A week later, on Feb. 28, <a rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kirosha.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.kirosha.com\/\">Kingdom Voice &amp; Music<\/a> returns with its fourth annual Black History Month Celebration, which will feature music, dance and storytelling.<\/p>\n<p>Longtime Boston performance artist and educator Valerie Stephens, who will be in the spotlight at the Feb. 28 concert, said teaching the next generations about their culture is vital as it helps \u201cdevelop pride, understand strength, understand the possibilities of the future.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><cta-atoms-container-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/cta\" class=\"spacer-large\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy fear is if you don&#8217;t know your history, you can be controlled,\u201d Stephens said.<\/p>\n<p><media-image image-set=\"https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/02\/17\/NTEG\/88715905007-wmg-bhm-concert-6.jpg bestCrop, https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/02\/17\/NTEG\/88715905007-wmg-bhm-concert-6.jpg?crop=1714,1285,x100,y0 4:3, https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/02\/17\/NTEG\/88715905007-wmg-bhm-concert-6.jpg?crop=964,1285,x900,y0 3:4, https:\/\/www.gannett-cdn.com\/authoring\/authoring-images\/2026\/02\/17\/NTEG\/88715905007-wmg-bhm-concert-6.jpg?crop=1999,1125,x0,y0 16:9\" image-alt=\"\" credit=\"Rick Cinclair\/Telegram &amp; Gazette\" caption=\"Ropi Junior and Leif Torres accompany singers during a rehearsal in Lancaster Feb. 13.\" orientation=\"horizontal\" class=\"spacer-large\" util-module-path=\"elements\/media\"\/><\/p>\n<h2 class=\"presto-h2 wp-block-heading\">An &#8216;evolution&#8217; over the course of one night<\/h2>\n<p>The Feb. 21 show will take place at 6:30 p.m. at the YWCA of Central Massachusetts in downtown Worcester and will feature a set list made up of songs composed by Black women, spanning the decades between 1920 and 1970.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>The lineup of Worcester-area musicians who will perform those songs includes singers Sunta Jones, Lydia Fortune and Fanta Vibez, singer-guitarist Charles Ketter and singer-pianist Nat Needle, who said he had long hoped to put together such a concert.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"600\" outstream=\"\" momentum=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cWe&#8217;re starting with the 1920s and ending with the 1960s, so you get to see evolution from blues and Dixieland and ragtime into swing and jazz and later blues, and you get to see the constancy of the blues, the perennial nature of it,\u201d Needle said.<\/p>\n<p>Filling out the band will be two of Jones\u2019 frequent collaborators, bassist Luke Bass and drummer Mike Rinker. One ensemble song will be \u201cShake Sugaree,\u201d which folk singer Elizabeth Cotten famously wrote and recorded with her grandchildren, and another will be Simone\u2019s \u201cTo Be Young, Gifted and Black.\u201d<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/><partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>Needle said he found \u201cBacklash Blues,\u201d with lyrics by famed Harlem Renaissance poet Langston Hughes, to be particularly relevant today, at a time where white nationalist ideas have once again found a foothold in the American mainstream.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll you got to offer is your mean old white backlash,\u201d Simone originally sang in the 1960s. \u201cThe world is big, big and bright and round\/And it\u2019s full of folks like me who are black, yellow, beige and brown\/Mr. Backlash, I\u2019m gonna leave you with the backlash blues.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFacing our own time of backlash, it&#8217;s a very timely song to have in the program,\u201d Needle said. \u201cWe&#8217;re ending the show with &#8216;Young, Gifted and Black,&#8217; Gazette\" caption=\"At the Feb. 21 Black Women Songwriters concert, which will showcase 20th century music composed by Black women, Worcester guitarist Charles Ketter will both play in the band and step up to the microphone.\" orientation=\"horizontal\" class=\"spacer-large\" util-module-path=\"elements\/media\"\/><\/p>\n<p>The more Sidelca thought about it, the more the topic felt particularly personal.<\/p>\n<partner-inline util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" class=\"spacer-large\" placement=\"native-article_link\" sizes=\"[[300, 250], [3, 3]]\" min-height=\"250\" fluid=\"\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>One of her aunts has been diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s, and after the death of her grandmother last year, she was struck by the number of family stories relatives told that she had never heard before.<\/p>\n<partner-banner util-module-path=\"elements\/partner\" fluid=\"\" bottom=\"\" lazy=\"\" class=\"spacer-large\" min-height=\"390\" outstream=\"\"\/>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people have these incredible stories that no one knows about,\u201d Sidelca said. \u201cEven thinking about the stories I don&#8217;t know about my parents and grandparents, a lot of people don&#8217;t have that culture in their home where their parents or grandparents sat them down and told their stories, and they get to the point where they can&#8217;t tell you because they&#8217;ve lost it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stephens, meanwhile, thought about her own childhood memories of 1960s Boston, searching endlessly and often unsuccessfully for representation in books, history and popular culture.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen I was a little girl, there was nothing Black on anywhere. There were no Black dolls, there was nothing about Black history that was ever, ever taught to us,\u201d Stephens said. \u201cAs a child, I started to wonder what was happening in other places.
