President Donald Trump <\/a>weighed in Thursday on the arrest of former Prince Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor, the brother of King Charles III<\/a>, calling the situation \u201cvery sad\u201d and \u201cso bad for the British royal family<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cI think it\u2019s a shame,\u201d Trump told reporters<\/a>.\u00a0\u201cI think it\u2019s very sad. I think it\u2019s so bad for the royal family. It\u2019s very, very sad. To me, it\u2019s a very sad thing.\u201d<\/p>\n

Trump made the remarks aboard Air Force One after landing in Georgia<\/a> for a speech on the economy. The former prince was arrested Thursday<\/a> by Thames Valley Police on suspicion of misconduct in public office.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mountbatten-Windsor\u2019s arrest comes as more information about his ties to the disgraced late financier Jeffrey Epstein<\/a> has been made public with the latest release of Jeffrey Epstein-related files<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Documents released this year show the former prince shared confidential government information with Epstein during his time as U.S. trade envoy for the United Kingdom. Police confirmed Feb. 9 that they were examining the reported illegal communications between the two men.<\/p>\n

The 66-year-old was released later the same day<\/a> under investigation, and no charges have been filed.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Trump called the former prince\u2019s brother, King Charles III, a \u201cfantastic man\u201d ahead of the monarch\u2019s upcoming visit to the United States.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Charles has publicly stressed that due process<\/a> must be followed, while the arrest marks an extraordinary moment for the British monarchy, as a senior royal being taken into custody is virtually unprecedented in modern times.\u00a0<\/p>\n
