341983&quot;:0,&quot;335559740&quot;:240}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">As President of the BSU Leila Robinson shared, they have so much to offer the Dominican community in and outside of February and all are welcomed to join the BSU. \u201cYou don\u2019t have to be a Black student to support or be in BSU.
