A politician has called on Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor to remove
\nhimself from the line of succession.<\/p>\n
Andrew Bowie, who is shadow Scotland Secretary, said it was time
\nfor the former prince to give up any claim to the throne.<\/p>\n
Speaking to GB News, the Conservative politician said \u201dI think
\nit would be the decent thing.\u201d<\/p>\n
The call came the day after Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was
\nreleased from custody under police investigation. He had been
\narrested earlier the same day by officers investigating misconduct
\nin public office.<\/p>\n
Mr Bowie said \u201dOf course, if he\u2019s found guilty of this, I think
\nParliament would be well within its rights to act to remove him
\nfrom the line of succession\u2026..let\u2019s remember, he\u2019s not been found
\nguilty of anything just yet\u00a0 \u2013 he has yet to be charged with
\nanything.\u201d<\/p>\n
Removing anyone from the line of succession isn\u2019t a royal
\ndecision although someone can offer to give up their place, if they
\nwish. Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor does have the option to say he
\nwould no longer be in line to the throne.<\/p>\n
Formal changes to the succession have to be made by parliament.
\nAnd they would have to be made in all the realms in which Charles
\nIII is King meaning the process is complicated and time consuming
\nand not necessarily something that a range of countries would want
\nto dedicate legislative time to.<\/p>\n
However, the issue of Andrew Mountbatten- Windsor\u2019s place in the
\nsuccession has been under renewed discussion in recent days and
\nthat has intensified following his arrest.<\/p>\n
The government has previously said there are no plans to begin
\nthe process of removing anyone from the line of succession.<\/p>\n
Although Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor has now been released under
\ninvestigation, police continue to search his former home at Royal
\nLodge on the Windsor estate.<\/p>\n
He was detained around 8am on February 19, his 66th birthday and
\nheld at a police station for 11 hours before being seen being
\ndriven away from Aylsham detention centre just before 7pm.<\/p>\n
He has always denied any wrongdoing.<\/p>\n
Thames Valley Police, who arrested and questioned the former,
\nprince, said no further details would be given at this time.<\/p>\n
Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was born second in line to the throne
\nand is now eighth.<\/p>\n
