Something you may not know about me: I’m almost always in the middle of one book or another, usually a novel.<\/p>\n\n

Currently it’s the Charles Dickens epic “Bleak House” for some reason, and before that it was Gary Shteyngart’s troubling yet compelling “Vera, or Faith.”<\/p>\n

Speaking of books, the University of North Carolina Wilmington’s Department of English is bringing in a North Carolina author for its Buckner Lecture Series.<\/p>\n

David Joy, who lives in Jackson County west of Asheville, will speak at the free Buckner Lecture 6 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 25, at the Lumina Theatre<\/a> in the Fisher Student Center on campus.<\/p>\n\n

The author of five novels, most recently 2023’s “Those We Thought We Knew,” Joy has also written a memoir (“Growing Gills: A Fly Fisherman\u2019s Journey”) and co-edited a collection of writing about fly fishing. His work is centered on Appalachia, and in 2023 his debut novel “Where All Light Tends to Go” was made into a film, “Devil’s Peak,” starring Billy Bob Thornton and Robin Wright.<\/p>\n\n

At 7 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 19, Joy will take part in a free, book-club like-discussion of “Those We Thought We Knew” at Pomegranate\u00a0Books in Wilmington.<\/p>\n
