(<em>see video below<\/em>)<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>In 1878, soprano Marie Selika Williams and her husband, baritone Samson Williams, became the first Black artists to perform at The White House, giving a recital for President Rutherford B. Hayes and his guests. As part of Union County\u2019s American Revolution 250th Anniversary and Black History Month celebrations, the Hamilton Stage at<a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/ucpac.org\/\"> The Union County Performing Arts Center<\/a> will present a free show re-creating that event, <strong>\u201cMadame Selika 1878: Songbird in the White House,\u201d<\/strong> Feb. 19 at 7 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>Soprano Candice Hoyes, tenor Chauncey Packer and pianist Kyle Walker will perform in the show, which was conceived and directed by writer and WQXR host Terrance McKnight.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>Songwriter<strong> Jason Robert Brown<\/strong> \u2014 who has written music and lyrics for musicals such as \u201cThe Last Five Years,\u201d \u201cThe Bridges of Madison County,\u201d \u201cParade\u201d and \u201c13\u201d \u2014 is also a concert performer, and will appear with a band and singers Carrie St. Louis and Ashley P\u00e9rez Flanagan (both Broadway veterans) at The Kasser Theater at Montclair State University, Feb. 19 at 7:30 p.m. The show is part of Montclair State\u2019s <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peakperfs.org\/events\/\">Peak Performances<\/a>\u2018 series.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.psnj.org\"><strong>The Philharmonic of Southern New Jersey<\/strong><\/a> will present a timely \u201cSounds of Resistance\u201d program, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m. at Eastern Regional High School in Voorhees. The program will include two pieces of music that have been viewed as political statements \u2014 Shostakovich\u2019s Symphony No. 5 and Sibelius\u2019 <em>Finlandia<\/em> \u2014 and more.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"font-size: 19.552px;\">THEATER<\/strong><\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_171142\" class=\"wp-caption module image alignright\" style=\"max-width: 336px;\"><img data-recalc-dims=\"1\" loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-171142\" src=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.njarts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fair.jpg?resize=336%2C300&amp;ssl=1\" alt=\"\" width=\"336\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.njarts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fair.jpg?resize=336%2C300&amp;ssl=1 336w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.njarts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fair.jpg?resize=585%2C522&amp;ssl=1 585w, https:\/\/i0.wp.com\/www.njarts.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/fair.jpg?w=600&amp;ssl=1 600w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 336px) 100vw, 336px\"\/><\/p>\n<p class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d will be presented at three New Jersey venues.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong>The 1956 musical <strong>\u201cMy Fair Lady\u201d <\/strong>\u2014 based on George Bernard Shaw\u2019s play \u201cPygmalion\u201d \u2014 includes an amazing number of songs (written by Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe) that became well known, including \u201cI Could Have Danced All Night,\u201d \u201cGet Me to the Church on Time,\u201d \u201cI\u2019ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,\u201d \u201cThe Rain in Spain,\u201d \u201cOn the Street Where You Live\u201d and \u201cWouldn\u2019t It Be Loverly?\u201d <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.americantheatergroup.org\">American Theater Group<\/a> promises an \u201cupdated contemporary approach\u201d in its upcoming production of it, which will be at three New Jersey venues: The Sieminski Theater in Basking Ridge, Feb. 26-28 and March 1; The DMK Theater at The Union Arts Center, March 5-8; and The Hamilton Stage at The Union County Performing Arts Center in Rahway, March 13-15.<\/p>\n<p>ATG\u2019s producing artistic director James Vagias will direct, and Samantha Bruce and Andrew Fehrenbacher will co-star as Eliza Doolittle and Prof. Henry Higgins.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 <\/strong><a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/tworivertheater.org\/\">Two River Theater<\/a> in Red Bank will present Henrik Ibsen\u2019s 1879 classic <strong>\u201cA Doll\u2019s House\u201d<\/strong> from Feb. 21 to March 11. This is the world premiere of a new adaptation by Justin Emeka, who also directs. Two River Theater artistic director Justin Waldman said in a press release that Emeka \u201cplaces Nora Helmer in 1950s suburban New Jersey, at a crossroads of burgeoning civil rights and rampant red lining, to illicit a distinctly immediate and actively necessary new look at a piece of art that shocked the world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u201cDial M for Murder\u201d <\/strong>was a play before it was made into a film by Alfred Hitchcock, in 1954. But the script that <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.centenarystageco.org\/\">Centenary Stage Company<\/a> is using for its upcoming production (Feb. 20 to March 8) at The Sitnik Theatre at The Lackland Performing Arts Center in Hackettstown is not Frederick Knott\u2019s original version. It is Jeffrey Hatcher\u2019s 2022 adaptation. Hatcher made some significant changes, including, most notably, making the affair that is a crucial part of the plot a lesbian one. But he does not dwell on the point. Instead, he keeps the focus where it always was: On the many wild twists and turns of the plot, and its satisfying final resolution.<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u2022 \u201cRent in Concert,\u201d <\/strong>a music-only presentation of the songs from the late Jonathan Larson\u2019s landmark 1996 musical, will be presented at <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoarts.org\/\">The Mayo Performing Arts Center<\/a> in Morristown, Feb. 20 at 8 p.m.; and The <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.peakperfs.org\/events\/\">Peak Performances<\/a> series at The Kasser Theater at Montclair State University, Feb. 22 at 3 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>These shows are part of a national tour that includes 12 singers and a 40-piece orchestra. Springsteen and members of The E Street Band also guested at Southside Johnny &amp; the Asbury Jukes\u2019 New Year\u2019s Eve show there in 1977.<\/p>\n<p>One part of the exhibition will include photographer Eric Meola\u2019s outtakes from the original <em>Born to Run<\/em> album cover photo sessions. There will also be a section with artifacts from the <em>Born to Run<\/em> era, including material related to the Capitol shows.
