\n Eric Dane, the handsome and hunky actor who steamed up primetime TV on \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d at the height of the show\u2019s popularity, has died, according to his publicist. He was 53.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cWith heavy hearts, we share that Eric Dane passed on Thursday afternoon following a courageous battle with ALS. He spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world,\u201d the statement read.\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane announced he was living with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis<\/a> (ALS), also known as Lou Gehrig\u2019s Disease, in 2025. Following his diagnosis, he \u201cbecame a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight,\u201d the statement added.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cHe will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always,\u201d the statement added. \u201cEric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he\u2019s received.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane enjoyed a robust TV and film career that began in the early 1990s. He had bit parts in popular series including \u201cThe Wonder Years\u201d and \u201cRoseanne\u201d before a multi-episode arc in the early aughts on \u201cGideon\u2019s Crossing.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Meatier roles followed, including that of Jason Dean on \u201cCharmed\u201d in 2003, before he took on the role of smoldering Dr. Mark Sloan on Shondaland megahit \u201cGrey\u2019s Anatomy\u201d on ABC, beginning in 2006.\n <\/p>\n

\n Earning the moniker \u201cMcSteamy\u201d on screen, it stuck off-screen, too. Dane became a fixture of the medical drama from seasons 3 through 9, when his character was written off, dying from injuries sustained in a plane crash. He reprised the role in 2021 during the long-running show\u2019s 17th season, which featured multiple buzzy<\/a> returns from past characters.\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane talked about his complicated feelings about playing McSteamy during an appearance<\/a> on SiriusXM\u2019s \u201cJess Cagle Show\u201d in 2022, classifying his time on the show as \u201ca magical time in my life.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cIt was a fun show. It was new for us and it was exciting. We on this juggernaut of a television show that was in every country and that everybody watched,\u201d he said. \u201cI don\u2019t know that I necessarily felt comfortable being McSteamy, so much so that I think that may be the third time I\u2019ve actually said that name, but it was fun and I love all those people dearly.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n During his tenure on \u201cGrey\u2019s,\u201d Dane also appeared in several popular films, including \u201cX-Men: The Last Stand,\u201d \u201cMarley & Me\u201d and \u201cBurlesque.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n In 2019, he took on the role of Cal Jacobs, the stern and standoffish father to Jacob Elordi\u2019s neo-high school jock Nate on \u201cEuphoria.\u201d Dane reprised the role in the acclaimed series\u2019 second season, and is listed as set to appear in the show\u2019s long-awaited third and final season<\/a> this spring.\n <\/p>\n

\n In a statement, an HBO spokesperson said the network was \u201cdeeply saddened\u201d by Dane\u2019s passing, calling him \u201cincredibly talented.\u201d \u201cOur thoughts are with his loved ones during this difficult time.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane remained active until quite recently, appearing last fall in an episode<\/a> of \u201cBrilliant Minds,\u201d where he played a firefighter who suffered from ALS.\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane first announced his diagnosis last April and worked hard to advocate for further assistance for those with and research into neurodegenerative diseases.\n <\/p>\n

\n In June, during his first television interview<\/a> since revealing his diagnosis, Dane opened up about some of the symptoms that led to the discovery of his diagnosis, telling ABC\u2019s \u201cGood Morning America\u201d that it all started with \u201csome weakness in my right hand.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n ALS progressively affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord that make the muscles of both the upper and lower body work, according to the ALS Association, a non-profit organization that works to research the disease and offer resources to people living with it.\n <\/p>\n

\n There is currently no known cure.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cAt the end of the day, just, all I want to do is spend time with my family and work a little bit if I can,\u201d he told ABC in June. \u201cI don\u2019t think this is the end of my story. I just don\u2019t feel like, in my heart, I don\u2019t feel like this is the end of me.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane went on to advocate for legislation addressing research on neurodegenerative diseases.\n <\/p>\n

\n In October, he traveled<\/a> to Washington, DC with the nonprofit I AM ALS to advocate for additional research into ALS, as the Accelerating Access to Critical Therapies for ALS Act, which was passed in 2021, had provided for five years of research into the disease, among other provisions, and was close to running out.\n <\/p>\n

\n I AM ALS said it was \u201cheartbroken\u201d by Dane\u2019s death. \u201cEric used his platform not for attention, but for action,\u201d the group said in a statement, calling him \u201ca fierce advocate, a generous spirit, and a true champion in the movement to end ALS.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n While in DC, Dane spoke about his hope for the future.\n <\/p>\n

\n \u201cI have two daughters at home. I want to see them, you know, graduate college, and get married and maybe have grandkids,\u201d Dane said. \u201cI want to be there for all that. So I\u2019m going to fight to the last breath on this one.\u201d\n <\/p>\n

\n Dane shared teen daughters Billie and Georgia with actress Rebecca Gayheart.\n <\/p>\n
